Bell couldn't make it out of the second inning Sunday in Toronto and has a 9.49 ERA after his first three big-league starts. But the Angels' only other real choice was to bring Matt Palmer out of the bullpen and put him back into the rotation. Manager Mike Scioscia is reluctant to move Palmer out of the bullpen, where he has become a valuable piece. Palmer's 2 1/3 scoreless innings in Monday's loss lowered his ERA as a reliever to 3.06 in 18 appearances.

Is Abreu a miracle worker? We can't say that, really. Some of these guys would probably have seen more pitches this season anyway, due merely to natural fluctuation and maturation. We might also assume that Scioscia's and Hatcher's "renewed emphasis on plate discipline" would have made some difference, too, even without the addition of Abreu.

Right Decision

Since we didn’t acquire a pitcher this summer, we need to find out if we have one in house – and we don’t have much time left to do so.

Sosh is trying to find an extra pitcher to step up for us, and if so, he’ll put him on the playoff roster.
I figure Sosh has already got Palmer on the post season roster – if Palmer goes back in the rotation, then we won’t be able to audition other in house talent.

I’m not sure Oliver, Jepsen, Palmer, & Fuentes will be enough playoff bullpen, if we can get another pitcher to step up for us – we need to try!
If we’re in danger of losing our playoff spot to Texas, then I’m sure Sosh will put Palmer back in the rotation.
But I think our base 4 rotation should be enough to squeak us by Texas.

If Bell fails, then I’m not sure who else is left to try.
R.I.P. Nick. If he were still alive, this would be a moot point – we could have stopped at Palmer.
As it is, we really need one more decent pitcher since Arredondo & Shields are a bust.
