Jered Weaver, Historical Winner

Today was Jered Weaver's 100th career start. He won for the 47th time, against just 22 losses, giving him a lifetime winning percentage of .681. Do you know how many active pitchers with 100 career starts have a higher winning percentage? One -- Pedro Martinez, with .684. Among active starting pitchers who have pitched at least 50 games, Jered's fifth in career winning percentage, behind Tim Lincecum (.740), Jon Lester (.706), and Josh Johnson (.690).

Among Angel starting pitchers with at least 50 games pitched, Jered is also first all-time in winning percentage. Top 8 list looks like this:
.681 (47-22) Jered Weaver (100 starts)
.651 (41-22) Joe Saunders (87)
.594 (98-67) John Lackey (222)
.582 (46-33) Bartolo Colon (95)
.579 (33-24) Bert Blyleven (80)
.568 (75-57) Jarrod Washburn (183)
.567 (102-78) Frank Tanana (218)
.561 (55-43) Ervin Santana (127)

Do you know how many starting pitchers in Major League history have started at least 100 games and compiled a higher winning percentage than Jered Weaver? Four. Also, Jered leads the American League this year in ... winning percentage!

And to think, as recently as a year ago, Jered Weaver was the object of serial hate-spasms by some of the assembled faithful....

Despite some recent bumps in the road, this is a breakout year for the Weave

and I look forward to seeing him develop as our (probable) ace once Thunder Mountain (likely) decides to find work elsewhere.

Years later, Clutch still needs to chill.

Where would we lost sheep be without mattwelch to correct us all? Woe are we. ;P

I am not sure I am one of those you mention (I’m actually a huge Weaver “fanboy,” having attended his pro debut at Lake Elsinore and his Halo’s debut), but I would imagine even a sage like yourself would be hard-pressed to find something positive to say about Joe Saunders right now. Can you? If so, are you going to write a post next year when he’s 14-8 with a 2.99 ERA saying how “some people here” were throwing him under the bus in August 2009 (and as some have said today) “hoping he’s injured?”

I love this team.

I don't think that people are

“hoping he’s injured” out of malice, but rather hoping that the reason he’s been pitching so poorly is injury, and that once the injury is dealt with, he’ll be back to his old self.

Dude, I've been a Jepsen hater from around April 1 to yesterday

I thought he had mad potential (along w/ Bulger), and hoped this year that he’d get a chance, but even I abandoned hope pretty quick after watching his relationship with the strike zone.

What I would say is that Saunders has been obviously pitching through injury

Not injured, he’s a 4.00 ERA guy who has a Washburn-like knack for competitiveness and winning above and beyond his raw stuff. I expect him to return to that form, when not injured.

Gubi kept mentioning that Saunders was tipping pitches...

or else Texas could not have been so fortunate against him.

Perhaps his DL stint is to figure out what he’s doing to tip pitches.

That's a fascinating statistic, though it has to be pointed out that

what team you play for has a lot to do with that. Still, I’m shocked that 20 game winners like Webb, Carpenter, Halladay, etc. are getting their butts kicked by WTY.

Curveball

Jered’s been getting burned on those slow curve / breaking balls that land in strike zone. He needs to throw that lower or more inside. His other pitches looked excellent today.

nice. if saundo keeps pitching like he does, he is gonna keep sliding down that list.

I've always loved Weaver and ....

even predicted he’d have a good season this year.

However, I think you have the biggest man-crush on Jered out of anyone on this site.

And for the sake of completism, I have been dead wrong about Aybar, K-Mo, D-Mac

Thought Aybar would never figure out how to hit or run the bases. Thought Morales’ ceiling was about 15% lower than how he’s hit (and fielded) his first full-time year. Thought D-Mac would have hit at least 100 big-league home runs by now.

Pedro is active?

Weaver has stuff and showed that since he came up. Hell out of the pen in the playoff’s he was even tougher (good playoff #). Aybar has been a surprise to say the least. I don’t think the FO thought he would throw up such big numbers.

When will you say HK is your most over rated player though? Your 09 prediction of him hitting .340 and being a MVP ballot contender is well laughable. Don’t get me wrong I appreciate your willingness to dangle your thoughts out there in public. My question to you about the 15/80/20 from 2B would be………cant Izzy do that as well?

Howie's raking since he came back up

My prediction was terrible, but he won’t be.

by mattwelch on Aug 10, 2009 1:26 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Had to do better

Not so sure he could have been worse. He has done better but still swinging and missing too much for my taste. His defense seems to have suffered as well. I haven t looked at his # but it appears to have fallen from what I see with the naked eye. My whole thing with HK is he isn’t the Bill Madlock 2B you have pegged him to be.

by Angel Aviator on Aug 10, 2009 4:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, I never thought he'd be as *good* as Madlock, more like a decent knock-off who plays 2B

And he’s racked up 1200+ plate appearances before his 26th birthday, which is like 800 more than Chase Utley did. Dude’s still young, and I just haven’t seen many human beings make line drives like that.

Also, note his K/BB rates:
2006: 5/1
2007: 7/1
2008: 6/1
2009: 3/1

I think/hope this is the crucial year where he reacts to the fact that pitchers will eventually chew up & spit out just about every hitter who strikes out 60 times for every 10 walks.

As for Izturis, I am ecstatic that we have the best backup middle infielder in the big leagues, and I hope Scioscia keeps basically cycling the three guys through the two slots. It’s just that his ceiling feels more finite to me. Howie might just hit his .340 one day; Maicer seems to me to be at the top of his potential at the moment.

But who knows? Maybe he’s a latter-day Carlos Guillen.

Pedro is starting Wednesday

And Howie had the second highest batting average in the AL in July.

He'll look great in pinstripes.

I’m so glad we get the chance to develop him into a star, then send our big boy off to the East Coast.

This season is my best chance to get called out of the stands to pitch.
