Agreed.
It seems like what Texas was already good at, got better at. And what Seattle was already good at, got better at. But neither team has made that next step.

Should be interesting
To see if losing Vlad and Figgins to division rivals, and Lackey to a hated playoff rival will come back to haunt the GM formally known as the ninja….
The additions of Rodney and Matsui are looking pretty insignificant right about now….
Honestly, losing Lackey, Figgins, and especially VLad does not bother me one bit
The offense preformed better when Vlad was not in the lineup, Lackey has been injured and took about half a year to get going the past three years or so, and Figgins just isnt a good leadoff hitter save those two years he actually tried.
Whatever, I honestly think the Angels will still win 90+
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....

So do we
We’ve got 20-25 guys that are out to prove it’s their turn and have been shown how to do it for the last several years.

Will miss Figgy at the hot corner for sure..
Vlad will be missed just off what he does,he didn’t take us to the playoffs last year.but will miss his smile and all.. Dissapointed with all the ppl saying he rejected this offer and demands to plsy OF.. No sourrces just bitter ppl who know it all..
We are by far still the best team in the division, but it has gotten better and I think may be as good as AL Least with Doc gone, and bad teams in TO and Baltimore..
We now have Cliff lee,Weaver,Harden,Vlad,Bub,Kedry,Hamilton,Felix, etc.. Lots of talent in the west…gonna be a wild yeah !
Um...Arte and Reagins had been talking to his agents for all of '09
And couldn’t reach a deal. They stated this many times.
I’m not bitter, but it’s not like they didn’t try to bring him back.

