In this particular poll

there is no wrong answer. I flipped back and forth four times

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.

While “the catch” is the most exciting call, “just another halo victory” is Rory’s signature and it is one that I will miss. I know many people in here would type that in a post as the Angels would win a game.

Rory is going to be missed in a big way by the Angels family.

Thats the one I rolled with.

“Just another Halo victory” is synonymous, at least for me, with Rory. Another lost member of our Halo family…god this sucks.

Kind of a toss-up

It’s like 2 different genres: best line to end a season, and best recurring line, or something.

Yeah, I can't choose one.

Rest in peace, Rory. When I think of some of the greatest moments my Angels fandom, I hear your voice describing them. Thanks for everything you gave us.

Pretty much can't choose one...

The World Series is obviously memorable (honestly that was such a classy call), but so is the latter which we’ve all heard 90+ times a year recently. SO saddening.

I really like Phys' interview.

Since he was around him almost constantly on the road and near him in the booth he had so much more insight into Rory as a person. Sosh knew him as well, but not on the same level. The interview with Phys brought a tear to my eye.

Nick would be proud.

Agreed

I listened to it on my way home from work. Really touching stuff. Terry Smith really brought it home as well.

I miss Hudler already.

My favorite Rory line

In 2002, on the radio feed after Fox cut away from the end of game five between the Angels and Twins:

“Somewhere up above, Gene Autry just put his arm around Donnie Moore and said ’C’mon, Donnie. We’re going to the World Series”.

This is Sad

Rory was so underappreciated by Angel fans and MLB. He was well on his way to being one of the premier play-by-play guys in MLB. He was easy to listen to and just seemed like a great, humble guy.

I’m truly going to miss Rory call Angel games, and quite frankly nobody in the last 15 years comes close to his talent of communicating the beauty of baseball to the fan via radio or TV.

My best to his family and close friends.

easy for me

“Just Another Halo Victory”

Maybe because I was at game 7 and I didn’t hear “Erstad…makes the catch” live has something to do with my decision. I have heard the replay many many times (brings a warm spark to my heart each and every time and probably even more so after today), but I think hearing it live has a certain mystic to it rather than just hearing the replay.

Either way both hold a mainstay in my soul.

thank you so much for posting these.

They were very touching. Rory’s call of Vlad’s single up in the middle in the 9th inning of Game 3 against Boston brought goosebumps and chills to me. Goodness.

My personal favorite from Rory:

“And it’s BELTED, left field, in the gap, it’s in there for a double! Here comes Figgins! Here comes Anderson! The Angels TAKE THE LEAD, 6-5!”

Rory

That call in game 6 of THE SEASON putting the Halos ahead was my favorite baseball call of all time!!! For you, Rory – “just another Halo hero” Tell Mr. Autry, Lymon Bostock, Nick, Donnie and the rest of the gang up in booth we still love them…

I've gotta wonder...

Why has no one called Rex for a comment? Surely he’d want to say something about his former colleague.

I will miss Rory

I loved listening to Terry, Rory and Phys on the radio and on TV. They were by far the best announcing trio in baseball, if not sports, but that is just my opinion. I remember listening to Rory on 710 AM in my really early Angels fan days, and he always made the game come alive for me.

RIP Rory
