In defense of Robb Quinlan

Stay connected for news and updates

So as we all know Quinlan has a goofy swing, a bit of an awkward throwing motion, and all around isn't the greatest player around...However I feel like the hate/dislike of him is disproportionate. Also I feel like the statement that Quinlan is Scioscia's man crush are unfounded, in numbers at least. Consider the following

He doesn't play all that much...The most games he ever appeared in in one season is 86 and the most PA's hes ever had is 244, both in 2006. Other than that year he has never had more than 200 PA's in a season, often hovering in the 170 range. This year hes only had 104 PA's. So essentially he gets 1/5 of the PA's of an everyday player, which is about right for a bench player, playing once a week. Additionally, he doesnt play when it matters most...he got 1 PA in the 2007 ALDS and got 5 AB combined between the 05 playoff run...thats all his playoff AB's, so its not like Scioscia is putting him in instead of better players...he using him like any bench player on any team in baseball.

When he does play hes not horrible...awakward yes, horrible not as much as some make him out to be...he can play 1B, 3B, LF, and RF. His numbers has gotten worse each year, but its not like Scioscia keeps trotting him out there in spite of terrible numbers. He received less and less playing team each year since 2006...when he has played (historically at least, maybe not so much this year or last) hes provided some pop off the bench (5-9 HR in 200 PA's or so aint bad). A versatile bench player with a little bit of pop is useful.

He's not stealing money from the Angels...like Hillenbrand, Finley, and GMJ were/are.  Hes made a combined 2.575 million over the past 4 years, including 1 mil this year, so hes made an average of roughly 600K over the past couple of years.

So the point is this...Is Quinlan great? No. Should the Angels resign him? No. Is he replaceable? Yes. But is he worth all the venom that he seems to receive and the assertions that he plays more than other bench players because of some man-crush from his manager? No...so lets give the guy a break, its not as bad as we make it out to be...