Ah but it is a differnt addition you are missing
Addition of:
Rodney for Oliver
Matsui for Vlad
Wood for Figgins
Kazmir for Lackey
mustard_man for Quinlan
the only ones that worry me are
“Kazmir for Lackey”
and
“Wood for Figgins”
posted from a yellow submarine.
Not seeing the math there.
Rodney is not nearly the pitcher that Oliver is (and those that buy “saves” as some sort of counting stat of value are dupes). The guy is shit with upside. To say he has control is to say Nick Nolte is a pioneer in airport chic.
Matsui and Vlad are equal injury risks. That was a total wash. Either could fly high or slouch toward retirement. If the cost of either was going to be one year at five or six mil, might as well keep Vladdy since he’s a sweet man with a sweet mother who keeps the Latin players well-fed and happy, and the fans are emotionally invested in him. Matsui might be fine, and he had a better season than Vlad last year, but I don’t see a huge difference here. The Asian marketing potential on a one-year flyover contract feels exaggerated to me.
Wood will not be as valuable as Figgins in 2010. Maybe he will be in 2011 or 2012.
Kazmir and Lackey spent equal time on the DL last season, and Kazmir throws more pitches to strike out fewer batters while putting more of them on base. Kazmir PLUS Lackey was nice. Kazmir PLUS Santana or Palmer ain’t as sweet.
We’re less strong than we were last season, our rotation is full of question marks, with a fairly shallow pool in AA/AAA and there are injury risks everywhere. Abreu, Hunter, Matsui, and Santana are all clear DL candidates, and Saunders and Shields not far behind.
I’m not bullish on this season. It’s probably going to hurt. The draft will be fun, but that’s not 162 days of summer. I think all the buffalo stancing in the forums these days is just that — tuff talk. But the tears shall come, brothers and sisters.
I’m just surprised that the FO decided to wipe the slate clean of every major face of this franchise (Lackey, K-Rod, Vlad, Figgins) in 12 mos. Torii Hunter and Bobby Abreu have great smiles, but they’re imports in the late autumns of their careers. We’re pretty devoid of characters at this point. Given so much tragedy in so little time, it feels a little raw to reset the table completely.
C’mon boys, show us the thread, give us a story, a little continuity somewhere. Throw the fans a bone. Spend a few extra bucks — sign Chapman, or something. The best you can say about this off-season is that there’s some rational risk management happening. But an ounce of inspiration? A gram? Nah. Not even.
by Turks Teeth on Jan 9, 2010 8:06 PM PST up reply actions 5 recs
I hear what your saying, and it's profound, and deep down I agree:
there is something “that feels a little raw” here, a little deflating. We ‘man-up’ , or buffalo-up perhaps, as you say, and we wave our Halo banners and bring on the Candide-esque best-of-all-worlds optimism to the table, and support our team come hell or high water, but…there is very much a current of deep tredidation flowing through the Halo pond and rippling the red waters. I do feel, however, that Matsui is more than “an ounce of inspiration”, and, if he stays healthy, will provide the kind of juice, elegance, legendary stature and clutchness to the team—if he can stay healthy—that sort of thing like Reggie brought to the team years ago). Wood can be a fan’s “darling.” And perhaps adding Washburn can resonate in several positive ways: to not only eat up innings and be our insurance pitcher, but sort of replace some of the 2002 guys we lost and remind us of that moment and team (and return a “major face” as you say), when it all came together in Zen perfection.
RELAX TURK
I agree with you on Rodney. Lot of ink to spill on the bullpens 3rd or 4th most important arm.
Equal risks? Reagins saw both medical evaluations and picked one set of sore knees over the other. Maybe Matsui hitting from the left side means a little more here.
We have to break in Wood at 4-A sometime.
Kazmir is younger than Santana, Saunders and Weaver. His best season ever coincided with a year of Mike Butcher as his pitching coach. You can turn that frown upside down Charlie Brown.
The inspiration is in the W’s… it ain’t 1990 in Anaheim.
Fans got thrown a bone with the 4-year G.A. contract
Don’t recall that turning out to be the wisest $48 million ever spent. Erstad got overpaid long after you could describe him as a plus player.
I’m more upset along the loyalty lines you suggest by the Frankie-for-Fuentes swap, given that K-Rod is still young w/ potential upside, and the money was pretty much equal. But even there, if overpaying Rodney buys us enough cover to get out of paying Fuentes a third year, that starts looking strategically ok, too, especially if it’s true Frankie was a horse’s ass & losing his stuff.
This is officially the Angels M.O. — develop good young talent, let it help you win while you underpay for it, then let someone else overpay for its decline years. Selectively extend young favorites, and selectively buy your own overpriced 30somethings to fill in gaps. It is a bit raw, for both loyal fans and the players. But on balance, it has been a good strategy. Acknowledging that has little to do with Nick Nolte’s underrated buffalo work.
one of hte ironies in all this
is that Angel fans have gotten spoiled with a lot of players staying around a LONG time this past decade. The turnover we are going through this offseason is atypical of the Angels of late, but it IS typical of most teams every other season or so. Thus I think the lamentations are not commensurate with how the 2010 team is likely to fare.
What's the allotment on "lamentations"?
Make’s me feel like I’m back at church.
Captain, there are doubt's...
At some point
Faces have to change. And although Lackey, K-Rod, Vlad, and Figgins had great careers in Anaheim, at some point the leaves change color and fall. And at some point, new leaves will grow. And the face of the franchise has to change. You have to grow your new talent. Kendry Morales, Eric Aybar, Howie Kendrick, Juan Rivera, and Napoli/Matthews are all coming back. Weaver, Saunders, and Santana are coming back.
The entire franchise face hasn’t changed.

I'd prefer to refrain from conceding defeat until we're actually, you know, defeated.
There has not been a single pitch thrown in Spring Training, let alone the 2010 season. All of this alarmist behavior is largely unwarranted and, quite frankly, it’s getting old.
Games are won on the field, not by stats, projections and the idle babble printed by eastern sports analysts who know nothing of the AL West other than that it exists. Nor are they won by how many millions of dollars were spent or not spent or by the taunting of ignorant blowhards who are excited because their team got a shiny new toy from a rival.
The fact is that all teams go through a turnover period. It was bound to happen to us because we had a lot of guys coming off of long-term contracts. And you know what, I’d rather have it happen now when we have plenty of guys hitting their prime and some veterans to hold us over.
Figgins and Vlad were great, but part of what made them great was the team they were a part of. The lineup and infield that made Figgins an All-Star still dwells in Anaheim, not Seattle. We have 3 starting pitchers that were All-Stars much more recently than Lackey. Texas, Oakland, and probably even Seattle would gladly take our starting rotation over theirs. So would many other teams. Hell, they’d all probably take our offense too. The teams of the AL West and most of MLB would LOVE to have the Angels’ “problems”.
You can call me a homer or a buffalo or whatever you want, I don’t really care. I tend not to base my opinins based on what other people think of them. I consider my stance a realistic one. The tears and disappointment may come or not. However, this will be revealed in September or October, not now in January.
It’s January 11th and we are the defending 3-Time AL West Champs who just slayed the hated Boston Red Sox in their own sanctuary. We will remain so until someone stands up and proves otherwise. Until then, I suggest that everyone quit cryin’ and act accordingly.

