Technology

Torii touches upon the use of technology to improve his game, specifically advanced video technology that allows them to break down their own swing, pitchers, and the like. Nobody seems to have a problem with this, and one never hears an argument that statistical records achieved by players today are in any way inferior to those achieved by players in past generations who did not have these tools available to them. Yet the moment a player uses advanced pharmaceutical technology to improve himself, he gets lambasted and branded as a cheater.

What’s the difference?

JJACK brings upa good point

It always comes back to this for me: If there is not something beyond mere stigma in JUICING, why didn’t someone just come out and say “This shit is great, everyone should be doing it.” The shame is in the jock pretending that it is the jock alone doing it.

Torii watching video = going to law school, passing the bar.
Big Mac doing roids = being appointed judge by your father-in-law the congressman with no experience and lecturing everyone on moral righteousness from your bench.

Oh

I have plenty of humor. Do you actually have something useful to contribute? What about my question do you find to be “lol” and “wow”?

Imperfect analogy

I may be nitpicking, but there are still basic qualifications to get to be a judge, for example (member of the bar for 10 years), no matter who’s doing the appointing. But I see where you’re going.

I would respond by pointing out that shooting up alone isn’t enough. There’s still the hours of batting practice. The years of training. And, you know, actually being able to catch up to that 95 mph heater or lay off that slider. Nobody has yet invented a pill that can give you those abilities in the first place.

I'm not sure if you were being sarcastic...

But the difference (for me, anyway) is that video is not physically changing you. You have to make the adjustment. It’s not just gonna pump up your guns while you lay back and watch tv…

So what?

The question was somewhat rhetorical, but it was intended to elicit discussion? Why are chemicals bad?

OK. What if it were determined that eating a certain food: let’s say, hot fudge, would make you stronger really fast. But it still has the dangerous side effects associated with over-consuming hot fudge. Would you support a rule that prohibits hot fudge for ballplayers?

How about advanced, innovative exercise equipment? You still have to work out, but you get a much more efficient work-out than doing it the old-fashioned way that they did back in the good ol’ days of pumping iron or backbreaking farm work, thanks to science?

by jjackflash on Jan 12, 2010 11:56 PM PST up reply actions

Serious question? It's enhanced physical skills versus enhanced mental skills.

By “advanced pharmaceutical technology” I assume you mean the latest in anabolic steroids. Have you seen what it does to the bodies of those than inject/ingest the latest pharmaceuticals, especially after the quit taking them? From Lyle Alzado to Barry Bonds to Mark McGwire, it’s not a pretty picture.
On the other hand, the use of technology (those you mentioned above) use mental skills to improve performance (review video looking for potential advantages/weaknesses, apply what was learned to improve performance).

The difference is enormous, and explains why most of us have no problem with what Torii is learningi/mplementing, versus how most believe McGwire and his peers were cheating.

Reader's Digest version...

Pretend you have a son or daughter. Would you rather have them watching slow motion video review of their (and opponents) performance or have them taking advantage of the latest advance pharmaceutical technology?

Strawman

What I would want for my child (or even myself) is irrelevant, and should be, as to the choices made by other humans with free will.

They’re grownups. Let them make grownup choices.

Mind you, when it comes right down to it, the only legitimate argument against PEDs from my perspective is the Morton’s Fork faced by other competing ballplayers of of choosing between using potentially harmful PEDs or losing one’s job/getting paid less) than the guy who is less scrupulous.

by jjackflash on Jan 13, 2010 12:02 AM PST up reply actions

Strawman?

A strawman has 2 elements;
1) The posing of a false argument, unrelated or only tangentially related to the initial question/argument.
2) The destruction of that false argument.

My comment above had neither. Your charge of a strawman is false.

I answered your question with a completely relevant question intended to assist you in answering your own question. Picture sitting with a loved one (son, daughter, friend) comtemplating a choice of A) watching slo-mo video replay to enhance their performance or B) ingesting anabolic steroids to enhance their performance. Recalling your original question – “What’s the difference?” – would you still truly see no difference between these 2 choices? If asked, would your counseling truly be reduced to the flip of a coin?

And please…this isn’t a question of whether or not they are grown-ups or their free will. Those are questions separate (though worthy of additional discussion) from your original “What’s the difference?”.

by sothball on Jan 13, 2010 8:07 AM PST up reply actions

So what?

I’ve seen what it does to them. They’re adults with free will, who made choices (by the way, it has never been demonstrated that steroids killed Alzado; it was simply his personal belief). The long-term consequences to Bonds, McGwire and the rest of them has yet to be determined. But who are we to complain about the choices they made, which made them untold millions of dollars and provided a lot of people with a lot of entertainment?

by jjackflash on Jan 12, 2010 11:58 PM PST up reply actions

This is an argument to legalize the use of PED's/steroids...

…and is a different question from your original “What’s the difference?”.

In regard to Alzado, I didn’t say steroids killed him. I used him as an example (like Bonds and McGwire) of how they affect one’s body, particularly after suspension of their use.

In regard to not complaining about choices they made there are 2 thoughts;
1) They either lied about their use (like McGwire) or still have not admitted their use (like Bonds). It’s rather difficult to not complain about their choices when they can’t be honest about the choices they have made.
2) If you only 2 criteria for what’s acceptable in sports/entertainment are A) making a lot of money for the participant and B) providing a lot of people with a lot of entertainment, then you need to accept a potentially radical departure from what constitutes sports/entertainment. Roman gladiators anyone?

The New Yorker

Let’s leave the world of sports for a moment, and consider the increasing use of PEDs in the academic and professional (business) world. This actually hits home a bit. Consider the consequences of lawyers, accountants, whomever, who feel the need to use PEDs to bill more hours and work more efficiently. Soon, the pressure is on the older senior associate to keep up.

But if there is an irreversible trend in society to use PEDs, there will come a time when using them is not considered “bad.” In fact, it could become desirable, even expected. Once that happens, it’s hard to see how they won’t be accepted in the sporting world. It certainly won’t be considered “cheating.”

All kidding aside, this to me is what gives me qualms about PEDs. Otherwise, it all boils down to authorities trying to control people’s lives in a way they really have no business doing.

I’m not making this up about non-athletic PEDs, incidentally. I would strongly encourage anyone reading this thread to read the article below, from the New Yorker.

That was Bill James' argument regarding steroids.

He thinks in the future everyone will be taking them to improve their health, live longer, etc. and thinks eventually all the hubbub about steroid use in baseball will die down. Here’s what he wrote (PDF).

I think you’re right about being able to hit in the first place, steroids don’t make you a better contact hitter with more power. From what I understand, besides the boast in power, steroids allow a player to recover much more quickly with less fatigue following a game or workout. In other words, they can play at the higher levels of their game for a longer sustained period than a non-steroid user can. Think about how many games Mickey Mantle wouldn’t have missed if he had access to steroids (and used them).

I don’t mean to go to far into the steroids crap, especially in a Torii Hunter video thread, but I’m surprised there’s not more being said about ’roided up pitchers. I think they have a bigger advantage while on juice than a hitter. Just off the top of my head I can count 7 or 8 hitters that have been lambasted, but the only pitcher that stands out is Clemens.
