Pong.
Played while we waited for the New York decision whether a ball hit by Kendry Morales was a double or a home run.

They showed that one on the FSW Broadcast. It was hysterical.

We were cracking up and we weren't the only ones.
I heard a youngish person whining that it was boring, but that made it funnier.

what if technology had just stopped then
would it be a good thing or a bad thng?

I can see both arguments.

I would posit that it would be a bad thing.
Pong was technology from the 70’s. We were grossly energy inefficient, extremely caustic with our waste management (Love Canal, anyone?), full of hubris (Three Mile Island, NY blackout), incredibly mismanaged (Ford Pinto, Chevy Nova, gas-guzzlers versus OPEC), and busy giving birth to disco.
Since pandora is already out of the box and – sorry Tolkein – there is no going back to our agrarian roots as a society (trading our improved medicine and food distribution systems along with that), I think that the ability of technology to fabricate alternate realities for our brains to submerse themselves within is extremely interesting and full of possibilities that heavily favor the positive.

Since you mention autos...
…what technology has done to help an internal combustion engine burn fuel and exhaust spent fuel more efficiently is nothing short of revolutionary. A lot of the change has been made possible through the advance and use of electronics to monitor and control the combustion process.
If we were still driving cars that were as “efficient” as the standard 70’s vehicles, we’d all be dead from the amount of pollutants in the air . It’ no accident out local air quality has actually improved significantly over the past 30-40 years even though the number of vehicles on the road (and the overall population) has roughly doubled (from memory) in that same time span.

Last year when I had to get my fried ECU replaced just to pass smog, I wanted to punch people like you in the face

...which is the downside...
…the vehicles and repairs are more expensive!
Look at the bright side…you wouldn’t have been gasping and choking after throwing the punch!

A bad thing.

There still would be...
But it would look like craigslist, and be populated by strat-o-matic baseball gamers.

Pong was cool. I still prefer Global Thermonuclear Warfare.
Or Theaterwide Biotoxic and Chemical Warfare.
Either one would be interesting to play during a lull at the stadium.
Whatever dude.

We played "Tank" and some other game with helicopters.
Both were really crude.
Then Zork was introduced, and we bought it and all three of us brainstormed our way through it. Lots of fun. In the middle of the night someone would sit up in bed and say,“I know how to get into Hell!”

I actually tried playing that at work recently, because I was bored and had older, similar games on my mind. Like most games from my childhood that I've revisited, I was let down.
Whatever dude.

Does "twisty maze of narrow passages" ring any bells?

Remember the game "Deathrace"?
Where you drove a car around the screen and scored points by running over people? I think it was banned in a few places, but compared to some of the games now, it seems pretty tame. The cool thing about that game was if it was in an arcade with carpet, you could play for free by creating a static shock on the coin return.
I wasted way too many hours in video arcades and not enough on homework. Still think it was the right choice.
