we are the Atlanta Braves of the 90's
We are happy winning division titles and that is it. Maybe the Angels will continue winning division titles in a four team American West and get bounced in the first round of the Playoffs. We have so many fans here who are myopic. Thinking we are fine and we will win with what we got. What we have is an awful bullpen and erratic starters. Having Halladay with Lackey would of gave us a strong chance to beat Boston or Ny, that is if we make the play offs. Texas can still win this division. The Angels have a brutal road trip in September- NY, Boston and Texas.
1. Our team is not as strong as last years team.
Pitching last year was a lot stronger especially the bullpen.
2. As one fan stated here on this site, would you feel safe with a one run lead in Boston in the 8th inning? NO
3. Pitching usually wins a 5 game play off series.
Halladay, Lackey, Weaver- that would be three darn good pitchers in a 5 game series.
Finally, we have too many infielders, why not move one for pitching?
Ayber, Izturis, Kendrick, Wood, Figgins,

This team is awesome!
They have been through a lot this year and have pulled through because they have heart and that’s more important than anything a trade can bring.
some are just never satisfied...

Brutal Road Trip?
The brutal road trip you speak of is one game against the Yankees, 3 against Boston and 3 against Texas. Are you kidding?
Must work for ESPN
just have to make all kinds of drama by making it look like everyone is better than us
yeah, brutal, we own the Yankees, the Rangers are going to be drained by the Texas heat and we can play against Boston
Angels in 09!
I was watching the Braves/Dodgers game tonight
and dear Joe Morgan was saying that the Rangers were having a terrific year, just a sensational year, and it was only that the Angels were playing so well right now that the Rangers are in first place.
I laughed out loud.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
Yeah I heard that too
that was the point I had to change the channel. I can only stand Morgan & Phillips for so long.

the pitching is worse but the hitting is better
furthermore, by overrating weaver shows that you are talking out of your ass
bulger and jepsen are coming around very nicely and oliver and matty p are great for the bp

last year when we fell behind did you ever have any hope of coming back?
how about this year?

2005 ALDS
Colon (21-8), Escobar (3-2), Byrd (12-11), Lackey (14-5), Santana (emergency reliver for an ineffective and injured Colon)
These weren’t great pitchers, yet the Halos got through the first round and made a dang good showing in the first two games of the second round. I still maintain that had they won the Eddings-Pierzynski signature Game 2, it would have been a very different 2005 ALCS.
I love this team.
How many times does this have to be explained?

You know what?
Whichever team progresses through the playoffs is not down to design or execution, the playoffs are for the most part dumb luck. It’s incongruous that a 162 game season comes down to a couple of hops in a best of 5 crapshoot.
All you can do is get the team to the post-season, and the more times you achieve that, the more likely that one of those appearances will mutate into a ring.

600 does not mean anything in a 5 game play off series especially playing Boston. My point to my post was the Braves Won their division I believe 13 years in a row, no world series Ring.

playoffs
What is everyone going to say when we are bounced again in the first round? Are you all happy just to make the playoffs? My goodness. Im not, I am sick of winning the division and not getting to the world series. Yes, last time was 2002. 100 wins does not mean anything, playing 600 ball does not mean anything.
Follow the model of the Lakers, do they hang up banners for each time they win a division? Hell NO. they only hang up banners win they win it all. What is the spin that half of you will have if we get bounced again in the first round??

The overall pitching is a problem that would not have been corrected by adding Halladay. The Angels currently rank 11th in the AL in runs allowed. They also rank 11th in FIP. They are giving up way too many runs.

If you think Halladay is the difference between the Angels beating or losing to Boston...
…well, then you didn’t watch the ALDS last year. Or in 2007.
The way to win in the playoffs is scoring a shit-ton of runs. We’ve never been able to do it. If we get Matt Palmer out there and he gives up 3 in 6, or 4 in 7, or even 5 in 7, that doesn’t mean we should lose. Those numbers would make him a below league-average pitcher.
Last year we scored 1, 5, 5, and 2 runs. In 2007, we scored 0, 3, and 1. Hell, in 2004: 3,3, and 6.
This team doesn’t win lots of games when it can’t score at least 5 runs. So 7 of those 10 games should be automatic losses regardless.
2005? 2, 5, 11, 2, 5. The ALCS, which we lost, 3, 1, 2, 2, 3.
2002? 5, 8, 9, 9. In the ALCS, 1, 6, 2, 7, 13. The World Series? 3, 11, 10, 4, 6, 4.
The problem has always been the offense. We will not win in the playoffs until we improve our offense. Somehow, this year, our offense has improved. That might be all we need.
In summary, go away.

