REVELATIONS
Well, I have to say this season has been a season of surprises for me. We have gotten the predictable production out of Vlad Guerrero and Torii Hunter (despite injuries), Juan Rivera, Chone Figgins and the catchers. But 3 things have really opened my eyes this seaason.
1) Erick Aybar: I was never a believer until I saw this kid play SS for a full season. Not only does he make all the routine plays, he makes the spectacular ones too, and plays Angels baseball the way the Soth wants him to. Revelation. This guy plays such a beautiful shortstop I hope we never have another one.
2) Kendry Morales: OK, I've already written an open letter of apology to acuda to say that I didn't think this guy was gonna be this good. But he has been way better than advertised. He's already got 30 bombs and 95 RBI. OK, he could whiff a little less, but it's awfully hard to argue with a .583 slugging percentage.
3) Jered Weaver: I always thought he was a soft-tossing version of his older brother, but how has he broken out this year? Perhaps it took the tragic death of his good friend Nick Adenhart for Jered to grow up, but you can't argue with the numbers. (15-5, 3.76 ERA much better than Chuck Finley ever did). So go Jered! Keep No .34 on all year.
Sit for now see you soon highland xx

I was hoping for a little more from Vlad this season, but the injuries sort of did him in.
The hitting in general from all players this year was my biggest and happiest surprise.

brandon wood?
are we going to use woody at all? i think the guy just needs regular playing time, a la kendry morales. i like aybar, but i think that defensively, figgins can be just as good at ss (as he is a natural middle infielder anyway, despite his utility man status), and that wood should be the starter at 3rd next year. defensively, i think that will still be pretty top notch.

um..
aybar is one of the best defensive shortstops in the MLB at the moment.. while i’m not saying figgy couldn’t play serviceable defense at SS, in fact i think he’d be prettty decent, but there’s no way he displaces aybar from the positions.. 2B is much more likely..

I thought this was a study of the book of Revelations:
The Red Horse — A precursor of War …
The second horseman as depicted in a thirteenth-century Apocalypse manuscript: When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come!” Then another horse came out, a fiery red one dressed in Angel gear. Its rider was given power to take peace from the AL West and to make the Halos slay the Rangers. To him was given a huge bat.

I love this team.

And behold!
It did come to pass that the Sailors did come unto the place of the Seraphim, even under the shadow of the mighty Alpha.
And yea, though the King did sore try the Seraphim, were the Seraphim victorious, ee’n though the mighty lizard did fail.
And on the next night did the Clothmaker and the Bellringer lead the Seraphim unto victory!

verily
When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” 8I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named howd, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine, plague, bandwagonning, pink hats and drunken obnoxiousness, and by the wild beasts of the earth.

As it is said
And shall then the CHOWD plague the earth until the Seraphim do meet them in battle and vanquish them.
And all the hosts were sore afraid when the tale was told, for the CHOWD did have unto itself a mighty herald. And that herald did proclaim the glory of the CHOWD and of the Evil Ones.

Chone
Predictable performance from Chone? He has gone from Angel disposal bin to “I dare not dis Chone.” A bit of an exaggeration, maybe. Did u have him hitting plus .300 with a plus .400 OBP? Gold glove candidate? Few did.
Aybar and Morales? Wow.
Add Bobby, the resurgence of the Angels starting pitching staff, the maturation of Jepsen and Bulger, and a new twist or wrinkle in the final 3 weeks: then I might START to agree with you.
Angel Pitching, Angel Defense - get past that.

Agree about Aybar
I always thought he was nothing better than a utility guy being used too much. But man he is a wizard at SS. I love watching him play now and am fully sold. I wouldn’t mind him manning short for years to come now.

I'm willing to admit
I was wrong about Aybar. He doesn’t, in fact, suck.
mostly.

Re: Aybar
…and nevermind that he has more than held his own as a hitter, too.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on Sep 10, 2009 8:53 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Actually, let us emphasize his hitting.
I have been a large Aybar critic in years past. His defensive skills were incredibly raw and unschooled. His foot work was all wrong, and he used his speed to and arm strength to compensate for his lack of instinct and lack of positioning (both before a ball was put into play and where he put himself to make a play). Also, his cannon arm was not under complete control. Meanwhile, he brought nothing to the offense that the team did not already have in quantity. Including horrid bunting.
Wrong. Shortsightededly wrong. This kid has completely smoothed out his defensive liabilities and become a HUGE asset at SS. Not just for the Halos but for baseball (he needs to get intot he WS at this level of play so that all baseball fans can enjoy). I don’t know whether it was maturity, repetitions, confidence, or a buttload of education at the feet of Tony Phillips. Perhaps all of the above. But I would NEVER consider moving Aybar out of that SS spot now in favor of ANYONE in this organization. Aybar can own that slot for the next 8 years.
BUT…what Aybar brings to the plate on offense has been nothing short of miraculous!!! Forget stats for a moment. I am sure that we could pull them up all day in praise of Aybar with the bat. Think about this: when Aybar comes to bat now, isn’t your default thinking one of something positive and exciting about to happen? How many other players create that level of confidence in his potential with each at-bat? And this is only 2009! His career arc is climbing dramatically! Right now, any cap that we might put on his offensive ability might be little more than a repeat of past mistakes. And being able to type that line, from a guy who saw nothing but trouble in this player, is not hard at all. It is a joy to have been this wrong.

Aybar
I always thought Aybar was a poor man’s Rafael Furcal, but what did I know compared to other ‘experts’ who thought he had no business playing shortstop at the Major League level.
The biggest thing with Aybar is the confidence he has shown on defense. I don’t know if this was the case all along or something clicked during the season, but he isn’t afraid to make a mistake anymore.
He is aggressive getting to the ball and there is no more fear in his eyes.
At the plate, he seems like a guy who can work a pitcher or still a guy that can get himself out on the first three pitches.
With the offensive numbers he is putting up, I have no reason to complain.
I think Failbar is dead.
Or is Kendry perhaps the one who needs to sit?
