Joe Posnanski: GMJ contract only #6 worst contract in baseball
Rejoice! We're not that bad after all.
Money quote (not sure if this is damning with faint praise):
"One funny part of this, though, is that I don’t think the Angels have a lot of buyer’s remorse here. They are a weird team, the Angels. They just chug along, year after year. They pretty wildly overpay for a player now and again. They give players odd roles. They do odd things that make you wonder what the heck is going on over there. But they make the playoffs almost every year, and they seem to deal pretty well with whatever mistakes they make. Matthews plays quite a lot for the Angels, and he has a 69 OPS+, but the Angels continue to score runs like crazy. It’s just weird over there."

love it.
Comments like that make me proud to be an Angels fan. Was the contract a mistake? Of course. They could have moped about it, forced a trade and paid most of his salary, or allowed the whole situation to get ugly with regards to his playing time. Instead they have made the most of a bad decision and actually extracted some value from Sarge Jr.
Excellent article
In my humble opinion. Everyone in the nation, with the exception of the Matthews family, agrees that this is a horrible contract. Most of us said, “What the hell?” when he was signed. I was hopeful (the rays of optimism cloud reality), but GMJ has been pretty much awful since the moment we heard that he was a HGH user. But, Posnanski is right, the Angels just keep chugging along.
I’m always surprised when GMJ earns a panther…just like yesterday. But, the odds are that he’ll be DFA’d one of these days, and we’ll eat the contract just like the Brew Crew did with Bill Hall and the Jays did with B.J. Ryan.
In Remembrance of Nick Adenhart, Courtney Stewart, Henry Pearson. Heal soon Jon Wilhite.
I want Andrew Thomas Gallo to be a pinata, and the Angels supply the bats...
Oh, and W6G.
and
GMJ has a lot to do with why the Angels are great.
After one year they realized they screwed up and went and signed Torii. Angels understand sunk costs as well as anyone.
They don’t whine that the player is overpaid, and the player knows to shut his mouth when he becomes a backup (see J. Guillen).
Teams screw up contracts all the time, but having tons of money and handling it like this is how you win.
Yay!
WE WILL WIN WITH WHAT WE GOT.
R.I.P. Nick Adenhart, Marquis Cooper, Steve McNair, and Frank Grimes, or Grimey, as he liked to be called

Classic quotable line...
“We should just refer to bad contracts as Riccardi’s.” LMAO
This team is our extended family, That's why we love them no matter what the record, no matter what the score.
Anyone notice
Hud getting on GMjr’s case lately? On the radio while Trevor Bell was pitching, Matthews made an error on a grounder and Rex said he looked “lackadaisical” on the play and then followed it up with “Torii Hunter will be back out there soon.” And then last night when he missed that shallow fly ball, Rex brought up that same error again, and he and Phys continued to harp on the fly ball, calling it a play that a “big league center fielder should always make”. Kudos to Rex for calling it like he sees it. It brings more credibility to showering one of ours guys with praise when hes willing to call someone out like that.
actually...
I think the word he used was “nonchalant”, but you get the idea.