Said last night when she saw the Gameday scoreboard, “The Angels aren’t just beating teams right now, they’re killing them. It seems like they win 11-5 every night.”
If my wife knows that much, then it’s pretty obvious how good our offense has been. Carl is right, as he usually is. The offense is not the problem this year.

the offense and the D failed in the playoffs last season. Lackey threw up 2 gems in the playoffs and unluckily got outdueled by Lester both times. Saunders in his one game had to watch a routine fly out become a 3-run triple. Weaver got the only W in the series. Really the only starter from last post season who really didnt pitch well was Santana. If the halos make the playoffs im pretty sure we wont be seeing santana in the ALDS rotation. This season’s offense is a different animal i’d feel good going into the post season with an offense like this one

I’ll look forward to your posts gushing over the emerging O’Sullivan and Reckling in the rotation over the next two years. You know—guys who “should have” been traded away for Halladay, who would have been gone by 2011 anyway.
You have no sense of what it takes to build a club for the long run. You know only today, and that failure on your part will continue to bite you on the ass every time you issue one of the incredibly stupid posts.
I won’t tell you to go away. It isn’t my board, and everyone is entitled to one or two brain-dead posts (even though you’re way over quota). What you should do, though, is step away from this forum and use the time to educate yourself over the contract status of the current players, the future free agents, and the talent percolating in the minors. It isn’t about just Boston in 2009 but in 2010, 2011, and into the future. There is a team to run, and you just don’t get it at all.

Halladay
Why not look at the facts for a moment? There is a strong likelihood the Angels could find themselves facing the Tigers in the playoffs. How did Halladay do against them this year?
Ooops. Not too pretty—5 ER given out over 7 IP. Fortunately, he had his offense bail him out.
Then certainly that “Yankee killer” has been bulletproof against NY, right?
Not exactly. Again, 5 ER over 7 IP. This time, he took a ND and the team lost in regulation.
And, of course, there is the issue of beating Texas to get to the playoffs in the first place. Surely he’s been nails against the Rangers, right?
Not so much. Not only did he give up 5 ER in 8 IP, but he was outdueled by…wait for it…Brandon McCarthy.
Am I cherry-picking games this season? You bet. It goes to point out, though, that no player is a lock to do anything. Hallday is a great pitcher, but he isn’t Jesus with a two-seamer. He can get lit up on any given day, and has zero experience in the post-season.
Here is one Cy-winning pitcher who does. Not very pretty, is it? He was absolutely batted around by the Red Sox and Phillies like a cat with a toy.
There are no guarantees. For the price alleged to have been demanded by the Jays, it made no sense.

Wrong, we’re stronger. Battle tested. Been through the Adenhart refiner’s fire.
Halladay, Lackey, Weaver- that would be three darn good pitchers in a 5 game series. Finally, we have too many infielders, why not move one for pitching?
Posting this the day after the trade deadline is pointless. Too late to make a move. None of us are Tony Reagins, how should we know? Not like Reagins didn’t try. The asking prices were too high. The bullpen is going to be fine.
This year’s offense is much better than last year’s. None of us are satisfied with losing to the Red Sox* every year. We hate them as much as we hate losing.

lastly, again, Saunders and Santana will be fine. they have a pretty decent track record, and their struggles are no different than the slump Napoli was in last month. Just takes work and repetition to bust out of it, which is difficult when you only play once every five days.

Saunders, MAYBE
But Santana has been consistently bad this season. His dominant outings have been the exception, not the norm. I won’t trust him on the mound until he goes a straight MONTH without giving up more than two to three runs in a game.

oliver—hes been lights out since the break last year and it seems like he never gives up a run when it matters
arredondo—hes coming back and hes gonna be great (just a gut feeling there but just look at what he did last year) p.s. he remind anyone else of frankie from 02?
bulger—got the save in the indians game, his era in july-1.88 and 2 of the 3 runs he gave up were to the yankees after the game was out of hand-july era—1.35 and he gave up the 3rd run of the game in the top of the 9th of a 6-3 win and his only other run came against the yankees but he got a hold in that game
jepsen
matty p—hes going to fit in well to the long reliever role if he just gets consistent time there, and 3 scoreless of 1 hit ball against cleveland earned him the win and showed his potential
speier-no longer a key guy and we remember his streak but hes gone 5 scoreless outings since then and wont be pitching in too many key spots (he prob wont be on the playoff roster like last year)
loux—with some consistent time in low pressure situations he has the chance to turn into a good mop up guy/damage limiter
and saunders and santana should improve, they are pitching below their talent but if they dont our offense can pick up the slack as they have been doing
so is speier shaky?________yes

