No Longer Stuck in Romania
Well after 13 years of living in Romania I am coming back to America. In 1996 I left California to do some mission/humanitarian work in a country still feeling the strong hold of communism. It was a strange land for me. Everything was foreign; language, culture and even sport. The only thing that you could ever see was football soccer and so I was forced to love a new sport.
In the early years, being internet-less, I longed for news on how the Angels were doing. Once every 6 months I'd cross the border and make it to Hungary where I'd splurge and buy a USA TODAY just so I could see the standings and box scores. It was weird not knowing who any of the players were.
As the years went by, Romania joined the 21st century and I got myself non-stop access to the net. (I know that sounds funny but, well... it took forever.) Soon after I discovered Halosheaven, the best thing since sliced cheese, and joined the family. I was revived!
And now I'm packing up my bags and getting ready to head home. Tuesday, Mrs.Stuck in Romania and I will fly to our new home... Colorado Springs... Wednesday through Sunday the Bee's will be in town and I'll catch my first games in a long long time... I'll try to get some picts.
I'm looking forward to actually being able to see our Angels play live on TV, instead of watching Gameday and following the game threads wondering what is really happening.
Anyway, I just wanted to thank the whole Halosheaven community for getting me back in the game. Being so far away, you made me feel like I was close to home. Now I just gotta figure out what all these new stats are.
Thanks again Halosheaven!
Go Angels!!!

Live just south of Denver...
and get a chance to see the C.S. SkySox a couple times a year. Good cheap entertainment.
Are you gonna be down for the next series with the Bees?
Maybe we could hook up.

Welcome back, Romi!
I would recommend Manitou Springs, myself, but you are close enough! And only a 2-day drive from Angels Stadium. Nice.
We don't have a Bullpen. We have a Cowpen. Before we get to call it a Bullpen these guys gotta grow a pair.
Welcome back!
Having been to Bucharest numerous times, I cannot even imagine what it would be like to live in Romania for 13 years. Have a great time at your first live game this decade. You certainly deserve it!
Welcome back
I’m getting ready to move out to southeast asia and the ONLY reason that makes it work is that the internet will enable me to watch Angels during breakfast. I don’t know how you did it.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
How long are you gonna be there?

I'm considering this a permanent move

My guess is no.
HongKong isn’t SouthEast Asia. That’s generally considered Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia.

Congrats on your return home.
And Colorado Springs is a nice town, too damn cold for me though.

Wow. When you first got there I bet everything seemed to be in Black&White, and now you leave it in all it’s colors.
Now who will be my 12 hour buddy?
Yeah,
Things have defintely changed. I remember when I got here I had hot water once a week. Needless to say I was pretty stinky. Things have changed a lot but corruption is still a force here…

Angels on TV
Make sure you get the MLB Extra Innings package on cable or Direct Satellite TV or MLB.TV on the mlb.com website so you can watch every Angels game. It makes many a cold night in Minnesota bearable and it’s only August!

Honestly...
the only place I have thought of going is Skysox Stadium to see the Bees play. They are in town for a 5 game trip to close out there season the day after we get in.
I guess I’m dying for some real pizza as well. Everything here tastes like cardboard, and instead of pizza sauce they put ketchup on it.

the whole ketchup on pizza thing is a global phenomena
Pizza Hut actually supplies the ketchup packets

Bug, I say In-N-Out, but I guess they don’t have those in CO…

Sonic Burger....
Or the Hat? Or In-N-Out? double-doubles are often imitated, but never duplicated, if you go to In-N-out, get the animal fries.
YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....
There is no substitute for The Hat.
And Sonic Burgers are not duplicates for In’N’Out. In’N’Outs are pretty easy to duplicate, however. And if the operation does not freeze their buns, it’s easy to be superior using the same recipe.
In’N’Out’s magic is not that they are uniquely incredible. It’s that they are fresh enough and simple enough and consistent enough, and merely better than the basic burgers at McDonald’s/Carl’s/Burger King/Wendy’s. And they stick to that limited menu so they can crank out their product like a machine.
We don't have a Bullpen. We have a Cowpen. Before we get to call it a Bullpen these guys gotta grow a pair.
And the fries...
The fries are sooooo good

actually like the basic original premise that McDonalds used to be (in a deluxe format)
before they started cutting costs and going corporate on us
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Absolutely concur Stirrups.
The Hat is beyond compare, and as i’ve said before, best chili cheese fries and pastrami sandwiches around.
YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....
Dude, you cannot order BOTH. Not if you are alone.
So if you are ordering that, call me. I am available to assist.
(One pastrami sandwich can feed two people. One order of chili cheese fries can also feed a pair. So you are inadvertently ordering enough food for 4!!)

Colorado Springs
The “fake In-N-Out” story is absolutely true. Been there, but I don’t remember the name of the place. The story as I understood it is the guy took copious notes in In-N-Out and then set about to replicate the experience. Since In-N-Out is family owned and won’t franchise or expand quickly, he figured that he would be able to have a successful business without the original coming to town to spoil his business and sue him in the bargain.
There is a chain in the mid-Atlantic and coastal Southern States called Five Guys. They likewise studied In-N-Out very closely and have a great chain VERY similar to In-N-Out but with their own regional spin (free peanuts to eat while your order is made, your choice of toppings you order from the menu when you order). The fries are different, but the potatoes are hand-cut in the kitchen daily, the meat is always fresh, the buns are high quality, etc.

