Angels Win in Extra Inning KC Pitching Duel

Final Score in Eleven Innings: Los Angeles Angels: 2, Kansas City Royals: 1

A marquee pitching matchup of John Lackey facing Zack Greinke lived up to its billing as both pitchers allowed each allowed one run, Greinke in 8, Lackey in 9. Kevin Jepsen got the win out of the Angels pen after pitching a quick bottom of the 10th. Erick Aybar singled home Torii Hunter to go ahead in the top of the 11th and Brian Fuentes got his 39th save of the season by allowing only one hit in a scoreless 11th.

Star-divide

In the top of the 8th, Chone Figgins hit a rocket by 2B Willie Bloomquist. Because he got some leather on it, the official scorekeeper called it an error, which it clearly was not, but anyway, Maicer Izturis then followed with a clean single. Greinke's ERA would be alright, but he was on the ropes. With one out, Torii Hunter singled home Figgins.

Lackey threw 106 pitches in 9 strong innings. He scattered 6 hits, allowed 1 earned run and struck out 4. Likely AL Cy Younger Greinke was just as dazzling, although he had to expend more pitches to get about the same results. He threw 125 pitches over 8 IP, struck out 8 and again, allowed a run that the official scorekeeper and Zach's parents would have called unearned but anyone else could plainly see was the result of a hit.

The Angels are 8-0 against the Royals this season. First pitch on Sunday is at 11:10 AM.

Say what you will about Fuentes

but he’s not as bad as the numbers show.

70% of his runs this year are in just over 9% of his appearances. When he’s on, he’s on. When he’s off, he’s off. He’s been solid this year.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Sep 5, 2009 7:22 PM PDT reply actions

might i remind you this is the KC Royals were talking about tonight...

and might i remind you that earlier this year, it would’ve been a blown save against this royals team if it wasnt for one of the most amazing catches i have ever seen by torii hunter…

dude is not solid.

6 runs in 48 appearances

14 in the other 5.

I stand by what I said. Which is not that he’s an elite closer, or even a “great” one, but that he, as much as or more than most closers in baseball, gets the job done and keeps opponents down.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Sep 5, 2009 8:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Those stats dont show...

how many times he has been saved himself by Angels defense. Im not entirely sure I understand what your saying.

That he has had 5 bad appearances where his ERA has been astronomical and 48 other appearances where hes been solid? I feel like you could breakdown those kind of stats for any pitcher…

Also, how many hits has he given up in those appearances? Sure, not all of them scored but its damn right nerve-racking when hes out there.

Alas, we spent 6 years with Frankie racking our nerves so i guess were use to it?

You actually wanna know?

Just one. The other 5 were all in 2 or 3 run save situations, or not in save situations at all.

Re: your other points, outside of those 5 awful appearances (which, SURPRISE, only count for one loss/blown save each), his WHIP is 0.89. Virtually untouchable. So, no…in those 48 other appearances, he has been pretty fucking badass.

And no, you can’t do that for every pitcher. Brad Lidge, for example, has had TWELVE appearances in which he has given up multiple runs. There are 24 pitchers in baseball with as many or more blown saves as Fuentes. Amongst those are K-Rod, JOE NATHAN, Jonathan Broxton, and Brian Wilson…all top-notch closers. It just so happens that when Fuentes blows it, he buries the team with 3 or 4 runs. The damage itself is no worse…the result is no worse. The only thing that ends up worse is his ERA, which is all you can really hang on to with the guy when you wanna say he’s been bad.

His save percentage is as good or better than everyone on this list (minimum 20 saves): Francisco Rodriguez, Joe Nathan, Brian Wilson, Kevin Gregg, Brad Lidge, Bobby Jenks, George Sherrill, Matt Capps, Rafael Soriano, and Frank Francisco.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Sep 5, 2009 9:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Very good investigating there CKoD
It just so happens that when Fuentes blows it,

everyone on this awesome MOST LUMINOUS of a site take great notice of the Dinoman, and never notice the others.
All this can be blamed on the total bias by this site on everything not able to become Panther in the rest of the MLB.

by eyespy on Sep 5, 2009 9:57 PM PDT up reply actions

He's blown 5, and it's resulted in 4 losses.

I thought he had blown more than 5, so that’s a relief.
Burying your team is worse than just blowing a save though, since a blown save doesn’t always lead to a loss.
In 2007, the Angels did not lose a game that Krod had blown, and he blew 6 or 7.

Fuentes doesn’t suck, but I’m much more comfortable with post ASB jepsen or bulger on the mound. Fuentes is new to the league, yet he’s sporting a .250 baa and has bad post all star break numbers. His velocity sucks compared to last year, all this talk about that being normal, he’s a slow starter was all bs. He was throwing 93-95 consistently last year in September, and he’s at 91-92 this year. Big difference.

by Quinlan's Goofy Swing on Sep 5, 2009 10:12 PM PDT up reply actions

A team losing its blown saves

is not uncommon at all. The 2007 Angels were an exception, not a rule.