Stated on Baseball tonight by Chris Singleton " we have lost 12/13 against Boston in the Playoffs and the Angels do not have a dominating ace" He also questioned our starters after Lackey in a playoff series and questioned our bull pen.
Now I still like Weaver as he is 11-3. But he would be a great #3 in a playoff series. I believe Halladay could of put us in the World Series.
Chris Singleton also said “we are not facing pitching now like we will be in the play offs and this is why we are playing 600 ball.”
Finally watching Around the Horn on ESPN yesterday only Woody Paige was buying the Angels for post season play. The other three panelist were not.

This explains EVERYTHING!!
You’re getting your marching orders from your overlords at ESPN. Baseball Tonight is about as uninformed on baseball west of the Mississippi as one will find in national media. Around the Horn is where the clueless gather to be among their kind; it’s The McLaughlin Group for guys who wear sleeveless t-shirts and don’t see what’s so wrong with a mullet.
What a schmuck.

I don’t know Chris Singleton or Around the Horn.
I tend to agree with your complaint, though, in that adding Halladay to the pitching staff for the playoffs would be great. But, it didn’t get done.
So, you cannot move time and go back to July 31. With that in mind: W6G!
I love this team.

And we're not even the Braves of the '90s
If we’re defining “Braves of the ’90s” as “team that made the playoffs 8 times, but won only one World Series,” that would be the New York Yankees, not the Angels. And please note who bounced the Yanks in 2002 and 2005.

the bottom line
Our bullpen was nails last year, maybe the best in baseball.
Our starters last year had a really good year.
We won 100 damm games.
Our offense was solid add TEx and basically shut down vs Boston.
With all the bitching towards me on this site, I still have not heard one of you telling me how you feel when we will be in the 7th, 8th inning in a 5 game series?
ALso, I still feel Texas can win this division, remember we are 2-9 I believe against them this year.
By the way, if we are in the playoffs, who in the heck is our 2b? is it izzy or howie?

Okay tell the truth
You got dumped by a guy who looks like Texeira and you take your bitterness out on us. Yeah?
the bottom line
is no different than your top line.
go bite your 7th inning nails elsewhere. if you’re paying attention, it seems Sosh has no defined bullpen roles. oh well. like today, we’ll just focus on outscoring the opponent, regardless who is at 2B or LF or DH.
teix? boo hoo. look which 1Bman had 2 3-run bombs today. we miss nothing.

