Answer to your question is:

NO, our fan base outside of Anaheim in not really that bad.

BUT our fan base outside of Southern California is almost nonexistent.

yup

It’s hard to follow a west coast team if you live in the east. I have to get up for work at 5am. There is no way i can stay up until 1am every night to watch the Angels. I hate it, but that’s the way it is.

As far as road attendance goes, I wanted to go see the Angels play the Sox or Skanks this year, but I refuse to pay the prices they want at those ballparks.

RIP Nick. We will miss you!

Welch and I represented in Baltimore

But I think the real problem is that fans of other teams think like this:

Fan1: “Hey, want to go see a ballgame?”

Fan2: “Sounds good, our team has been playing well lately. Who are they playing?”

Fan1: “The Angels”

Fan2: (craps his pants) “No thanks. We’ve got no chance against them. Besides. I have to get to the dry cleaners before they close.”

In order to build a fanbase outside of California, we'd have to get the same kind of

love the Sox and Yankees do on ESPN.

Why is it Pathetic?

Not that many people are moving from California to Minnesota… Generally, more people move here from out of state. Hence, the overwhelming douche bag fans from New York, Boston, etc… that drive from Lake Forest, CA to root root for the away team.

No, more than once. We spend a lot of time in Seattle, and

Angels fans are easy to spot in the stands. I’ve seen them in Oakland, on the street; not a lot but some. And the last game we went to in Oakland, half the plane was wearing Angels hats and shirts.

Last fall I was in Connecticut and Massachusetts for a week, helping my niece move into her college dorm, and I saw several Angels caps, and we were nowhere near Boston at the time. One was on a student at Yale, and Yale is inside of RedSox territory.

On the trip I just took to Wyoming, I saw two Angels caps and several more shirts being worn. Now maybe some of those people I saw were from SoCal and just on vacation, or had just moved to these new exotic spots, but not all of them.

When we lived near Oakland there was a pizza joint in Pacific Heights (SF) that had a

Sandy Koufax-signed baseball on the counter, which was a bit remarkable. The owners were great big guys so I don’t think anyone would mess with them, and most of Pacific Heights is genteel.

There are neighborhoods on both sides of the bay where I wouldn’t wear Angels gear at any hour of the day, and this from a woman who locked her keys in her car at midnight in the Castro and wasn’t particularly worried.

Back in 2003, I ran into a group of fellow Angel fans in the French Quarter. We got shit faced drinking “brain freezes” and Cajun bloody Mary’s. And there seem to be quite a few of us Halo fans in Nevada and Arizona, of course that could be due to the close proximity of SoCal.

The biggest reason for this is selection

I did a triple take when I counted because the Angels have only played 3 road games in the 3 most populated AL stadiums. They have played 3 @ the Yankees, and 0 road games in Anaheim obviously, and they have yet to visit Fenway Park. I’d have to imagine every other playing at least 10 road games in those stadiums by now.

Then since the Angels are the only AL West team in the upper half or home attendance of course their road stat are going to look brutal. We given Texas, Oakland, and Seattle a boost in their road stats while they are a HUGE drain on us, especially Oakland.

by MH252525 on Aug 19, 2009 2:23 PM PDT reply actions

and for anyone who doesn't think this is it

I did a quick calculation. If the Angels replaced 4 away games @ OAK with 4 @ NY, just that one 4 game swing would move them up 7 and almost 8 spots in that road attendance averaage.

by MH252525 on Aug 19, 2009 2:28 PM PDT up reply actions

and I would also consider...

…how home attendance for many teams trail off as the season goes by and the home team falls out of contention. So a visiting team that comes to town during the first couple of months of the season will outdraw any team that shows up to town once the local team has folded for the sea on. for example, what are the attendance averages for Baltimore/Cleveland/Toronto now, versus May/June (based on same visiting teams)?

