Songs about Baseball
Recently in Jerry Crowe's column in the Los Angeles Times he has mentioned several baseball-themed songs. Some are well-known such as Fogerty's "Centerfield", Sinatra's "There Used to Be a Ballpark", and Cashman's "Willie, Mickey & the Duke" (Talkin' Baseball). This inspired me to dig around and find some of these and other baseball songs.
I found a Detroit-themed version of the last one on YouTube:
DETROIT TIGERS Talkin' Baseball Tiger Stadium (via FieldingFowler)
Another song mentioned was one I'd never heard of, Dave Frishberg's "Van Lingle Mungo":
Sue Raney---Van Lingle Mungo (via Dandelatorre)
And then Steve Goodman's "A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request", which is great and mentions our favorite team as part of the long-suffering fan's eternal reward:
Steve Goodman: A Dying Cubs Fan's Last Request (via cubbymark)
No mention was made of Danny Kaye's recording of "The Dodger Song", a favorite from my childhood, and it's just too bad there isn't a video of him performing it but I did find a recording accompanying a mildly amusing Lego version:
The Dodgers Song! (via fuzzylogic1025)
Understandably, there was no mention of Kenny Rogers' schmaltzy song, "The Greatest", based on a cute joke your minister might use during a sermon, but I liked this video that utilized it very nicely:
Kenny Rogers Baseball Song - "The Greatest" (via GinoEast)
There is this gem about Willie Mays:
Treniers - Say Hey (Willie Mays Song) (via Nocaro)
And I think this one is my favorite. It proves that there's another thing that umps can't do properly. Well, some of them:
The Baseball Song - Matt Wessel (CFL 2007) (via MattWesselMusic)
Train's "Calling All Angels" seems to work for now, but I think we need a song of our own, one just for us.
Fairly good fan tribute to 2002, here:
Calling All Angels (via sportfan48)
I still get a bit teary when I hear this song, because of Nick.
P.S. Thanks to Jerry Crowe's column in today's Los Angeles Times I ran across the following video. I'm not sure if this is old news, but watch for the guy in the green jacket. I think we all know him:
Baseball Boogie (via choorel)
P.P.S. Thanks to Higz
Ultramagnetic MC's - Saga Of Dandy, The Devil, And Day Remix (via MCBucky4)
Here's a version of "Centerfield" made for an English class project:
Centerfield - John Fogerty - Music Video (via MyHomemadeVids)

It really isn't that difficult to embed a video...
NOTICE: On Youtube, on the upper right-hand side it says URL and EMBEDED. Copy the code for Embeded and paste into body of the blog post you are writing. That should work like a charm.
A simple cut and paste. To make sure it works, press “preview” before you publish the blog.
If that doesn’t work, a quick google search should show you how to embed videos on blog posts.

I intended to only post links.
When I saw that the links were dead I edited it to embed the videos. They were embedded before your first post, though, because I checked and no one had posted.

Also, these tunes are rock-centric....
What about De La Soul’s “Fanatic of the B word” off their seminal album De La Soul is Dead???
The chorus which goes:
Come on everybody let’s baseball
Come on everybody do the baseball
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Come on everybody let’s baseball

Howevs, I prefer the Ultramgnetic MCs “Saga of Dandy, the Devil and Day” about the Negro Leagues featuring the greatest rapper ever KOOL KEITH

Why don’t y’all play that pitch
The right manager gonna be in the game
[moe love]
It’s the top of the ninth
Josh gibson is at the plate
The bases are loaded, it’s a three and two count
And here’s the pitch
[kool keith]
Steppin up to the plate, first batter
[moe love]
Kool keith
[kool keith]
Black baseball, it was a known fact jack
With the weather so hot, who could play like danny day
The greatest and the best, like the satchel brother paige
Long tom and little bomb, in the hall of fame
Like josh and bunt, be alert, duck
Everybody was down for beer and peanuts
Foxes in their sunday’s best, their brightest dress
[moe love]
And on deck, ced g
[ced g]
Now baseball today troop, is mostly not racial
But back in the days it was all segregated
The whites had the majors and then the blacks had the negro leagues
They both had great talent but then us blacks have no history
Of all our great players, the teams in the ballpark
But we’re here to shed light, restore the glory they haven’t got
Black baseball, they paved the way
With players like dandy, the devil, and day
(repeat 3x)
Black baseball
[moe love]
Bring er home
[ced g]
Now the ballparks they played in was very far from a stadium
They only sat hundreds troops as opposed to the thousands
But the stands they was packed, for the league that was fat
With teams like the baccarats and the homestead grays
The eagles and many more, came ready to play
In cities like birmingham, newark and chi-town
The bus trips were very long, paychecks would bring a frown
But not to these players, cause they really loved baseball
You could ban them from majors, but not from the game
With players like leon day, who pitched almost every day
His arm would hold up, blowin hitters with smoke away
And then there was bullet joe, also was smokey joe
King richard and savateen, and brothers like ed pole
Next, batter up!
[moe love]
Bring it home keith!
[kool keith]
They took the long great line that was so fine
Super and strong to play, three games a day
Hey hey, thunder twins are up and gonna win again
Make the other players say “oh him again!”
But whattya know?
[ced g]
Black baseball (baseball) they paved the way
With players like dandy, the devil, and day
(repeat 3x)
Black baseball (baseball)
[kool keith]
Poppa bell was cool, broke any catcher’s rule
On the base, at night, total speed rip the light
Comin past flick flash he was so fast
Scouts watchin in awe at what they saw
The best in the game, it’s a shame, you don’t know
Alex and double duty, and don’t forget juty
Talent was there, and it was black
[ced g]
Give them their credit folks, and build em a hall of fame
Where legends can rest, with uniforms and the whole shebang
And honor the players, coaches fans and the ballparks
From the giants or phillies, to the new york like yankees
The pittsburgh crawfords, yeah they don’t have to thank me
Just thank the red bull’s, just thank the abe manley’s
Just thank rufus lewis, a few names that grab me
Black baseball (baseball) they paved the way
With players like dandy, the devil, and day

