GMJ By The Numbers
Well, Ok. Close the books on this deal. All that is left is to pray that something miraculous does not happen with the Mets, and we end up watching GMJ win the WS with a walk-off grand slam off of Fuentes and secure the WS MVP. Not that I am gonna lose any sleep over that.
But what is GMJ's legacy as a Halo? Sure, there's some stuff on the field. A few good plays and a few good hits. And a metric ton or two of epic fail. How does that all add up against the albatross that was, and is, his contract? Here is how the $46.5 million that the Halos will end up paying 'Sarge Junior' per line item detail. Pick your favorite stat and see what he cost Arte:
ON OFFENSE:
$32,585.84 per plate appearance
$36,671.92 per at bat
$96,473.03 per base
$149,038.46 per hit
$169,708.03 per strikeout
$262,711.86 per run scored
$276,785.71 per run batted in
$329,787.23 for every walk
$726,562.50 per double
$5,812,500 per triple
$1,550,000 per home run
$1,550,000 per stolen base
$1,660,714.29 for every Ground Into Double Play
$4,650,000 for every time he struck fear in the hearts of the opposition and drew an intentional base on balls
$4,650,000 for every sacrifice fly
$5,812,500 for every time he was caught stealing
$5,812,714.29 for every time he was hit by a pitch
AND ON DEFENSE:
$8,425.44 per inning played
$29,580.15 for every defensive chance
$30,794.70 per put out
$75,487.01 for every game he started in the field
$1,453,125 for every error committed
$1,550,000 per assist
and...
$11,625,000 per double play.
AND, THE BEST OF ALL:
$381,147.50 for every game, regular season and post-season, that he sat on the bench!
Thanks forty-six and a half million, Gary. Good luck finding playing time in New York after the All-Star break!!

I actually have no dislike for GMJ the person,
But what a terrible, terrible contract.
YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER OF THE DARKSIDE.....
You have to admit
thats an excellent contract from the point of view of GMJ. I’d love to get that kind of money for that kind of production.
Driven into right-center field, Erstad says he has it...the Angels, world champions!
Did we close the books on him because we REALLY wanted to clear space
or because HE wanted to leave? I wish I was a fly on the wall.
It's Always Somethin'
Who the hell intentionally walked him?
Who were they trying to get to???

So he made less
on the cost per error than he did for for the fabled GIDP, and I thought we picked him up for his defensive prowlness.
Angels fans will remember GMJ every time they pay for something at the “Big A”. Glorify him by chanting his initials out loud, whenever you hear the bells ring “CHA-CHING !!!”
I have no bad feelings toward GMJ
He was exactly who we all thought he was – a good 4th outfielder deserving of 4th outfielder type money. I blame Stoneman for this. This was his brilliant move. And it’s not like he was an amazing player that went south after signing this contract. Everyone questioned and laughed at this deal the moment it happened. What the hell was Stoneman thinking?
OK, I'm finally over losing Tex. Thanks Kendry.

That he really wanted to tie the financial hands of his replacement?
Make sure Reagins HAD to look better by comparison? Maybe it’s an error to presume Stoneman was thinking…
If you remember
Renown genius Brian Sabean also offered GMJ 5/50 to come play for the Giants. The demand for GMJ was serious. 2006 was a crazy season anyways, with ridiculous contracts going to Vernon Wells, Alfonso Soriano, and Barry Zito. While I don’t blame Stoneman for the state of the market at that time, I can blame him for not at least sniffing out a financial disaster.
My memory (crap though it is)
is that we went after GMJ after we lost out on Soriano and we were making noise that we were interested in Wells. Also remember that we lost out on Konerko the year before.
All in all, the GMJ contract didn’t stink nearly as bad as those and he seemed like a decent guy. Be grateful people, it could’ve been much worse.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Once again
I don’t entirely blame Stoneman. Scioscia was quoted as saying that he thought “Matthews had figured it out.” I’m certain our skipper played a role in that signing, too. And lastly, Arte ultimately had to say, “Where do I sign?” Everyone was to blame for this one….