These are good points

I thought about the divisional issue too. This explains a good amount of the drop-off, but not all of it. It is annoying to see the Dodgers at or near the top of both home and road attendance.

Nothing to see here

Does anyone believe the Padres are 6th in road attendance because they have a great fan base? Hell no, they’re 22nd in attendance at home. How about the Pirates, 12th in road attendance? Nope, they’re 28th in attendance at home. But both those teams have multiple high-drawing teams in their own division. The Angels are stuck in a division with the #16, #17, and #30 teams on the attendance list.

There are 13 teams who average over 30,000 a game, not including the Angels. The Angels have played just 12 road games against those 13 teams. Only four of those were played on a Friday or Saturday night, when attendance is highest. That means that the Angels have played 55 of their 59 road games either against teams that average less than 30,000 fans anyways or at non-peak days and times. I’m not blaming the fans for this one.

R.I.P Nick

by RexTookMyStash on Aug 19, 2009 3:05 PM PDT reply actions

my own unscientific determination...

…was how easy it was to buy solid Angels gear in a big city away from home. Few years ago I had to order everything online. We’ve joined the select few big market teams that seem to have hats and such available in most sporting goods stores. At least from my limited experience.

Sometimes numbers lie. The division-argument was already made above, and honestly as long as the home stadium stays filled, I’m not worried. Sure, there aren’t legions of out-of-state Angels fans like, say, the Red Sawx have, but they can have all the frat boy bandwagoner douchebags they want.

Hey! Let's not be disparaging people because of their area code.

I have family and friends there, and I used to live there when it was the 714, starting before Orange County was included in that area code. I can’t remember but I think they were the same area code as LA … or maybe it was San Diego… or split between them. .

by opiejeanne on Aug 20, 2009 11:30 AM PDT up reply actions

?????????

The 714 Area Code once stretched from the Mexican border all the way up to the LA County border, and went inland all the way to the California border, and stretched up along the Nevada border to include both the Inyo and Mono counties.

I have lived in OC since 1962 and it was the 714 then, and have watched the 714 dwindle until the only place it remains is North Central OC. And I have been a telecom pro since the late ’70s.

To my knowledge, OC has ALWAYS been inside what has been the 714.

by Stirrups on Aug 20, 2009 5:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I.... maybe I'm wrong about that then.

When I moved to Riverside in 1970 I would have sworn that OC was in a different area code.

My point was intended to about the silliness of supposing superiority/inferiority based on area codes. Sorry, I shouldn’t take it seriously, but I really felt burned a couple of years ago by a woman who made an offhand account about the 909ers as if they were sub-human, and it still annoys me.

My experience with OC people has been about the same as everywhere else,

people are decent and behave themselves with the few notable exceptions, but those are the exceptions.

It’s the edited-for-maximum-titillation the I object to, the idea that every HS girl is going commando or whatever insanity is being peddled as the norm for this area. I find myself having to explain and defend this area far too often to my Missouri cousins and it’s really annoying.
Meh.
They have a really unrealistic idea of how things work here, anyway. My favorite cousin asked us in all seriousness, how many celebrities do we see on average each week. She’s ready to move here just so she can meet Jay Leno.

My sister’s ex works as an extra, and has doubled for Clint Eastwood a couple of times so he is around actors a lot. As a result my niece was at a wrap party with Zac Effron a couple of weeks later and there are lots of stories, like the time Anthony Hopkins fed the girls lunch when they were little, and played card games with them while their dad was in a scene as a double in some movie or other. I kid him that he left them alone at lunchtime with Hannibal Lecter, but California is really not what my mid-Western relatives think it is.

by opiejeanne on Aug 22, 2009 8:46 PM PDT up reply actions

My first-person celebrity moment came with Jack Lemmon

My father and I used to volunteer as labor for the LA Open back when it was run by the LA Junior Chamber of Commerce. For several years we did Special marshal duty, escorting golfers around the course. Then we turned that over to others to enjoy and started doing the grunt work. Setting up the course, tearing down, running trash duty in between. I was on a crew with CEO’s and CFO’s and we were all regular guys picking up trash and hauling loads to the dumpsters all week. The golf gallery just looked down on us all like we were loaned to the event off the county honor farm. We sweated, we stank, we went without food and drink. We worked hard. We had a gas.

