Is he hurt? Bad hammy acting up?
Odd that he sits so much.

This is the only thing I can think of
That Howie is banged up and can’t go. Otherwise it makes no sense to sit him every night when he was playing so well.
Ouch. Not sure that was a strike.

Jepsen is the future of our bullpen
The question is whether he should be the present as well.
I still think Dondo will be a future very good pen guy.

Exactly. Even this year Dondo still has an excellent K/9 ratio.
Plus he has a sprained ulnar nerve earlier this season.

Oh, he's still got great potential
But he needs to get back to where he was last year and regain that consistency. This year it’s been painful to watch him.
I agree with the Optimist
Dondo still has a future in the bullpen, perhaps as the next Shields. But Jepsen’s stuff is even better than Dondo’s.
All that said, your point is acknowledged.
Not only did Jepsen play in the Olympics, if memory serves he never gave up a run.

Fuentes? He’s 5th in both metrics.

umpire took one off the arm or shoulder maybe
he then picked up the ball and basically chucked it at the ball boy.
not aiming at him, but of the clemens throwing piazza’s broken bat variety.
he also was yelling something

I don't think it was stupid
You have a 4-run lead and a chance to a) restore some confidence to a young pitcher and b) give Fuentes the night off after a very rough outing last night. The fact that it did not work out does not make it stupid.
UGH
This makes me sad. I was hoping Bell could build up some confidence.

Dear Brian,
Please give up less than 4 runs. I came here to make this post. I will vote Fuentes for Panther if you give up none of your own runs. I know you want a panther vote. So be good.
Sincerely and with hope,

I'll take a RAWR any day. Seriously, his numbers over the season have been very good.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
OK, except for the fact that Jepsen is a better pitcher. Other than that I agree with you
Don't call me Desmond!
Oh, I think Jepsen is the bomb. Remember when he wasn't?
That’s the problem, our short little memories as fans.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
Yes but Jepsen is 25
And he throws 98 mph. I was willing to be patient with him early in the season, and what we have seen post-All Star break is simply phenomenal.
Not everyone was so patient. I remember a whole lot of people screaming
that he and Bulger were terrible.
THIS… IS… ANAHEIM!!
Sure, but it's still small sample size.
And closing is a mentality. Shields was a great set-up man, but wasn’t a closer-type and knew it. Whether Jepsen has the mental fortitude to take the reigns at the back end is an important decision which probably shouldn’t be made as a snap judgement in the heat of the playoff race.
~Till the Halo burns out...
Good point
And if Fuentes holds up, it won’t be. But if Jepsen continues on like this, he deserves a shot to close next season. And if not next season, I would think once Fuentes’s contract is up at the end of 2010.
Oh yes I remember when Jepsen struggled in his first few major league outings
But since then he has been lights out, showing the command and fire of a committed closer. I don’t think we need to look for a closer anymore.
Don't call me Desmond!

First few?
Lets be honest. He was beyond god-awful for nearly two solid months.
~Till the Halo burns out...
He is, but eh. K-Rod was better than Percival in 2004.
Having the best pitcher on the team be the setup man isn’t always horrible.
~Till the Halo burns out...
Extremely well said Zu
K-Rod was better than Percy in 2004, and we hung in with the veteran. Where’d that get us?
Don't call me Desmond!
by highlandhalo on Sep 9, 2009 10:02 PM PDT up reply actions
To the playoffs, where we lost due to reasons completely unrelated to Troy Percival.
~Till the Halo burns out...
I agree with you
I do think Jepsen is the more dominant pitcher though, and deserves serious consideration to be our closer in the very very near future.