And we’re out

And we’re gone

Nice research on your videos!
I doubt there’s a video for the song I posted unfortunately. If you find one, I would love to see it.

Well, it's a video, of sorts.
Just photos of the performers. Hopefully someone will do a tribute version using this recording.
Have you seen the book, “We Are the Ship?” I think the paintings from that would be beautiful with this.

I think that’s a remix but still a good song nonetheless
We are the Los Angeles Angels of the late 2000s
Was at a kool keith show in hollywood back when he was doing black elvis.
He came out in a cape and threw ziplock baggies full of cooked chicken wings to the crowd.
TonZ-of-GunZ
I heard about that show
I met Keith at a show in Hollywood way back when Sex Style came out. He kept talking about Deney Terrio. Funny guy. But this was before he was going on stage so he was probably nervous as hell.
The last interview I read with him he was obsessing about breeding and genetics. Such a weird dude.
We are the Los Angeles Angels of the late 2000s
When he was on Geffen he wouldn't show up for shows because he could never remember his lyrics...
amongst other things.
Yeah, he is a weird dude.
Front vinyl holsters some acid pellets from the box
Big tanks sash German Spanish thoughts I be servin’
More beggars in trucks, shippin’ weight to Las Vegas
Bicentennial bombs with leather straps for your arms
Garments and bags from hefty, I’m a lefty
Welcome to Weapon World
Has the effect to put a six foot gorilla
With the skin of an alligator, aluminum
With the aluminum skin of an alligator
To a 4 point 8 Pterodactyl
That’s a Dragon Plus with a twist
TonZ-of-GunZ
Yes!
I came here to make sure Ultramag got their due. They have many baseball references in multiple songs, and the best part is that they’re usually a little more obscure or comical, and often out of left field, so to speak. One of my favorites is “Two Brothers With Checks (San Francisco, Harvey)”:
“Drivin’ from Cooperstown, swingin’ like Don Hahn,
Rhythm X in the batter’s box.
Thurman like Munson, left while I swing right
and change courses and dialogue.
Regional Atlanta, Alabama Savannah
I kick a rhyme like a ball to Indiana,
Missouri, Kentucky, like Dent, call me Bucky
Rogers I’m nice, I float in space wild.
Dr. Smith, I’m dope, yo watch Sparky Lyle
As I throwback a spitball, my slider and check back.
The stadium’s packed rope, the people should get back
and walk to the plate, yo Jerry Grody- pause.
Swing swing swang! I get MCs on my third strike
My hot dog is done, I’m in the dugout, check it:
I know I wreck shop, tip-top, heads bop, heads drop
and many rappers get senile
Back to the plate, see the catcher, pitcher
You in the audience man, you be the fan
Like Supercat- Don Don Dada
I play the field in New York, and hit Jamaica
Like Giants I roll like San Francisco, Harvey
No time for raps with caps in Bristol cream
I’m makin’ moves.. yo man..”
Other memorable lines:
“Pickin’ up, swingin’ that bat like Joe Morgan
Catchin’ that beat like Ray Fossey, Oakland.”
“As I roll like I’m Charlie Hough, kickin’ that ball down
The crowd is wild, need the gas for a mile.”
Here is the video. Not the best quality.
Apologies in advance.
Cool. This is taking me down memory lane.
I can’t even listen to hip-hop anymore. It’s just terrible now.
We are the Los Angeles Angels of the late 2000s
Yes and no.
It still exists, it’s just a little less accessible. It moved back underground where diamonds and autotune are not a factor. You can find real forms of all music right along side it too. That’s one of the best things about the internet, or Amoeba Records if you’re lucky enough to live near one.
Apologies in advance.
Er, no. There is one swing-based song (Say Hey),
one actual blues song (Van Lingle Mungo), two that are folk-based, and a novelty patter song.
There are only two actual rock songs, if you consider disco a bastard son of rock.
I didn’t include everything I found, just a few.
Would it make you happy if I included Yankee Daddy’s “Rompe”?

