OC's Newest Halo Fan!
On Tuesday afternoon, after a nice late lunch, I took my wife to the hospital. She was having contractions, but not yet in labor. Roughly seven hours later, Evelyn was born.
What makes this an amusing story is the extent of assitude my wife kicks. After the contractions slowed down, things were getting pretty boring. So, like any other night, we turned on the Halo game. That's right, Fox Sports West in the Labor and Delivery Room at St. Joe's in Orange!
It was a mostly unspectacular evening, for both the Halos, and my wife, until the ninth inning, for the Halos and my wife. By this time, contractions were starting to speed up, and our All-Star was on the mound. Should have been an until recently superb outing by our closer, but the previous games struggles with the hot-hitting Indians returned.
The inning started to get ugly right around the time the doctor and nurses came in for the delivery. As the coach/partner/husband/father, official film photographer, and a nervous Angel fan, my attention was split three ways! Here was my pregnant wife giving birth to our child, an All-Star blowing it on the mound, and a film camera in each of my hands trying to capture it all!
At the first push, I saw baby head. In between contractions, eyes averted to the screen above. One out now, but it still wasn't looking pretty. There was no progress after the second push, and between contractions, the doctor and nurses turned to watch the game. My wife looked up, noticing a lot of yellow on the bases, then timidly remarking, "I think there's another one (contraction) coming."
The doctor and nurses slowly returned their attention for another contraction. By the sixth contraction, Bulger had finished the job, to a silent fist pump by the wife, and nods of approval by the labor and delivery staff. With the seventh push, baby was out, and the fireworks across the street in Anaheim were celebrating "Just another Halo Victory" simultaneously as we were celebrating the birth of OC's new halo fan!

That's fantastic
My father, myself, my brother, and my sister were all delivered at St. Joe’s. An auspicious start for an Angel fan. Light it up!
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
VERY NICE!
Congrats!

A cup or so a day ain’t bad for the baby anymore, plus it gets them Mammary glands producing real good to get Evelyn big and strong so she can take on the world.

Dude, this is a awesome set of photos...
it makes child birth actually look kinda mellow. Which is weird. I love the shot of the doctor waiting for the baby and the nurse totally just watching the baseball game like, “meh, another delievery…i gotta see if Bulger gets out of the inning!”

Second birth for me was 10 to the ninety-ninth easier,
but it was also much faster. The doctor needed a catcher’s mitt for that one.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
Lucky you.
Our second baby was the pregnancy from hell. Wound up having to deliver 7 weeks preemie via C-section.

That's too bad.
Our first pregnancy was the one from hell, and I don’t want to swap war stories but let’s just say we waited 8 years to have the second one because the first pregnancy was so fraught with awfulness. He was full term and healthy but I wasn’t.
Second time out I was healthy as a horse.
Third one was problematic and we were warned in month three that we might have to make one of those gut-wrenching decisions in month four that you never want to have to make.
We stopped after that.

Giving birth is the vote of the optimist. A hearty congratulations that you have given this child such a lovely story of family tradition on which to begin her life.

When I'm not at the stadium, I'd rather be watching my Halos back in Costa Rica!
Congratulations
Great post, awesome pics, beautiful family.
I hope I am able to keep composure and get the most out of my cameras should I ever be in a similar situation. Your daughter, as well as the rest of your family, is fortunate to have these photos.
Apologies in advance.
Also, you are a pretty damned good photographer
(Typing this with my one-year-old daughter on my lap.)
Congrats again.
Congrats!!
Reminds me of 3 years ago this month we sat in the delivery room watching while Little Weaver made his Angels debut. And in 3 weeks I’m scheduled to have my 2nd son, who’s being born on an off day!

I didn't get into a room in time for a baseball game in 1979 (baby #2)
but we watched SNL because she wasn’t sleepy. John Belushi played the ghost of deceased Mayor Daly going into an Irish bar in Chicago on St Patrick’s Day. My husband was appalled that I was corrupting her at less than 24 hours old.

