Joe Saunders Looks Good In Return, Angels Avoid Sweep By Tigers

FINAL SCORE IN ANAHEIM:  Angels 4, Tigers 2

Making his first start in 19 days, Joe Saunders returned to his 2008 all-star form by beating the Detroit Tigers.  Saunders went 5 innings, giving up 4 hits while striking out 6, with his only mistake being a 2-run 5th inning home run to Adam Everett.

Offensive highlighted included a first inning 2-run homer run from Torii Hunter, his first since coming off the disabled list.  The Angels also took advantage of the Detroit battery by swiping 5 bases, two by Chone Figgins.  Figgins also added a run scoring hit in the 4th inning when he singled home Gary Matthews, Jr.

With the win, the Angels snapped a 3-game losing streak and avoided their first home sweep in over 2 years.

looper has the ability to start or be a BP guy

He could be that 5th starter and move to the pen for the postseason. He has done both ( playoffs/RP) before

yeah

I just wanted to make sure nobody read that to mean he was in his 5th season here. plus I got to look it up and run the numbers myself for fun’s sake.

but it is pretty remarkable, especially considering his huge number of injuries the last season and a half, plus 2005 I believe.

and let’s just put it this way, I wasn’t even aware GMJ had 1,000 hits period. that’s how bad that is.

What a pic!

Where’d you get this?

by Brody on Aug 26, 2009 9:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Looking at the attendance, this was probably taken during the 5th inning,

as the photographer was returning to his/her car to “beat the rush”.

Life was pretty lonely inside the park in those days…

I think so. The entire thread disappeared.

I had walked away from the computer with his post on the screen. I tried to answer someone’s comment and got the “closed for posting” message. When I renewed the page, the whole thing disappeared.

Big loss.

Last night's game ended before I went to bed

The post-mortum from last night was amusing. Is the sky still falling?

by Brody on Aug 26, 2009 6:30 PM PDT reply actions

Went to the game today

aside from the obvious bullshit that was the ‘announced attendance of 36,000 fans’ (it filled up by the 4th inning, but it was no where near 30,000, let alone 36,000. I’d guess 24,000 of us made the trip…but I guess that was the season-seat folks not showing up.), the best part of today’s game was this exchange from a 5 year old boy and his mother when Torii Hunter came up in the first inning, and was up on the jumbotron:

Boy: Mommy, why do some people have black faces?
Mom (horrified and whispering as she looks around): Because that’s just the way they are
Boy (after a pause): Why do they choose that?
Mom: We’ll talk later.

"paid" attendance, not turnstile action.

I was there too. I correctly chose “B” on the guess the attendance game specifically becuase it was the highest number offered and I knew that most folks would look around and pick lower, forgetting about all those fair-weather fans who own season tix in the right field bleachers but refuse to abandon their day job and roast in the mid-day fire that is the SoCal August sun.

I was left field, baby. Shade the entire game.

On the downside, I was partnering with my sale team and hosting a contingent of 50 from a large local corporation. And my major contribution was to cook for them all. On the parking lot. In the sun. Three grills going at once. That was fun, but boy did I eat it in that heat.

Left field?

You must mean under the overhang then, right?

Because the left field seats, the ones behind the bullpen and in that area, at least from my vantage point, were cookin’ all game.

Also, in my Angels-watching career, just fairly recently

I’ve been to:

-Vlad’s 1000th Angel hit game
-GMJ’s 1000th career hit game
-G.A.‘s 1000th RBI game
-DaVanon’s cycle game

Not bad for sorta randomly choosing my games.
