LA Seitz: Make ERVIN Angels Postseason Closer
Bill Seitz thinks Scioscia would be better-armed in the playoffs if the back end of his bullpen had a little black magic.

Let’s try it out before the post-season starts… I’m game.

Seitz usually explains his thoughts well.
It seems like a good idea which has been brought up before regarding Ervin.
I like the idea of having two LH relievers, I like Santana playing a major role, and I like the idea of not exercising Fuentes’ option after next season.
Hell, all of us need to be put in our place once in a while.
There’s no way Santana will be completely left off the post season roster, and I don’t think they’re going to save him for long relief.

This has been said before
Tell Ervin to pitch a shutout inning for a day and he’ll do it.

Whether Ervin is closer or not
I am sure he will be used in very high-leverage situations to get critical outs. I would probably feel more confident in having Ervin out there to close a game than Fuentes, but I am doubtful that Mike will unseat Fuentes with 10 days left in the season.

Ervin has done well in the playoffs before in relief
I have been festering on this idea myself for a few weeks. I think it has a lot of merit.
I had hoped Fuentes would get his shit in a pile, but man, even the outs he gets tend to be hit hard right now.
Miss you Nick...! RIP

I think Ervin would be great out of the pen
sounds like a good idea to me, how do we get Soth on board?
My guess is Ervin will just say, Fuck it, Let’s Pitch!

Kevin Jepsen in the second half
32 strikeouts to 5 unintentional walks in 33 2/3 innings pitched. WHIP of 1.01, a .216 / .258 / .256 batting line allowed (just one homer and two doubles) and a total of 7 earned runs. Oh, and he averages 96.2 mph on his fastball and pairs it with a nasty cutter.
Ervin Santana is a nice wild card to keep in the pen for two-inning situations, but damn, what else does Jepsen have to do to get some save opportunities?

I wouldn't mind Ervin closing
Maybe to close out a game when we are up. But Jepsen and Fuentes should be used in a save situation. I actually made the case of putting Santana in the bullpen during the playoffs.

Pitch in a post-season.

Have to start somewhere
Now is his chance.

He'll get his chance
I’d just rather it come in the seventh or eighth instead of the ninth, which is the role he’s been in all year, and the role in which he’s been successful. I’d just like someone with more post-season experience in the closer role.

Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

Re Santana - His 1st inning numbers aren't good at all
and he has a post season era just under 7.
I would rather him come out of the pen for an inning or 2 early if need be, but I wouldn’t put the game in his hands late or trust him starting.
Using Jepsen & Bulger to eliminate a dangerous right handed bat is about the only tinkering I expect when it comes to the 9th inning.

First inning numbers
There’s a difference between the first inning of hopefully seven or eight and the first inning of one o two. I think if he came out cutting loose from the get go instead of saving himself for 100 pitches, those numbers would change.
Long term I want him starting. But with these starters, in this post-season, I think his best value would be as a closer.

I'd be down with this
But not like a normal closer. Have him go 2-3 innings to get the save but only with a full 4 days of rest in between. I don’t think it would be good for him to pitch every day like a normal reliever. In limited use, hitting his peak in the 2nd or 3rd inning, he could be money.