On e of the the best moments of life...
…is when new life enters the world. My daughter will be 22 in a couple of weeks, but I remember the events of the day, the time she was born, the mess she looked upon “arrival”, the looks on my wife’s face going through a spectrum of emotions, the smell of the delivery room, the quizzical look on my 3 year old son’s face through the whole process…thanks for bringing back some very special memories.
You are a lucky guy with an great family. Cheers!
BTW, how’s the arm?
the most amazing thing...
…. is just being here for it all. considering uncle sam wouldn’t let me stay back last time, it really meant a lot to me. it’s also pretty fantastic how these photos and descriptive words can bring back so many similar, pleasant memories for everyone else! as someone studying to be a writer and photographer, it feels mighty nice to hear/read so many positive comments.
the accident was twenty-five months ago. i don’t have a lot of upper body strength, but the extent of my disability is that I can no longer do even a few pushups (though I can almost bench my body weight), and while I have always had terrific form when throwing, I simply no longer have any velocity or loft in long toss. Not that I was throwing 90 before, but at 5’10" and 150, I was proud of my 83! Nowadays, I’ve worked up to throwing the tennis ball for the dog to 120 feet. Aside from that, I have no one to throw with to test it…

It's difficult to put it all in precise words.
For example, I know it changed me when when my son was born. I felt far more responsible and protective (probably not as much as mama bear).
But when my daughter was born, those same protective instincts became much sharper. I started to look at the things in her world more intensely (Do the windows have adequate locks? What is all this crap in baby food? Life insurance…. um…how much do we have? Maybe that mobile above the crib isn’t so safe? Etc.). For the first time in my life, I actually started to worry!
Anyway, it is a one of the best experiences possible in life. Glad you were able to bear witness this time.
Regarding your arm, I hope it continues to improve. Best of luck to you and your family!
Sweet.
I was stuck watching Obama’s inauguration during the birth of my daughter.

I've given up all hope
I have 2 girls, 8 & 9. They could not be more opposite of each other. The oldest is a laid back surfer girl, loves sports, has no fear of anything. The youngest is a princess with a divas attitude, loves to shop, & cannot get her hands dirty.
Yup… I’m screwed

CONGRATULATIONS! You had an amazing day and I agree with Matt…you are an amazing photographer!

You have wonderful photography skills….very interesting B&W pics. Your wife looks so serene. I especially liked the one where she is showing your new daughter to your son.

Beautiful story! Hope the whole fam was able to recuperate to the Halos’ weekend long firework show…
Backtracked through the comments and found your blog link

Wow!
These photos are award winning. Seriously. I see a lot of good photography (my wife works for Brooks Institute), and this stuff really stacks up. So much depth of emotion in each one.
Congrats to you all for fulfilling God’s first commandment: be fruitful and multiply. I pray blessings for your family.
We are expecting ourselves. My wife is at 14 weeks. It is quite significant because over the last 2 years, we have had 4, yes FOUR, miscarriages that all happened around 7 weeks. So, we think this little one is the trooper that will fight till the finish.
This season is my best chance to get called out of the stands to pitch.
Damn...
…four? Mrs. Manatee has got to be one tough gal. I hope this little trooper makes it to see the light of day…good luck to all of you.
Yeah, she's awesome.
We have faith that this is the one. Thanks for your well-wishing.

Thanks Mr. and Mrs. Manatee
Photography (film) is my non-baseball passion, and I am trying to use it to make some money on the side—weddings, portraits, etc, while continuing my degree to Journalism at UCI.
Best of luck and prayers for you and your wife in the coming months!
www.13stoploss.com
Journalism?
a degree in that is akin to a degree in blacksmithing in Detroit a century ago. Know what i mean?
I shortened it...
“Literary Journalism” is the major, and is more similar to “creative non-fiction.” Less traditional, concerning news reporting. Supposed to be one of the better writing programs in the state.