agreed… The Lackey loss is tough, but look at the rotation and the lineup up and down…You all know I love Vlad, but he hasn’t carried the team since 2007, and everyone walks over the mountain at some point..LuCKILY for Vlad,he landed in Texas, best of luck 2 him but I don’t see Texas winning the division ..wildcard maybne ?
I’mpraying Vlad for a .320 25 -75 and actually trhink he can do better if he takes advantage of his RBI situations, which he didnt do last year….
Figgy huge loss, but replaceable, his glove was phenomenal and he was a great leadoff guy,but ya have 2 move on….
Best of luck Angels 2010
Another way of looking at it:
Rodney for Olliver……….$6MM vs $3.5MM (possibly $5-$6MM in arbitration). I’m sure Fuentes took notice.
Matsui and Abreu for Vlad……….$6MM plus $9MM vs. $15MM.
Wood for Figgins…….$.5MM vs. $9MM (Aybar’s gonna do just fine in lead off while Wood hits 27).
Kazmir and Weaver for Lackey……….$8MM plus ~$3MM vs. $$18MM. (We’ve got enough bodies for the #5 slot).
Sandoval for Quinlan…..$.45MM vs. $1.5MM. (Switch Hitter,versatile, good D).
Totally agree.
Hope I’m wrong but it feels like this years team might be alot like the underperforming teams of the pre2000’s. Seattle is looking pretty threatening this coming season. Hopefully our young guys step up and are all they’re hyped to be. (That’s you Wood)

Not sure I agree
Suzuki
Figgins
Bradley
Lopez
Griffey
Guitierrez
Kotchman
whoever catches for Seattle
Wilson
That’s a lot of OBP up top, and both Gut & Kotch still have unexplored upide. IF they don’t have injuries (which is admittedly unlikely) then they might score some runs.
Seattle won 85 games last year
with the moves they’ve made this winter, it’s a reasonable expectation that their win total will go up – not down – in 2010.

Really, I wanted Vlad back but can see Matsui being better for the Angels in the long run. But I most definitely did not want Vlad on the f—ing Rangers. Dammit Reagins, at least drive up the damn price on him a bit, though that probably wasn’t even possible post-Matsui. Argh. Anyone else could have had him with no real complaint. Really, anyone. $111 miIlion is what I've got for the opening day, 25-man roster.
Round numbers. Including arbitration-driven raises for Napoli, Izturis, Saunders, Weaver, Kendrick, Aybar, Mathis and Willits.
‘Course, I’m guessing at the exact arb/raise amounts, but using reasonable precedents for each I’m probably close enough for government work. Doubt I’m off more than a million total for the group. Together, they go from ~$6.4M last year to ~$19M this year if you want to compare/check/argue/whine.
Which ‘bring-ups’ you fill out the last few roster spots with makes no material difference to the final number – they are all right around minimums. Your mileage may vary.

Cant say I like the direction of the team
Cant say I don’t. I LOVED letting figgy and lackey go. I hope Olive’s golden age is over. The facts are that all those guys were getting older and less valuable. Lackey at 82 million is a joke, if they get 3 full seasons out of that moley fuck i will be surprised. Figgins probably will never sniff the playoffs again, but if he does, I am sure he will promptly shit the bed. Oli, was the man, gonna miss him, but he is a 100. We have a shitload of good picks next year, and we need to pay up and make those picks come to realization in a few years. Also, we have a stellar free agent market, which i am glad we saved up for, in 2011. In the end, all is good.