One year, after the Wednesday Pro-Am, my dad and I wrangled an ice run to the major event tent in the clubhouse. Doing this often enough put us on great terms with bartenders and hostesses, which my dad enjoyed very much. So this year we were done with all else, and the parties were winding down. We did our delivery and found an abandoned corner in the ballroom, grabbed a few cocktails each and parked our butts at an empty banquet table.

There we were, taking a breather before wrapping up and dashing off for 5 hours of sleep. In walks Jack Lemon, who heads directly for the bar. He grabs his drink and surveys the scene. Scanning the whole room looking for something interesting to get mixed up in, he spies the two of us. Our volunteer jackets and caps are a dead giveaway and he know full well that we are two of the guys laboring away for free, 18 – 20 hours a day, to keep this tourney afloat. He makes a beeline for our table and begs permission to join us. Gladly, we oblige. Forget all the hoity-toity wannabes cruising the taped down carpets, Jack wanted to hang with regular guys. He makes himself comfortable, introduces himself, and proceeds to regale us with stories and jokes and conversation for a couple of hours.

I was never so thrilled to sacrifice my much-needed sleep as I was that evening. What a great, charming, and funny man Jack Lemmon was.

We don't have a Bullpen. We have a Cowpen. Before we get to call it a Bullpen these guys gotta grow a pair.

The SL Bees are playing a four game series here in NOLA

And I’ve gone/am going to every one. They only come once every other year and it’s always so cool. I have to sit at my computer and watch every Angels game on MLB tv and it’s awesome to get to see a bunch of guys playing who I’ve seen in Angels uniforms before. Willits, Wood, S-Rod, Terry Evans, Budde…

It’s great because first of all, all but one of the games in this series is a school night. And secondly, no one sits on the third base side at the games, so I have the whole section right next to the Bees dugout all to myself and I’m right there at field level!

I took some good pics last night at the game that I will upload soon and post them on here if anyone is interested. Also have a funny story of some guy who got Francisco Rodriguez to autograph an old K-Rod card… Francisco says, “Uh that’s the wrong Frankie, man.” and the guy says, “Oh it’s alright.”

2 fold

For one, I agree that Angel fans are not transplant fans and we generally have stayed put in SO CA, so you don’t see a lot of them at other stadiums. I travel for work and try and try and catch as many Angel games as I can on the road, plus wearing the colors when traveling in the off season through airports and train stations never hurts.

But the other part is that the local fans don’t want to go to games when all they see is their team getting crushed by a far better team night in and night out. For them, that’s just not a lot of fun. If I was a O’s or an A’s fane and I had a choice of a game to go to, it would be one I thought we had a chance to win.

Just a thought.

by Big Daddy Dave on Aug 19, 2009 9:23 PM PDT reply actions

Our Players are not promoted by the League or Major Media outlets

So when the Angels roll into town for a three game series, most fans have no clue as to who is on the team. And the next series will be against some inter division, or East coast team, with a lot more recognition among the fan base.

Them 10sec highlights of an Angel game when we win, and 80% of that segment is dedicated to the other team or comparisons to the East Coast, will not help bring in the crowds.

MLB by not spreading the love of the League around more, like the NBA with stars in every city, or the NFL with the teams being treated equally in any broadcast. By letting ESPN just ramble on about the Yankees, and Red Sox, all the time. They are killing the game for the passive fan that might not go to a non-important game, and just wait for the YankSox to roll into town, next season, because that’s all they know about.

Remember the 2002 world series?

Feel proud, because nobody else does.

What do you need a fancy suit for, Charlie, you ain't got no job to wear it to.