When 70% of your ERA is accounted for in 4% of your innings pitched, your stats are slanted…fucking MASSIVELY. It’s the statistical way of life when your sample size is as small as a closer’s is.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Sep 5, 2009 10:19 PM PDT up reply actions

You are talking about all blown saves being equal, whether you give up 5 or 1

I’m saying they aren’t.
Fuentes is sporting a .250 baa, that sucks.
post all star break, his baa is .278 with a 1.53 whip.

He has been fortunate to only have blown 5 saves, but the angels have good defense and I know he got doinked around with some cheap hits early. That stuff evens out.
His baa and whip are garbage compared to any other reliever, and their are 15 of them, with more than 25 saves.
Sorry, but his numbers are not good, other than only having 5 blown saves. For that, I will give him credit. His numbers tell me he should have many more.

by Quinlan's Goofy Swing on Sep 5, 2009 10:27 PM PDT up reply actions

One thing going for him

he hasn’t logged a lot of innings compared to the other potential playoff closers.
I just wonder where the velocity went.

And for my post above, his numbers are worse than all but three of the relievers with more than 25 saves, he’s right on pay whip and baa wise with bobby jenks, cordero, and LIDGE (thank god we don’t have that guy).

by Quinlan's Goofy Swing on Sep 5, 2009 10:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Fuentes has never been a power pitcher

He’s always topped out around 91

Fangraphs has his average fastball at 89.9 now, last season it was 91.6, season before it was 90.4

He relies on location and deception and they’ve both been off at times this season

by Epic Dean on Sep 6, 2009 12:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Do you not grasp the math on this?

Seriously man. It’s not that hard. You look at his numbers and say “they look bad, but the results haven’t been as bad, so he’s gotten lucky.”

But that’s bullshit. Because the way an averaging of statistics works is that any one given performance is going to be ‘stretched’ across all the others, thus tainting all stats to look worse than they really are. The simple fact is that Fuentes goes out there, and in NINETY-SIX PERCENT of his innings, gives up one or fewer runs. NINETY-SIX percent.

Mariano Rivera gives up one or fewer runs in 94% of his games. Papelbon in 95%. Again, it’s the multi-run affairs that hurt him. And they are as infrequent as they are ERA-damaging.

Because of FOUR percent of his innings, 70% of his ERA exists. It just so happens that those 4% have inflated his stats. Not just his ERA, but his WHIP, his BB/9, his H/9, etc. You tell me his WHIP is 1.53 post all-star break. I can turn around and tell you that his WHIP in TWO of his post-break appearances is infinite (the two Cleveland games) and in all others is 0.78. This doesn’t mean he’s “lucky” that his 1.53 WHIP hasn’t led to more runs…it means that a man with a small sample size has more work to do to wash out a particularly bad performance than anyone else. He has a propensity for really ugly single outings. Outings that cause us to lose and his stats to inflate. This in no way makes him ‘fortunate’ to have as few blown saves as he does. It means that, as a human being rather than a stat machine, Fuentes is generally a good pitcher who, if you choose to view stats, looks worse than he is. It means he, as a human being, tends to suffer from a loss of control or composure in isolated incidents that are particularly bad. His 4 hits and 2 walks in a single appearance one night don’t make him lucky on the other 10 when he gives up 2 or 3 combined hits and 2 or 3 combined walks. That’s how humans work differently than adding machines.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Sep 5, 2009 10:59 PM PDT up reply actions

LOL

I guess all relievers have an excuse for sucking.
There are more excuses for Fuentes, because statistically, he is horrible compared to his peers w/ more than 25 saves.
21 % of the time he appears, he gives up a run. And I’m including the little baby appearances scioscia uses to pad his closer’s ego.

12% of the time rivera appears, he gives up a run.
14% of the time papelbon appears, he gives up a run.
14% of the time nathan appears, he gives up a run.

Real cute using the 1 run or less % to compare him to papelbon and rivera, suggesting how unfair and statistically irrelevant a closer era is because it includes shitty outings.

Sometimes 1 run in an appearance is a shitty outing, especially if your team has a 1 run lead.

nice try dude.

His number suggest he sucks.
My opinion is that he does not suck, I think he has been fortunate. Bulger saved his ass, Rivera took away a homer, tori took away a homer, all 3 of those things saved him from a blown save. I’m obviously biased when I look at his numbers, because I remember those games, but even when comparing him to other above average relievers, his numbers suggest he should suck more than he does BS wise.

