Umpires At It Again in Boston--But Papi Calls Them Out on It!
Big Papi swings and misses on a Sabathia pitch. The umpire inexplicably claims he "heard a ticking noise" and says Papi fouled the ball off.
""That ball did not hit my bat," Ortiz told the umpire."
Fortunately for all involved, Ortiz then actually struck out on the next pitch.
Good to see the Red Sox players at least have some class in these situations. Scared umpires is right--even when they're playing against the Yankees! Wonder if Ortiz will get reported for "verbal abuse" after disagreeing with the ump...Kellogg, though, not Rick Reed!

Sometimes you go by the sound.
Bang-bang plays come to mind. You watch the bag for the touch, and listen for the ball-glove contact. Then check to see if the ball was controlled properly. Then make the call.
On foul tips. Sometimes that’s all you got. With experience, and honesty, you will get a high percentage correct.

true but...
then you get a blown call like Moyer to Howard in game 3 or 4 of the world series last year. moyer did a dive to get a ball, and flipped to howard who barehanded it, thus no “pop” into the glove. thus he was safe. (sorry for another phillies reference).
