All-Time 9s
Saw this survey on mlb.com, and thought it would be cool if people posted their picks/reasons/arguments in this thread.
C- Molina 2005. While the other guys may have had better offensive seasons, Molina gets my vote because he was so strong behind the dish.
1B- Joyner 1987. It surprised me how close I came to picking Morales though.
2B- Grich 1979. This one isn't even close.
SS- Fregosi 1970. Eckstein 2002 will always hold a special place in my heart, but Fregosi gets the nod here.
3B- Glaus 2000. This one also wasn't even close.
DH- Chili Davis 1994. If Davis gets a full season, he puts up better numbers than Downing and Robinson. I know Downing is the sentimental favorite though.
OF- Erstad 2000.
OF- Guerrero 2004.
OF- Salmon 1995.
OF was HARD. I ended up having to leave Baylor 79 off the list. Erstad 2000 seemed necessary because we needed a CF and someone who can hit leadoff. And Vlad 2004 was amazing. I suppose given my druthers I might have gone Salmon 98 at DH, Baylor 79 in the OF, but that wasn't an option.
Anyway, those are my thoughts. How about the rest of you?

Wasn't Baylor
a DH in ‘79? He’s always listed that way in almanacs and such.
If not, I’d take Downing over Davis. Can’t ignore those OBP, run totals.

Davis' OBP in 1994 was .410, as opposed to Downing's .400 in 1987.
The only reason Davis lacks the run totals was the strike-shortened season. Baylor in 1979 started 78 games in LF, 19 in RF, and 65 at DH.

Not bad
It is a toss up with me at Catcher though. I was always partial to Bob Boone and his years behind the plate were also very solid. He could shut down a running game. Either Molina or Boone works but I will go with Boone.
As for the CF thing I might just have to use Garrett Anderson. After all GA played 440 games in CF while an often injured Erstad was used at 1B playing 446 in CF and only 30 games in CF in 2000.
Other then that maybe the DH spot but both Davis and Baylor along with Downing are very solid choices.

Ohhh
As for the problem with the lead off hitter situation you speak of I think Fergosi could be moved from that 2 spot he use to hit in to the lead off spot.

Again I based my choices on the mlb.com survey linked above.
The only problem I would have with Fregosi batting leadoff is that in the 1970 season Fregosi had zero steals. I prefer my leadoff men with some wheels.

My list
C) Downing, ‘79. Hit .326 as a catcher for an offensive juggernaut and first-ever division-winner.
1B) Don Mincher, ’67. In a dead ball era, finished top 10 in Batting Average, On Base Percentage, Slugging Percentage, Runs, Homers, and RBIs, for starters.
2B) Grich, ’81. First 2Bman to lead his league in HRs and Slugging since Rogers freaking Hornsby.
SS) Fregosi, ’70. Agreed.
3B) DeCinces, ’82. Glaus’ 2000 was in the AL’s second-best offensive season since 1936. DeCinces was the best hitter on a great offensive team that made the playoffs.
LF) Erstad, 2000. Agreed.
CF) Albie Pearson, ‘63. Though Torii was making a run at it before he got hurt.
RF) Salmon, ’95. Agreed.
DH) Baylor, ’79. Even if he actually didn’t DH enough to qualify.

I was also surprised they went with Downing '87 at DH over '79 at catcher.
My guess is that they just chose career high OPS for each guy, though OPS+ shows ‘79 was superior. I guess maybe on a full roster we keep B-Mo as a defensive replacement though. Downing’s defense at C was pretty so-so.

Grinch's year was huge
…I never got to see him play but judging from his stats he was inexplicably streaky year to year with the angels. ’81 is weird though because he only played 100 games which undoubtedly helped his batting average and yet he still smacked 21 homeruns…second highest in his career.
wish i could’ve seen him play…

He changed his batting stance/style constantly
Some years he was just driving homers to right-center, other years he was yanking doubles the third base line. Would crouch one year (or month, or week), stand up straight the next. Hands up, hand down.
‘81 didn’t help *anyone*’s batting average, or power, because the chopped out the warm summer months. In fact it was one of the most anemic offensive seasons of the past 40 years. 1979 was the only year Grich matched up a good year with a good league-wide offensive year, which is how he topped 30 HRs & 100 RBIs for the only time in his career.

Pretty much had the same as Zu Long
But I picked Morales and OC, those were really close. By the time the year is through, I firmly believe that the 2009 Morales will go down as having the best season for a Angels 1B. I’m optimistic that the 2010 version will be even better.

Yeah, they should have had a relievers section.
I think Donnelly ’03 makes my reliever list though.