I guess I should just stop looking at the numbers when he blows a save or gives up a run, and focus on the good times.

As for questioning my math skills and all the theory surrounding man and robots, lol.

by Quinlan's Goofy Swing on Sep 5, 2009 11:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Christ

you want him to suck so badly, and the numbers just don’t support you. No one said he was Cy-fucking-Young. Hell, I even said he’s not even “great.”

I said he’s SOLID. And he has been. All you’ve proven in your little efforts to dig deep is that he doesn’t statistically match-up to the top 3 closers in the entire game, one of whom is 2nd all time in saves and is a lock for the hall of fame.

I guess I should just stop looking at the numbers when he blows a save or gives up a run, and focus on the good times.

If you don’t know how averages and sample sizes work, yes…I suggest you DO stop looking at numbers. Because clearly you don’t understand something so simple. A man whose ERA is 70% composed of 4% of his outings is, across his other 96% of outings, going to have his numbers heavily weighed down. What this means is that his AVERAGES look worse than night-to-night performance otherwise would be. It doesn’t make him lucky.

As I said, the 4 hits and 2 walks in one appearance against Cleveland don’t make him any more likely to give up hits or walks against a team on another night…it means that, as a human composed of nerves, impulses, mechanical flaws, and mental make-up, he has been exceptionally prone to an appearance that more cataclysmally impacts his ERA because of simple sample size.

I honestly don’t get how this is eluding you. You’re making my argument something it’s not and never was. ‘Solid’ doesn’t mean he’s Papelbon. It doesn’t mean he’s Rivera. It doesn’t mean he’s Joe fucking Nathan. It means he can be counted on to close out a game with little or no issue with as better frequency than most people counted on to close out games. And he has. His WHIP this year in 96% of his appearances is below 0.90, meaning 96% of the time you can count on him to allow fewer than one baserunner (given that he generally only pitches an inning when he comes out). How anyone can objectively look at that and say ‘that sucks’ is baffling. You’re spoiled as either a bandwagoner or someone who has been watching Percival or Frankie for too long. Either way, you COMPLETELY lack perspective on what 90% of the league can expect to get out of their closers on a given night, and instead dismiss anything not in the ELITE levels as ‘garbage.’ Do you have the SLIGHTEST clue what other teams closer situations look like?

Not to belabor the point

but on July 26th, Fuentes had a 2.78 ERA with a 1.12 WHIP.

Sparkling numbers indeed. He also had 93% of his opportunities to that point. You and every reasonable person on here or who watches baseball would nod their head and say “yes, Fuentes has had a very good season with the Angels…a solid addition to the club.” And anyone would be hard pressed to disagree with that evaluation.

On July 27th, that ERA was 3.79, and the WHIP was 1.29. Not fantastic numbers in the least. In fact, for a closer they’re pretty ‘meh,’ right?

But you and I would know better to call them ‘meh.’ Why? Because we both know the previous night he was having an outstanding season for the ballclub. Now he has one horrific outing, and he’s garbage?

Just like you wouldn’t say Kendry Morales isn’t having a shitty season for going 0-4 on back-to-back nights amidst an MVP season, you wouldn’t tell Fuentes he’s garbage because he had a colossally awful night. The only difference between the two is that you only get to see Fuentes when the game is close and on the line, and Fuentes doesn’t get the 600 at-bat equivalent sample size to readjust his stats when he fucks up.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Sep 6, 2009 12:16 AM PDT up reply actions

Keep relying on ad hominum attacks

They really improve your position.

96 % of the time his whip is below .90, yet 21 % of the time he gives up at least 1 run.

You made the comparison to Papelbon and Rivera with some weak strawman, don’t blame me for shitting on it.

If your definition of solid was half as thorough as your attacks on me I’d give it a second glance. Save your keyboard passive aggressive condescending shit for some other spoiled, uneducated, bandwagon, robot that’s or clueless about the 12 other relievers with better numbers than Fuentes. They must be solider.

I maintain his era, whip, baa, and blown saves are in the bottom of all relievers with at least 25 saves. There are 16.

He’s sucked since the all star break, no amount of personal attacks and fuck words will convince me otherwise.

Have a good night tough guy.

by Quinlan's Goofy Swing on Sep 6, 2009 12:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Look at the post you quoted

and point out the ad hominems to me. Please, go ahead. Because the closest I came at all was this:

If you don’t know how averages and sample sizes work, yes…I suggest you DO stop looking at numbers. Because clearly you don’t understand something so simple.

And that’s not an ad hominem so much as it is an honest inquiry based on the fact that you didn’t seem to be grasping the center of my argument. Nor does your above reply seem to suggest that you have YET gotten it. Did I otherwise swear in the piece? Hell yeah I did. But that’s not what an ad hominem is.

