What's Your Favorite GMJ Moment?
Oh there are so many. Mine was that time he got traded to the New York Mets. Remember that? Classic.
I know a lot of you are gonna talk about that game where he went 1-4 with a stand-up double in a meaningless October match-up against the A's, and that was really memorable, granted. And, hey, I creamed over his running catch against the Royals' Desi Relaford in the June 2007 as much as the next guy. But I really think it's the trade.

One of these two
The steal of home in Arizona.
Or the time he hit a totally unnecessary grand slam when we were already winning by like 6 runs. It was against the Twins back in ’07 I think.

His First HR as an Angel
We were getting our asses kicked late in a game and he crushed a fastball (might have been off of Zumaya, don’t kill me if I am wrong you rotosheet tillers) to right field, near the spot of Spiezio’s most memorable dinger.
At that moment I knew we were fucked – I had already given up on him the minute we signed him, but the anti-clutchness of his HR on a cantaloupe sized fat fastball challenge pitch from a save collecting heat-meiser… it sunk in how albatross this whole thing was…

regarding the HGH situation before opening day and then he didn’t do it.
Openly defying the owner of the team after he just gave you 50 million dollars.

When Stoneman retired
solely due to this incomprehensible contract.
by shiftyeyedgoat on Jan 22, 2010 3:40 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
He had some amazing graceful leaping way-over-the-wall-to-snag-a-sure-HR catches
but more late-to-react stumbling buffoonish outfield gaffs with the ball rolling by his prostrate body to the wall
(BTW,GMPM, that was one of the funniest opening 3 lines of Halosphere history…killer)
by Raaddad on Jan 22, 2010 3:54 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Yep
I remember a shellacking we placed on the Red Sox in August of 2007 in which GMJ both gaveth and tooketh away—made a leaping grab over the wall and a couple of innings later smashed a solo shot over right center. This was also the year he was the only guy in the Angels clubhouse to actually say hello and speak to a couple of my buddies who were touring all 30 stadiums to raise money for leukemia and lymphoma awareness. Could be overstated, but that’s how I remember it in any event. It was all downhill for GMJ from there…I still really, really, really want to like the guy, and I just can’t hate him…but in the end, with hindsight, he was pretty terrible.
RIP Nick Adenhart.

The first and only game Mrs. Sothball and I have ever seen at Fenway Park. GMJ’s first season. Linkie.
Carrasco is an emergency started for Escobar. He’s laboring, but getting by. In the 3rd inning with bases loaded, Varitek hits a bullet to CF. GMJ takes a few steps in, gets a bead and…has the ball clunk right off of his glove. I mean, it hit right in his mit, then fell straight down. This was a play routinely made by anyone playing high school or above.
For a little icing on the cake, he made a throwing error later in the game. And he was 0-4 at the plate. I came away thinking that his defense was vastly over-rated, his offense was questionable, and Stoneman got jobbed.

The way he runs like a badass mofo from the 70s.
He should have just rocked an enormous ass Fro with pick and all just to solidify it.

When he hit a routine groundout and didn't bother to run it out
except the shortstop (I forget the team, forgive me) booted it, meaning he could very well have been safe on an error. I can hear Rory “…and he stopped running!”
Although he did hit a 2 run shot off of Jonathan Broxton. It meant nothing because we still lost by 2 but I just hate the Dodgers so much I had to include this.
I miss Hudler already.

Eh, dumping on GMJ because of a bogus contract
100% class act and a genuinely good human being.

I wouldn't say 100% class act.
I wasn’t impressed by him saying that he wants to be traded. It’s not the FO’s fault that he couldn’t crack the starting position. I thought it was a chickenshit thing to say.
Still, we are probably dumping on him because of the contract. If he made only 3 million dollars, Angels fans would have made nearly as much noise.
I miss Hudler already.
by Teixeira Who? on Jan 22, 2010 4:39 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Probably should dump on the certain someone who gave him that contract?
I think its pretty much the opposite of chickenshit when he voiced his opinion about playing time. At least the dude has confidence in himself and wanted to contribute.. albeit, he did suck, except for some impressive clutch performances in the post season… off the bench, which is the hardest to do.
I like gary. But im good with him off the team… probably the best situation for both player and team, even though we did get a shitty reliever and paid almost all of GMJ’s contract.
What do you need a fancy suit for, Charlie, you ain't got no job to wear it to.

When John Lackey said in his very first game
“That’s why we got him!” after he made a pretty good catch out in center.
There were a ton of really clutch pinch-hit appearances this year too. The most memorable one was against Joe Nathan after Kendrick’s miracle single off the second base bag that kept the inning alive.

I liked Gary
It’s just too bad he was paid as an all-star with a reserve’s skill set.
One of my favorite Matthews Memories was the game in 08 against the Yankees when Torii and Pudge began pushing and shoving. Who the the first guy out of the dugout to get Torii’s back? None other than Sir Gary Matthews Jr.

You know what?
It wasn’t his fault somebody decided to pay him FIFTY MILLION DOLLARS.
He wasn’t great, far from it, but I don’t have any animosity for him whatsoever. There are many arseholes in baseball, but he never gave any indication of being one of them.
Sorry it didn’t work out Gary, best of luck to you.

How about the time...
that he dropped a can-of-corn fly ball that allowed two runs to score and led to a late inning collapse/loss against the Yankees in New York (and he didn’t even have the decency to look upset about it).
or, when he lost a ball in the lights in a huge playoff game vs. Boston . He didn’t so much as take a step in the right direction until the ball was against the wall on that one…
or, the numerous other times he dropped lazy fly balls that should have been easy outs.
It is really hard to pick just one moment with GMJ. There were so many great ones.

and I only remember it happening like 20 times or so.

Favorite GMJ Moment
When I was in chilly Chicago on business this week and heard that the moping, ingrate had been traded to NY. The guy who pulled off the biggest heist since the Brink’s Job will get eaten alive by the NY Media. Good Luck and enjoy your ill-gotten gains
by topspinrob on Jan 24, 2010 2:18 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
The only good thing for the Mets
is that at least the NY media can’t get too upset with the amount they are paying GMJ, since the Angels are paying most of the remaining contract. So basically, at a little over a million a year, the Mets are only paying him twice as much as he is worth. Okay, three times as much.