Lyrics to Terry Cashman's California Team version
A sample is available here:

The Angels came in ‘61
To play in California’s sun
Bill Rigney was the Manager that year
Daddy Wags could hit the pill
Take a Chance up on the hill
And junior circuit baseball was finally here
Talkin’ Baseball, Bilko Bo Belinsky
Angel Baseball, Pearson and Osinsky
Rick Reichardt and Fregosi on the scene
Jim Spencer, “The Singer Throwing Machine”
Talkin’ Baseball, the California team
The Halos’ wings were up and down
But Johnson won The Batting Crown
The locals were all taken by The Express
There was never a lack of cash in the Angel saddlebags
And in ’79 Gene Autry rode his Champion of the West
Talkin’ Baseball, Mick “The Quick” and Lyman
Angel Baseball, Vada, Chalk and Ryan
McMullen, Figueroa and Fairley
Don Baylor, he was an MVP
Talkin’ Baseball, The California team
When you’re Talkin’ Angel baseball,
Lee Thomas and Bob Knoop
Clyde Wright won twenty games
Messersmith he did the same
Ryan’s four no-hitters in three years
The batters were in tears
Scioscia has ambition
And with the Angels’ ammunition
They’re aiming for the Series in the Fall
We’ve got Kennedy and Scott
And "The Rally Monkey’s" hot
Tim Salmon’s fine in Anaheim
So let’s play ball
Talkin’ Baseball, Anderson and Gil
Angel Baseball, Jarrod Washburn on the hill
Darin, Glaus and Eckstein on the scene
Percivil and Ortiz have the steam
Talkin’ Baseball, The California team

"Right Field" by Peter, Paul and Mary
The anthem of my awkward youth.
"Death to the opposition!" - Commander Worf, First Baseman: The Niners
Mrs. Robinson
Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?
A nation turns its lonely eyes to you,
Woo-woo-woo.
What’s that you say Mrs. Robinson?
Joltin’ Joe has left and gone away
Hey hey hey.
Angels baseball. We do what we must, because we can -- HaloDutch
what I love is DiMaggio was so thick he misunderstood the song
He was like, “whattya mean ‘left and gone away? I’m Mr. Coffee dammit’” Someone had to explain to him that it meant he was the last American hero. What an ass.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
But having said that, nothing captures the pure joy of the game more than Fogerty's Centerfield.
Angels baseball. We do what we must, because we can -- HaloDutch
I like Centerfield, but I didn't post it because everyone knows it.
Maybe I should, though.

There's a fairly new
one—it’s Country, so don’t kill me.
“Load up the Bases” by Whiskey Falls.. it’s pretty good. And not TOO country, if you know what I mean.
I considered it but it's about the Red Sox, isn't it?
I looked for something country but I couldn’t find anything by Lyle Lovett.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
Nope..
There are actually different versions for each team. They are a nice group of guys, too. Lead singer is married to a soap actress. More country rock than straight country, too. If you do a search for them and hear it, it’s a mighty cool song.
The reason I asked about the Red Sox is that the first three versions that were not concert recordings
seemed to be about the Red Sox and mentioned them prominently. The live concert recordings were too noisy to make out the words.
Here’s one that I like that uses their recording and mixes a high school team’s game with the concert footage:

The First Baseball Game By Nat King Cole.
Great song by Nat King Cole about how baseball is seen in the Bible.

This band also had an awesome song about Harvey Haddix...check out their album, it kicks ass and is entirely about baseball(band is made up of old alt-rock legends)
Lyrics to “Past Time”
When Campy Campaneris played all nine positions in a game.
When Pete Rose demolished Ray Fosse he was never the same.
31 wins and an album on Capitol for Denny McLain.

One thing you can say about time is that it always passes.
One thing you can say about the game is that it’s not getting any faster.
You can get tangled up in a ball of rubber bands and twine, the cowhide and pine tar, snuff, spit and chalk dust lines.
Two round-trippers and a nohitter, that’s Rick Wise (not Bobby Wine).

Only one baseball song matters
even if it’s technically a softball song, and it’s the one from the Simpsons called “Talkin’ Softball.”
Also, the Train song the Angels use is one of the worst songs in modern recording history. It’s an atrocious joke, and they really are one of the most melodramatic douchebag bands ever.
Sorry folks, I really had to say it. I just can’t stand hearing it at the stadium…and so many of my friends give me shit for it, and it’s impossible to defend.