.300/.347/.498 in the 2nd half of 2009 for Vlad
His first half of 2009 was ruined by a torn pec. If he’s recovered from his various ailments and the Rangers limit him to DH duty, I wouldn’t be surprised if Vladdy posts .320/.375/.550 in 2010. I hope he does well while the Angels wrap up another AL West title.
It will be an interesting season series with Texas!
I see most of my Halo games in Arlington (in-laws live there, don’t need a motel) and have witnessed a few monumental shots out of that band box. Balls rocket out of there during the summer, not like in Anaheim where the denser marine air tends to put reverse thrust on well hit balls. My guess, educated or not, is that Vlad’s slugging percentage will show a significant improvemant over the last couple of years IF he can stay healthy.
I would not be surprised if Vlade has a better season than Matsui
after watching Godzilla look a LOT worse limping around the field than Vlade for 3 years, I’m very nervous about this move. GMJ as DH anyone?

I realize that Vlad had a good post season in 2009.
However, try to visualize each AB during those games, replacing Vlad with Matsui.
I would have to go back to check the box scores, but it seems to me that there were an awful lot of runners left in scoring position that took the wind out of our sails.
Having said that, I’m as sad as anyone that Vlad is gone.
I kinda' made my peace with this...
…after we signed Matsui.
OK, I'm finally over losing Tex. Thanks Kendry.
I wish Vlad the best of luck
and I’ll enjoy watching him ground into a double play with the game on the line in Anaheim
Just hope there aren't two outs or he'll get the huge hit.
Rest in peace, Rory. When I think of some of the greatest moments my Angels fandom, I hear your voice describing them. Thanks for everything you gave us.
This offseason sucks balls.
What do you need a fancy suit for, Charlie, you ain't got no job to wear it to.
Far from surprised by Vlad signing with Texas.
Thanks for the memories, it was great while it lasted, I only wish we could’ve gotten that elusive second WS ring while Vlad was here. Although i’m sure Vlad will bounce back and have a solid year, I seem to recall many here, myself included, felt that Vlad wasn’t the same player or hitter that he once was. Losing Vlad to the Rangers sucks, and Matsui may or may not be the DH we want, but he’s the one we have. Truth be told we’ll probably miss Lackey and cousin Oliver more than Vlad. But i’ll still miss him.

In that lineup, in that park
Vlad will be the number 4 option at best. He will have a monster year, if he stays healthy. That is a big freaking if. When was the last time he was completely healthy. the guy is an animal, has the best bat speed I’ve ever seen. But like most non-juicers, he is slowing and breaking down as he ages. He will have big days in Texas but he will have a lot of small ones too. I just hope the small ones are against us.

vlad is irreversibly declining.
he can’t run and his power stroke is fading fast he could certainly have a solid season, but the vlad that tore the ballpark a new one no longer exists.
that being said, he could put up matsui-like numbers (with a bit more avg) for home games as a ranger.

Well, we'll see when the rubber meets the road, whether Reagins is up for the task of a MLB GM.
only time will tell. As of now his chip stack certainly isn’t good with me.
Spot the Looney
Your hatred of the man is irrational, as it cannot be based upon facts. Fact: Reagins brought in Torii Hunter, who immediately became the face of the franchise and the locker room leader. Fact: Reagins dealt a slick-fielding singles hitter who plays a power position for one of the best hitters in the game today, in the hope of putting the team over the top. Fact: Reagins signed one Matt Palmer, a castoff from the Giants, who contributed several solid starts that nobody else expected at a point in the season when the team desperately needed it. Fact: Reagins brought in Bobby Abreu at a bargain basement price at a time when most teams didn’t think he had much left. Fact: the team has won the division every year Reagins has been GM.
But we already know how you don’t like being inconvenienced by facts.
I think this sucks, along with everything else they have done in this off-season. I think Vlad deserved better than what he got. So long Big Daddy, thank you for everything. I will miss you terribly.