There are Five Guys out here. One by Cerritos Mall.
Could the near In – N – Out place be a What-A-Burger? Made famous by fat texans and King of the Hill everywhere.?

I blog about the Angels at The Diamond Aces
I never knew that
Apparently, they decided to franchise (they were originally only in the MD/DC area), but their game is so close to In-N-Out as to invite a visit from a guy in an expensive suit and briefcase.

I think they are new out here
Place has been there less than a year.

I blog about the Angels at The Diamond Aces
5 guys - yep
I have yet to try one but just recently found out about them online and am looking forward to trying it. they are definitely new to the area.
the only real problem I have with In N Out 1) they’ll never add any other side dish besides fries (I’m not really a fry guy, I’d much rather have some onion rings) 2) they always ask me if I want onions on my burger (what proper burger doesn’t have onions?) but never ask if I want a tomato on my burger (no, I don’t) 3) you also have to ask for pickles, which I’ve forgotten to do more than once. what proper burger doesn’t have pickles by default? 4) there’s always a wait. other than that, gotta admit they’re pretty hard to beat. if anything I wish they’d raise their prices a bit, send all those cheap asses in my way to McDonald’s to get something off the dollar menu.
what’s the weirdest thing anyone’s seen at an In N Out while waiting for their food? I have always thought the cheese fries I’ve seen ordered are kinda strange, I’ve found their “secret menus” and didn’t remember ever seeing that one.
but I’m sure there are many other weirder things you can order.
I also (not weird just saying) saw Jim Edmonds at one in Tustin a few late winters ago. he made his wife order for him, which is just a little weird.

Nope. What-A-Burger is another chain. Different burgers.
We don't have a Bullpen. We have a Cowpen. Before we get to call it a Bullpen these guys gotta grow a pair.
There's a plate lunch place in my town
that received a cease and desist letter from In-n-Out burger. They had the name In and Out, and it was close enough to make the owners/lawyers of the burger chain force then to change it.
Those people were begging for it.
They could have at least given it a name that was a clever twist on the original.

The Mrs. is doing great.

Welcome back.
My son-in-law was born two years after his parents left Romania with a suitcase, $50 and his older brother, 30 years ago. I hope the first pizza you order when you get here lives up to your best memory of pizza.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
Wow
You must have a story or two about your days behind the iron curtain. Welcome back to the states!
There was no iron curtain 13 years ago; that ceased to exist around 1991. Remember Reagan?
13 years ago puts Stuck’s arrival in 1996, but Ceacescu’s government fell in 1989. The horrors of Romania under Ceacescu’s personality cult and extreme nationalism were many, and the results of his rule are still with us. Google “Romanian Orphanages” if you’re curious; Ceacescu’s policies forced families to have more children than they could afford and handing these children over to the state to raise became a normal part of life. After the fall of the government there were more than 150,000 children in orphanages that were badly run, and worse, many of the children were HIV positive because of Ceaucescu’s dictates that needles be re-used because AIDS was only a disease of the “corrupt west”.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
I worked with
A developmentally delayed (can’t remember what the exact situation was) kid who’d spent his first five years or so growing up in a Romanian orphanage. Part of his developmental problems were related, I think, to having been beaten/maltreated/malnourished/etc. there. This was all after Ceacescu, of course (I think), but it seems the issues remain.
RIP Nick Adenhart.

The children in those orphanages were extremely neglected and
had a lot of developmental problems. I understand this continued for quite a few years after the fall for various reasons including lack of training, not enough staff, overcrowding, lack of resources, and possibly lack of compassion, added to the lack of will to change and the confusion of a disorganized government.
This horrifying social experiment proved that you can’t just warehouse children and never talk to them or interact with them and expect them to emerge unharmed.
There was an article about a Riverside couple who tried to adopt two of these children about two years after the government changed, and the stories they told were heartbreaking. They had trouble getting permission from Romania to remove them and traveled there to deal with the red tape in person. The wife ended up staying there for about 8 months, volunteering in one of the facilities while they waited for a decision to be made. She said she saw very positive changes in the facility while she was there because so many Americans and Europeans had given money and equipment and their time as volunteers in the orphanages.
When they finally brought their two children to the US they had a lot of problems to deal with because of the incredible neglect they had suffered. The kids were a boy and a girl, two and three years old, and the older one, the boy, hadn’t started talking yet. Neither understood English but that seemed minor.
We lost track of this story when we moved so I don’t know the outcome, but this family was dedicated and had the resources to support their special needs.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
I've been there a few times.
The worst thing I’ve ever seen is the AIDS room that housed all the kids/babies that were allegedly injected with AIDS on purpose in the hospitals. Broke my heart.
I have nothing important to say.
welcome back
Welcome back… BUT, you need to gain a game in fantasy if you wanna make the playoffs! :)
There’s only two weeks left