You continue to tell me his season averages…that his ERA sucks (it doesn’t “suck,” it’s just not great), that his WHIP sucks (ditto), etc. NONE of this addresses my point at all. Those numbers are superficial without context. And I keep providing that context and you keep ignoring it. If you want to ignore sample sizes, or disproportionate dispersal of runs across outings, or weighted averages, that’s your prerogative to do so. Some of us actually realize these things, however. And most of us realize that giving up 6 runners and 4 runs in one outing (with no outs recorded, mind you), after 10 or so outings without a run scoring (and actually, in Fuentes’ case specifically, it followed 2 straight months of SCORELESS baseball), is a good thing.

This is the same recycled garbage from people who push pythag. The people who will look at a team who wins 10 games by one run, and then loses 1 game by 10 runs and tells us that we should be a .500 team instead of a 10-1 team. It’s lazily glances at generalized averages rather than single-game breakdowns to look for patterns and reasons. And it’s a bullshit approach to anything.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Sep 6, 2009 12:35 AM PDT up reply actions

here you go:

“You’re spoiled as either a bandwagoner or someone who has been watching Percival or Frankie for too long. Either way, you COMPLETELY lack perspective on what 90% of the league can expect to get out of their closers on a given night, and instead dismiss anything not in the ELITE levels as ‘garbage.’ Do you have the SLIGHTEST clue what other teams closer situations look like?”

Dismiss the numbers and my point of view because I must be a new fan, or new to baseball, and have no idea what goes on outside of the Angels. You have no proof of any of these, so it isn’t a valid argument

You further go on to compare me to people who advocate pythag., call it a bullshit approach, as a way to say my numbers and approach too is bullshit. Again, not valid.

Belittling me doesn’t make what you say true, nor does it make what I say false. It just diverts the focus off what we are discussing, and you are attacking me instead.

Hope that clears it up.

by Quinlan's Goofy Swing on Sep 6, 2009 12:44 AM PDT up reply actions

I didn't dismiss your viewpoint on those grounds

I dismissed it for the thousands of other reasons I cited, and then gave a possible (and valid in the sense that it was a reasonable conclusion to draw) reason as to your lack of perception on the matter.

It’s not ad hominem to suggest that someone else might be ill-informed. I didn’t call you a bandwagoner…I suggested it as a possibility given what I perceive to be an extreme blind spot on a given position. It’s not ad hominem to legitimately question someone’s knowledge of a sport when you feel they have taken a position that reflects a lack of that knowledge.

To pretend that this was all some mudslinging pissing-contest, when about 95% of my post was statistical analysis, and about 5% conjecture as to what I perceive as your ignorance on the matter, is ridiculous.

And your accusation of ad hominem attacks came before my pythag post, so just toss that shit out entirely. Nevermind that it is a perfectly logical and analogous extrapolation.

i don't see anything wrong with that

i’ve made comments like that before. it’s not being disrespectful to #34, just saying that he’s there for us in the field. you know, the whole angels in the outfield theme..

Yeah, except you're a fan of the team in question

not someone derisively mocking the performance from the other side.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Sep 5, 2009 7:49 PM PDT up reply actions

put it this way

they have had more offensive posts about that subject over there and to their credit, many memebrs have called them out when things went over the line.

I'm not one to give credit to someone for a bad comment

merely because it wasn’t the worst one.

Sorry man, I’m bitter.

Actually kinda tame compared to what I've seen on other sites.

As long as no one brings it in here, I ignore it. More karma for us.

the ending

wow cant believe how close and even deadon in spots my prediction was: i predicted at least 5 hits against greinke at least 1 steal and a 3-1 lead since it would be a low scoring game. so close and glad the result was a win!!!!

I've said all along

Lackey should to be our top priority. We can afford him might as well keep him. Abreu and Figgins come 2nd an 3rd.

First we had a Salmon and now we have a Trout, let's see the same results.

36 next season

which means he’ll really be 37-38, and Mr. Consistent is currently in a late season funk. not good. Juan Rivera and Brandon Wood anyone?

If he wants AJ Burnett money, forget it

He’s better than Burnett, but no pitcher over 30 deserves five years and $80+ million. Let the Yankees overpay for veteran pitchers.

by Suboptimal on Sep 5, 2009 8:48 PM PDT up reply actions

he's like the only good SP available

on the free market.

someone will overpay.

127 in eleven innings

the staff was very conservative today. John Butcher is getting things organized for the long haul to the play offs. Now only if somebody could wake up Mickey and have him return the bats full of hits that he hid from the team.

i think it was a jab at

ESPN.. several of the broadcasts have had announcers refer to butcher at “john” butcher..

Just so long as it all clicks come October...

And pitching’s more important then anyway, right?
