Justin Speier released to make room for Trevor Bell

The Angels released Justin Speier before today's game to make room on the roster for Trevor Bell.  The Angels owe Speier the remainder of his salary for this season and $5.25 million for next season.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/angels_blog/2009/08/angels-release-reliever-justin-speier.html

Speier was a disappointment last season and this season, but he was a good clubhouse guy.  I am sad that it did not work out for him as an Angel.  Time to move forward though.

It was a matter of time.

Not a good pitcher anymore, but I loved the fact that he was a Marine.

In Remembrance of Nick Adenhart, Courtney Stewart, Henry Pearson. Heal soon Jon Wilhite.

I want Andrew Thomas Gallo to be a pinata, and the Angels supply the bats...

Yes

The other post was essentially simultaneous. When I began typing my post, no one had posted this yet.

News items such as this are more suited to a fanshot.

At least I got the link to the source properly posted in mine.

For what it's worth

Fanshots are listed farily well down on the main page, whereas Fanposts are listed near the top. As a result, I seldom even see fanshots unless they are promoted to the main page. That’s just my experience, but I imagine it’s the same for others.

I'm not really commenting on the substance of the argument

Just that it’s funny to see people on both sides get very touchy over something that’s essentially a minor issue…

RIP Nick Adenhart.

That they’re catfighting over nothing…;-D

Dude, he was like 3 or 4 minutes behind you. Relax.

Also, what are you contracting with that apostraphe?

;P

I love this team.

Oh well

The first year of his deal he was a pretty good 7th inning guy. Don’t know what happened but I hope he finds his game again. (In the NL)

And yeah. I didn’t know which one to post on…this one already had a comment so I picked it.

W6G!

Big stories like this look better as fanposts to me than fanshots, honestly

I remember our ’06 offseason report card that Rev did in which this was our big signing, and Darren Oliver was the dud “D+” or thereabouts if I remember correctly.

My, how things changed. Darren’s been one of the best reliever on the team in 07-09, overall. Of course, that’s partially by default, since he’s one of the only guys to play on each of those three teams.

Sad--Speier was so good for so long

It’s sad to see him go. I’m sure he’ll get picked up by some other team in the meantime, but if he doesn’t, it would be cool to see him re-signed to a minor league deal and sent down to figure his stuff out. It’s still there, as we saw flashes of his old brilliance in the first few weeks of this season—remember when he had the BEST ERA ON THE STAFF at the end of April?

This is kind of like the Carrasco release. An “in-speirered” signing followed by a disappointing release after a fantastic start to his Angels career (I remember how “nails” Speier was considered before going down with that stomach bug in ’07 and then for most of the rest of that season) was followed by mediocre numbers.

Mind you, this is a guy with a career ERA+ of 115, who posted one of his best years in his first year as an Angel, in 2007, with an ERA+ of a staggering 158, with a regular ERA of 2.88, with 47K’s in 50.0 innings pitched. Let’s not bag on him too hard, considering his awesome contributions that year.
Farewell, Justin. May you do well in your venture next!

RIP Nick Adenhart.

But who?

will do the team introductions in a funny impersonation when the team plays on Fox Saturday Baseball now?

by turs12 on Aug 11, 2009 10:15 PM PDT reply actions

We can now turn to GMJ for his impersonations of a true baseball player

or his impersonation of a journeyman who suddenly hits the big $$$ contract lotto.

Bummer...

to see a guy to whom Arte and the Halos committed so much money fail.

Best of luck in the future, Justin.

Heck, look at what happened to Jeff Weaver and JC Romero. Both have rings now. Wacky.

I love this team.

3 back to back homers is how they released him. Sad to see him go, in a perfect world the Angels would be able to keep everyone an angel, but when you’re not performing, somethings gotta give.

If it were up to me i’d still have king fish, velarde, disarcina, erstad, glaus, edmonds, ga, donnelly, perci, and last but not least SHIGGGY still in our clubhouse lol.

In Kobe we trust!

by robi s on Aug 12, 2009 5:45 PM PDT up reply actions

I hope he rebounds

And he could sign anywhere for cheap, because the Angels are still on the hook for the salary. I predict a bold San Francisco Giants pick him up on the cheap to bolster their bullpen.

FanGraphs article about Speier's release

Speier Regresses Right Out Of Anaheim

Give it a read.

Here are some quotes from the article:

“HR/FB rate, as you may know, is not particularly predictive, especially among relief pitchers (due to sample size issues). Just like Speier’s low-ish HR/FB rate in 2006 didn’t mean he had a special skill that allowed him to rack up 380 foot outs, neither does his 2009 performance mean that he’s missing the ingredient that allows major league pitchers to keep the ball in the park. It’s likely just noise, and certainly shouldn’t be the kind of thing that would make the Angels take such a dramatic turn in their evaluation of his value. "

“But Speier is basically the same guy he was in 2006, only a bit less lucky.”

by XYZ123 on Aug 12, 2009 9:59 AM PDT reply actions

The article cherry picks the hell out of his stats.

It acts like 2006 was some kind of aberration instead of noting that he had three back-to-back seasons under 3 ERA and ignoring that Speier’s HR/FB were never as high as this going all the way back to 2002, when he was playing in freaking COORS.

In short, more sabermetric bullshit posing as foresight.

by Zu Long on Aug 12, 2009 10:20 AM PDT up reply actions

eyes

Stats don’t have ‘em. But someone with eyes could see that Speier’s pitches in 2008 and 2009 were much flatter, and more in the middle of the hitting zone than they were before. Throw the ball over the middle of the plate, and major league hitters will hit it. Throw it on the corners and you’ll get outs. In many cases, the difference between a “380-foot out” and a HR is the placement of the pitch. He was putting it where it would become a home run.

by jjackflash on Aug 12, 2009 10:35 AM PDT up reply actions

Well said

It was apparent to me that Speier was a good guy and a good teammate, but just couldn’t help the team. There were times when it looked like his pitching was coming around, and then he’d lay an egg.

I don’t know if many would share my opinion, but in light of what this team has been through with the Adenhart tragedy and the injuries, I think trading and releasing players might be a more dicey proposition this year because of what this group has been through together. To me, Speier’s clubhouse presence can’t be overestimated, and I have felt that way since that Boston game when the umpiring crew mishandled the Beckett throwing incident so badly.

by California Cajun on Aug 12, 2009 12:37 PM PDT reply actions

True

He is kind of like this team’s Donnelly — the guy you know would throw the ball through the other guy’s helmet to protect a teammate. He’s a good guy and I wish it would have worked out, but I’m excited about Trevor Bell … and something had to give.

by Brody on Aug 12, 2009 1:26 PM PDT up reply actions

personally I like him

he seemed like a great guy to hang around.

As far as the pitching, this move was long overdue & I wish him the best of luck just because he does seem like a nice, sincere guy

The Downward Speier has hit rock bottom

Bummer. Good luck, pally. I hope you get your mojo back.

This season is my best chance to get called out of the stands to pitch.
