MVP AL

Hey guys.. Congrats to Vladimir on his 400th homer last night..Funny how they said it was 'uncharacteristic" of him to hit an opposite field home run .. Yet,that was one of his calling cards being able to hit HR anywhere..

Who do you all think is the MVP of the AL this year ?? Many candidates for sure, but no run away winner...

Obviously the next 2 months playa  big part in who will get it , and how the playoff picture turns out..

So,right now who do you vote for if you had one ??

Morneau and Mauer, Abreu and Morales,Tex,Jeter,Miguel Cabrera ?? Or is there another person you think is deserving.. Too bad Torri is hurt,he was the MVP of the team at that point, but it is nice to see Juan and Kendry pick up the slack...

This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

I'm really feeling Abreu at this point

But he will need to be on plasma (above on fire) in order to turn the heads of those out east. Tex has a good shot, no doubt. Still glad we have Kendry at a fraction of the cost.

In Remembrance of Nick Adenhart, Courtney Stewart, Henry Pearson. Heal soon Jon Wilhite.

I want Andrew Thomas Gallo to be a pinata, and the Angels supply the bats...

Oh, and W6G.

Well it's beyond Ridiculous and Ludicrous, if that's what you mean.

RIP Nick Adenhart.

At the risk of sounding ridiculous and jinxing the deal...

The way Kendry is accelerating through the year, you just never know…

Hard to argue with Mauer

K-Mo is on his way to serious consideration though.

I think I just repeated the sentiments of the two posts above me. Oh well.

What's so hard about arguing with Mauer?

His team isn’t even above 500. The MVP usually goes to a player who helps the team contend, unless they have a historical kind of season which Mauer isn’t having. Great yes, historical, no.

USUALLY

A Rod in ‘03 on a team not even anywhere near contention comes to mind. Besides, the season is not over, and Minnesota’s barely under .500, and very much still in it. And how the hell is his ‘09 performance not historical? He currently has a higher batting average than any other catcher in a single season in the history of the Major Leagues. That’s American AND National. Again, the season is not over, but there is definitely cause to believe that it could be historical.

Apologies in advance.

Not to mention...

The Gold Glove defense.

Apologies in advance.

Yeah...

Great season. Not historic in my mind. People don’t usually remember stuff like the highest average for a catcher in MLB history. They think about things like Barry Bonds hitting 73 homeruns, Big Mac hitting 70, Babe Ruth hitting 60, Roger Maris hitting 61. They think of Ted Williams hitting .400 and Joe Dimaggio having a 56 game hitting streak.

Yeah, A-Roid had a great 2003 season and won the MVP. He also had a great 2002 season and Miguel Tejada won it even though A-Roid had BETTER numbers. A team being in contention, again USUALLY, weighs in heavily in the decision for MVP. Heck, Big Mac hit 70 homeruns in 98, a record that had stood for decades, and he didn’t win the MVP. Having a great AVG doesn’t win you MVPs, it wins you batting titles. And I understand he had hit more homeruns this year (like 20) and plays great defense. But if it’s not translating into wins…probably not getting the MVP.

The Twins are under .500. And even if they are just a few games under, I’m sorry, at this point in the season your pretty much out of it. If you can’t play .500 ball by August, your probably not going to the postseason or anywhere near it (I know there are always exceptions).

I’d say he would be the best choice if the Twins were in contention. Problem is, THERE NOT!

So...

hopefully we have all learned that you CAN argue with Mauer being MVP. Not saying he wouldn’t be a good candidate, but the argument CAN be made!

by Angel Hawker on Aug 12, 2009 7:09 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe the argument can be made...

But you didn’t make it.

Again, the Twins are five games out. I don’t care if they’re under .500 or not. The question is are they in contention, and in that division, they are. The Padres won their shitty division a few years back without playing .500 ball, and they didn’t have the sickest catcher in baseball. In your examples, neither McGwire nor Ted Williams even received the award for their “historic” seasons. Besides, historic is not a factor in determining the recipient of a yearly award.

And one more thing: it’s THEY’RE, not THERE.

Apologies in advance.

Baseball MVP Criteria

Facts:
A-Rod AL MVP 2003 (Texas finished 20 games below .500 and was last in AL West, did not make playoffs)
Barry Bonds NL MVP 2004 (SF finished 2nd behind Dodgers, did not make playoffs)
Jimmy Rollins NL MVP 2006 (PHI finished 12 games behind Mets and 3 games out of wild card, did not make playoffs)

I can go back further but you see my point. It’s extremely hard for ONE guy to make a serious impact on a baseball team. Of all the major sports, it requires the least amount of team work and chemistry. In basketball, your star player is 1/5 of the starting lineup. In football, hockey, and soccer, teamwork and timing is absolutely critical. Let’s do the math, there’s 9 batters and 5 starting pitchers. One pitcher can only win you 33 games – not enough to make playoffs if your team is not good. Similarly, one batter should only win you every 1 out of 9 games (statistically speaking) if your other batters are no good.

Baseball is as close as you can get to an individual sport while being a team sport. That’s why statistics are so important in baseball because it really comes down to one pitcher throwing the ball and one batter swinging the bat.

Here’s the arguement fot Mauer (I am an Angels fan by the way), he’s doing everything in his powers to help the team because he’s performing better at an individual level better than anybody else in the AL. If A-Rod can win MVP while his team finishes dead last in AL West, Mauer should definitely be able to win it this year. Let’s not forget, his team is still in “contention” despite being few games below .500.

Good points....

but you can also look up a lot of guys who had the best numbers in the league and yet didn’t win the MVP. Many times you have someone without the best numbers win it because someone had a solid year and helped push their team to the playoffs.

I don’t care what you guys say, if a team isn’t .500 now, they are not likely to make the playoffs. 5 games out or not. If a team isn’t .500, they are not serious contenders.

And the argument can be made for Mauer, I’m just saying the argument can be made against him as well. But I suppose you guys think it will be a unanimous vote for Mauer because who can argue with you guys?

It is tough to argue Mauer for sure,as he plays a demanding position..He gives Morneau a lot of RBI chances as well..
Guess I forgot to mention a player from the Rays like Crawford or Longoria, but I doubt either will get it…
Abreu would be nice to see him get it..But I think they will keep the MVP on the East Coast- Tex if they get a reason to give it to him…

by raven191 on Aug 11, 2009 1:34 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

if K-Mo Continues...

Then he’s got a real shot, but seeing as how he’s a virtual unknown, I don’t think you can go there. I also think the Angels’ hitters are victims of their own group success, with no one player standing out since Torii went down (before then I think he had to be the front-runner).

But riht now, I’d say Miguel Cabrera for helping keep the Tigers afloat offensively.

Mauer

Two screw-jobs are enough. The dude is a Gold Glove catcher who wins batting titles, and this year he decides to hit home runs, too? He’s been the best player in the American League for a while now.

Yep - not really close, IMO.

Dude is unreal – the next best thing after Pujols.

Jeter winning would be a sham of epic, historic proportions

and no, that’s not hyperbole talking.

Please don’t help perpetuate the bullshit that is the Jeter-MVP talk that I’ve been hearing whispered about of late. It’s total crap to even THINK about.
