Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

I knew this was pretty much inevitable. I still hold some hope that he goes somewhere other than Texas

So, Figgins & Kotchman to Seattle, Oliver & Vlad to Texas, D-Mac to Oakland?

I must be missing a couple of others. In addition to the whole Seattle coaching staff burbling up from Angeldom….

This is exactly what I was afraid of in not offering Vlad a contract.

I think Vlad on the Rangers kicks a lot of ass next year. Still, I also hope he manages to sign elsewhere.

Rest in peace, Rory. When I think of some of the greatest moments my Angels fandom, I hear your voice describing them. Thanks for everything you gave us.

Don’t worry, right after he said this he went and kicked the shit out of the rest of the galaxy for over 20 straight years, so we’re in good shape.

I really wish these snakes were your arms.

Just saw that

He probably wants more than 1 year

by Epic Dean on Jan 7, 2010 1:37 PM PST up reply actions

That is probably why we signed Matsui instead of Vlad

I don’t think Vladdy has realistic expectations for his next contract and as a result has generated little interest during the off-season.

by blochead on Jan 8, 2010 1:56 PM PST up reply actions

Vlad not happy but who is going to offer him more??

Texas just set the bar of Vlad’s price. I dont think anyone is going to go over that price. The only possibility I can really see is someone adding an option to pick up a second year into the contract…which, texas would probably do anyways.

Vlad just got more pissed…

I wonder if he's going to wind up back with us on the bench

Isn’t there a certain date in March where teams can pick up their free agents’ contracts again or something like that?

I could be wrong but I thought I heard that.

that aint gonna happen...he'd make less money that way...

because we arent paying him 5 mil. Also, Soth already talked about vlad being on a new team during the Matsui press conference. Thats as close as you can get to the proverbial nail in the coffin when the coach wishes you well on another team…yikes…

I was more curious about the date than anything

If he was available for that long, we could probably sign him for like $1 mil.

Not that it would happen, just wondering if it was possible under the FA rules.

really? The FO is posturing like we didnt offer him anything...

that is interesting…I wonder if what we offered him was what we ended up paying Matsui. If this is true, this makes me feel better because it was HIS decision to walk away and not the Angels FO.

Yes. I'm not sure if I should tell you where I heard it because you might laugh.

Remember when that place on Beach Blvd had a signing event for Vladdy? He and his cousins* were there to work out the details ahead of time, and the cousins were talking about the two-year deal he had been offered by the Angels, and complaining. His cousins were insisting that he needed a longer contract and for more money. They seem to be the reason he started charging for his autograph, even if he does end up giving a big chunk of that money to charity. I’m not sure, but it sounds like their egos are a lot larger than his.

I suppose if I had that kind of money I’d be getting a lot of advice from my relatives, and I’d ignore most of it because I know my relatives so very well.

I was also told that Vladdy’s English is pretty good.

In one of the major sports sites (ESPN or FOX),

I read quite a while ago that the Angels had offed him some form of a two-year contract…………Vlad wanted three years. I never saw anything else backing that up.

I do recall reading in another article where Moreno implied that they had been trying to talk (negotiate) with Vlad for quite a while, to no avail.

by wumbug on Jan 7, 2010 8:05 PM PST up reply actions

that is pretty amusing...

but its probably accurate. I doubt they have much of a sway over what Vlad decides. I feel like that would involve more his agent. Who knows though….

by BryanHarvey'sMoustache on Jan 7, 2010 8:34 PM PST up reply actions

It's likely both him and his agent

His agent just wants as big a bonus as possible.

Vlad never made any secret about his desire to play in the field and play full-time. The Angels were very interested in re-signing him to DH for a long time. He was likely their first choice and would have been perfect for the role given his injury history from playing the outfield.

The Angels had a spot for him in the lineup and offered it to him. He didn’t accept so they went with plan B in Matsui. If somebody offers you a job and you don’t take it they’re under no obligation to hold it for you.

That's a 3-pointer from the corner

I have to believe that Vlad was always Option 1, but within the financial parameters the team had already established. At least they were honest enough to not promise him playing time on the field to get him signed and then announce him as the DH once the season began.

While it is true that Guerrero posted monster numbers in Arlington, it should also be noted those numbers were posted against Ranger pitching. Aside from batting practice, it remains to be seen how well he will hit in a Ranger home uni.

Vlad may not be happy with the offer.

And as much as it pains me to say this, that could be a great motivator for him this upcoming season. Since nobody else is offering any money for Vlad’s services, and returning to the Halos is improbable at best, I don’t see him turning down the Rangers offer.

vlad is clueless as far as what he's worth...

i could see him seriously thinking that he’s worth 2 yrs 24 million or 3 yrs 30 million. vlad right now you should happy with 1 year 5-7 million, prove you can still rake then try to get another 1 yr. deal for 10-12 or a 2-3 yr deal.

The Angels gotta play that when The Rangers come to town.

That would be hilarious when Vlad came to bat, or Oliver pitched.

No matter what happens from here on, it has been a great season.