Getting Halladay won't guarantee anything...
It only means we will have trouble re-signing Figgins and Lackey next year.
As an Angels baseball fan for last +15 years, I can tell you that long term success is so much more valuable to me as a fan than winning 1 world series (now that we have one won already). Gutting our team for a playoff run for 1 or 2 years just don’t make sense in baseball where so much is unpredictable.
Remember those days in the 90s when stadium was never full and we sucked like crazy. It was unbearable to watch the season. I definitely do not want to go back to those days. I’d rather make the playoffs every year even if it means we will never beat Boston (although I don’t think that will happen next time) rather than watch Angels struggle through a 162 game season ever again.
I would think that most fans agree.
the REAL bottom line
California Angels,
I can understand your frustration. I, too, hate losing to Boston and I just don’t understandy why we lose to them and them only.
First, let’s make it clear that we’ve only faced them 2 or 3 times this decade under Mike Sciosa. And yes, we lost to them. These things happen. Ask the Yankees, they lost 2 or 3 times to us this decade. It’s not like we lost to them year after year after year after year…
Second, as much as I wanted Hallady on our team, Toronto was just too greedy and that is why he didn’t get traded. There’s no way we give up Aybar, 1 or 2 Starting PItchers, Brandon Wood, and 1 or 2 top prospects. That is just stupid and that is why no GMs made trade for Halladay.
Third, baseball is all about patience. Right now things are good, we are well built for today and future. We are what baseball is all about. I don’t think we need to hit the panic button yet.
Fourth, let’s not forget about our starting pitchers. They have been very inconsistent all year long but we know what they can do when they are on top of their game. We still have 2 months till season is over. Hopefully, Saunders or Santana will get back on track just in time for playoffs. I believe Lackey and Weaver will be solid in the playoffs.
Fifth, our batting has been the best I have ever seen from the Angels. That’s gotta mean something in the playoffs.
Sixth, we have many good infielders and it’s a good problem that we have. All of our infielders, except for Figgins, are dirt cheap for their production. If they continue to play the way they play, they will have even more trade value next year. As for Wood, we have a unique problem. He hasn’t performed well in the majors. His trade value was way too low this year. But his potential is too good to ignore. I think he’s worth holding onto until we make sure Figgins is re-signed. If we can’t re-sign Figgins, Wood better step it up at 3rd base.
"Our offense was solid add TEx and basically shut down vs Boston. "
We won 100 last year and we had have Tex for the second half of the season, and we did not beat the Bosox, it must not have been just one player that was missing.
I do not understand what you are saying because your communication skills are so poor.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
You want to know how I feel???
I feel like bitch slapping you… okay, there are my feelings, out in the open.
Your a kook. Shut up and enjoy the games.
With the way Kevin Jepsen and Jason Bulger pitched this weekend
I really do like our chances.
RIP Nick Adenhart 4/9/09
I agree with you Nominal..
It does not matter how great you team is in any category, success in playoffs is never guaranteed..
In a 5 game series any one can win…I almost hope we play close in the division till late Septemeber, instead of walking away with the D-title in early September…
We may have more momentum in the playoffs if that is the case..
Maybe this year we don’t face Boston in the first round..
This team is great,but win 90 games,95 or 100 games,you can’t be sure of anything…
I said...
last year when we got knocked out by the Red Sox, and I still think this rings true today regardless of the outcome of this season… you can’t measure success solely on whether or not you win the World Series every year, or you will be the most depressed sports fan on planet earth. We are having a great year despite obvious difficulties we have overcome, and I look forward to hopefully winning the West, and hopefully doing well in the playoffs, but the fact is, it’s hard to win the World Series no matter how good your team is. Be lucky that you like a team that over the past decade has been in contention and in the playoffs almost every year. My dad is a Washington Nationals fan, and like many others, he doesn’t bother to keep up with the season past April, because it is freaking depressing. So you can continue to piss and moan that the Angels won’t win the World Series every year, but keep in mind that probably the greatest sports franchise of all time the New York Yankees are coming up on a decade without a championship, only 5 teams have won the World Series since we have, and last but not least, cheer up, at least you don’t like the Nationals.

People always bring up the Braves comment
as though it’s a bad thing. Are we happy with winning the division? Yes. Would we like to win the World Series every year? Of course. Who wouldn’t. But the Management of this organization has an obligation for both the team as it’s presently constructed and for what may be in the future. Could you imagine what this team would be like had they traded guys like Morales, Napoli, or Weaver away for Miguel Tejada? The fact that the Angels put out a consistent and proven winner year after year should celebrated, not denigrated. Every season the trading deadline over-inflates the value of certain players because teams become desperate, but I really give the Angels a lot of credit for being objective and keeping a long-term view of this club at the forefront.

I don't know about you guys
but I hate leading all of fucking baseball in runs scored per game.
Fuck this stupid team. It should suck less. They should win at LEAST 80% of the time if they want to be good.

I'd rather be good
than lucky. sigh. Guess I’ll just have to be lucky.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Braves were an outstanding organization in the 90s
The Braves took the Twins to Game 7 in extra innings in 1991 before losing the World Series.
They acquired Jeff Reardon late in the 1992 season for the World Series vs. Toronto and he blew two saves.
The best any organization can do is put them in a position to win.
Ironically, those who are criticizing the Braves need to remember that they did what the Angels have been criticized for not doing and that is be more active in the free agent market and the trade deadline. Yet it resulted in as many World Series championships during their run as the Angels have had, 1.
Neither team was satisfied with merely division titles. The Braves of the 90s competed in an era when you could sign Greg Maddux without a no-trade clause, and get him to re-sign because he wanted to remain part of that organization, and Boras was the agent. The Angels are competing in another marketplace, and they’re doing much better than the Braves. You can’t win a World Series unless you make the playoffs.