Thanks fenom.
I told her about your photo’s. She’s gotta see them. It might make delivery seem less scary. Maybe even fun? Anyway, thanks for the prayers. We know prayer is powerful.
My sister-in-law is getting married in March in Costa Mesa. I’ll ask if she has a photographer lined up yet. If not, I’ll put in a good word for you.

thanks!
Costa Mesa is right up the street! Please pass along: . The wedding set there is not really indicative of what I can do. I took those photos from the seats, then cropped and enlarged like crazy (which I hate). If she has someone picked out, or is looking for something else, no worries. My film style isn’t for everyone.

Rally,
I know what your wife is going through. I’ve had 8 or 9 myself (you quit keeping count at a certain point)
Goodness!
Sorry to hear that. I have never felt so helpless as I did being with my wife as she went through that, and not being able to do anything about it. We’ve gotten so used to pregnancy just being a fruitless and worrisome condition. It’s hard to believe this time might be different, there might be real results. Have you had any children yet, or all miscarriages? We’ll pray for you if you pray for us. Well, we’ll pray for you even if you don’t pray for us :)

I've got 3 boys...17, 8 & 4
the last was in-vitro (covered by insurance :-) which is why we had to try it)
It is a helpless state; especially when you don’t know the cause. Other than “shit happens”, there’s no other reason.
relaxing is her best goal.
Phenomenal! Congratulations to you, and to your wife certainly!
Incredible post, brilliantly composed and presented, and with an awesome outcome. I truly wish you and your family the very best of luck throughout all your days.
(My wife, on the other hand, she shows no sympathy, nor any mercy. She had to spit out a pair of 10 pound, 21 inch footballs. Somehow that turned out to be all MY fault!)
We don't have a Bullpen. We have a Cowpen. Before we get to call it a Bullpen these guys gotta grow a pair.
At the same time?!?
Please, in the name of all which does not suck, tell me you are not talking about twins!
Apologies in advance.
No, no, no. Three years apart. Not that this made any significant difference.
I have always said that I can totally understand why a woman would want to have a child. But I could never understand how, after going through that once, any woman would ever want to have another.
We don't have a Bullpen. We have a Cowpen. Before we get to call it a Bullpen these guys gotta grow a pair.
Wasn't the 2nd child easier?
For us, the 2nd was like…ordering take-out;
- OB – “The wife’s ripe and ready…when do you want to break water?”
- Us – “How about Friday…that way we can have the weekend to relax.”
- OB – “Friday it is!”
We checked in Friday at 12:00 Noon. Our daughter was delivered about 4:00 PM. Fewer cramps. Fewer contractions. No back labor. Piece o’cake (especially for me)! What a contrast to when our son was born. That was a 16 hour ordeal. Almost went c-section.
nope. not the least bit easier.
The Birthing Center at South bay Hospital back then was, however, unbelievable. Especially compared to St Joe’s where our first was born.
At SBH, the delivery rooom looked like a nice guest bedroom, or hotel suite. Until they declare time to deliver. Then, the fine beech cabinetry behind the bed opened up and all the shiny chrome medical gear came flying out like a cross between the Terminator and a Transformer!! The room was a full-on medical center! Once the child was delivered, and all was complete, the room folded back up to the hotel suite and all was quiet again. Like nothing ever happened, except that my wife was sore and exhausted and toally pissed off, and there was a new baby in her arms.
To hell with the kid. I wanted to see that room transform again!!!
But no more about us. This is fenom’s moment…
We don't have a Bullpen. We have a Cowpen. Before we get to call it a Bullpen these guys gotta grow a pair.
I know what you're talking about...
…every good quality exhibited by the progeny is self-proscribed to the wife’s genetic contribution…and are then bestowed with the title of “my son” or “my daughter”.
Conversely, any negative characteristics are naturally ascribed to "your side of the family, and they mysteriously transform into “your son” or “your daughter”.
I asked for the rules to describe this transformation, but gave up many, many years ago.