For the last three years
everyone has been saying that this is the year Vlad will bounce back. The fact is, though, he can no longer stay healthy, and this year it finally caught up to him as his power dropped significantly. Remember how he was supposed to be moving that much better (and therefore he’d have stronger legs) because he got his knee cleaned out last winter? No, Vlad is just about done. His bat has slowed down considerably. His strikeout numbers are way up. He’s not a bad player, but he’s just not going to be that good anymore.
The only thing that keeps me from going bat-shit crazy
is our infield. Assuming Wood pans out, we’ve got an infield that is incredibly young and incredibly talented, on the rise and going to (God willing) be around for years to come.

It's another sad day in Halo Nation
On the other hand it will be funny the first time Vlad rolls into a double play against us
yes, indeed.
i can see it now. bases jammed. one out. first pitch to vlad….weak grounder, double-play and Weaver is out of the inning.
Wont be missing that…

Never call this Halo Nation
Raider Nation, Red Sox Nation, I never wish to be in the company of those two sport organizations.

thank you.
“Nation” implies that the whole country is a fan of our team, which would make 90% of us band-wagoners. Just like Raider Nation, Red Sox Nation, and soon to be Laker Nation.

Does the fact that I've been a Laker fan since 1967 take me out of the bandwagonner category?

Of course.
My dad is an avid Lakers fan, and I have no problem with that. My main issue is with my generation of Lakers fans who have known nothing but winning, and therefore walk around with this Holier-Than-Thou attitude, disrespecting everyone they come in contact with. And yes, they are all over the country.

Yes,
but arguably worse.

Even though I convinced myself when we signed Matsui
that he was the better option numberswise, I’m still gonna miss Vlad.
Here’s hoping he goes into the hall with an A on his hat.
well i doubt he'll go in as an Expo (considering they don't exist anymore).
the question is can he have several more good seasons. Tony Reagins evidently doesn’t think so.

You prefer Bill Stoneman and the killer deal he gave GMJjr? Or maybe you miss Bill Bavasi? Give me a break dude….

Yeah
why blow your F-bomb on Reagins? Because he has eyes that can see that Vlad is only a shell of his former self? Oh yeah, I forgot, you’re one of the ones who think the Angels should outspend every other team and keep all of their players no matter how old, injured or washed up they are…and my guess is you’ll be the first to start whining when they double the beer prices to pay for it.
You can put me in agreement with Reagins
Guerrero will light it up every now and then, provide some evening sports reel highlights on occasion, but he isn’t the guy we signed in 2004; he isn’t even the guy who showed up for Spring Training in 2008 and let it be known he was in fact a year older than he had pretended to be. His slugging percentage has tailed off every single season since 2004 and last season was the first that he didn’t carry the team for a stretch and make sure the Angels made it to the finish line.
I am sure he will hit a lot of singles and a few doubles in Arlington, and he’ll hit the occasional HR. But the days of his hitting 30 HR and driving in 100+ RBI would seem to be long gone, and considering the Angels needed a DH and not a RF, Matsui would be the better bet to produce from the DH slot.
BTW, Guerrero could go into the HoF as an Expo, just as Andre Dawson could. The problem is, there is no Expos team to hold a big “Andre Dawson Day” ceremony before a game, and having the Nationals do it makes little sense. But if Dawson (or Guerrero) has more warm fuzzies about their time in the Great White North than in the US, either could elect to enter as an Expo.

Our dear friend
I know nothing of Vladimir Guerrero, sans what I see on television and read in magazines. Vlad will have a special place in my heart and I will have found memories of him. I’ll never trash my jersey, bobble head or my Vlad Faced ball cap.
I always wanted the Angels to do it for Vlad. And hoped this would be the year. I knew last year that this would be it for Vlad. 15MM is too much for a guy who looks like Frankenstein running the bases. I’m glad Vlad signed with the Rangers. I hope he tears the cover off the ball in the Lone Star state. I hope Vlad crushes the ball. And I hope the Rangers get real close with the Wild Card this year.
And whenever Vlad becomes a HOF candidate, he goes in on the first ballot. And I hope that its with a Red Halo on his head.
