Looking Ahead 2011 & Beyond
As the playoffs are currently going on and us Angel fans sit at home and are forced to watch the Rangers actually win something, I thought to myself a few offseason scenario's that the Angels might pursue.....
Scenario 1.) This first offseason scenario would be that the Angels resign Hideki Matsui and the team is stuck with another season of Bobby out in left, Fernando Rodney is closer regardless of what happens in spring training and Conger is put back in AAA in favor for Jeff Mathis and Mike Napoli. The opening day line up would look essentially like last years.
Starting Lineup
Peter Bourjos CF
Bobby Abreu LF
Torii Hunter RF
Hideki Mastui DH
Alberto Callasapo 3B
Jeff Mathis C
Erik Aybar SS
Starting Pitchers: Jered Weaver, Dan Haren, Ervin Santana, Joel Pinerio, Scott Kazmir
Bullpen: Fernando Rodney (CL), Jordan Walden, Kevin Jepsen, Jason, Bulger, Michael Kohn, Rich Thompson
Bench: Mike Napoli, Bobby Wilson, Reggie Willits, Maicer Izturis, Brandon Wood
Trades: Juan Rivera traded to the Atlanta Braves for cash or fringe prospect
Sign: Hideki Matsui 1 year 4 million
Scenario 2.) The scenario is what most dreamt of, the Angels go all out this winter by signing Carl Crawford, Adrian Beltre, and a dominate relief pitcher like Rafael Soriano. They trade Mike Napoli and Juan Rivera for prospects and remove Scott Kazmir from the rotation and go with Trevor Bell. Then give Hank Conger the starting catching job after releasing Jeff Mathis.
Starting Line up #2
Peter Bourjos CF
Bobby Abreu DH
Carl Crawford LF
Kendry Morales 1B
Torii Hunter RF
Howie Kendrick 2B
Hank Conger C
Erik Aybar SS
Starting Pitching: Jered Weaver, Dan Haren, Ervin Santana, Joel Pinerio, Trevor Bell
Bullpen: Rafael Soriano(CL), Fernando Rodney, Jordan Walden, Kevin Jepsen, Michael Kohn, Scott Kazmir
Bench: Bobby Wilson, Brandon Wood, Alberto Callaspo, Maicer Izturis, Reggie Willts
Trades: Mike Napoli & Juan Rivera traded to the Boston Red Sox for three top prospects
Sign: Carl Crawford 6 years 95 million, Adrian Beltre 4 years 45 million, Rafael Soriano 3 years 20 million
Scenario 3.) This one is the most interesting, the Angels sign Adrian Beltre and a mid market middle reliever i.e. Scott Downs. They then put Callaspo in left field for a year or until Mike Trout is ready. Mike Napoli will get the bulk of the Catching duty with Conger backing him up and Michael Kohn gets first dibs at the closers role.
Starting Lineup #3
Peter Bourjos CF
Bobby Abreu DH
Kendry Morales 1B
Torii Hunter RF
Adrian Beltre 3B
Alberto Callaspo LF
Howie Kendrick 2B
Mike Napoli C
Erik Aybar SS
Starting Pitching: Jered Weaver, Dan Haren, Ervin Santana, Joel Pinerio, Scott Kazmir
Bullpen: Michael Kohn (CL), Fernando Rodney, Jordan Walden, Scott Downs, Kevin Jepsen, Jason Bulger
Bench: Bobby Wilson Brandon Wood, Maicer Izturis, Reggie Willts, Juan Rivera
Sign: Adrian Beltre 4 years 45 million, Scott Downs 2 years 8 million
Scenario 4.) This Scenario is probably one of the most intriguing, the Angels sign Carl Crawford after fighting the Yankees for him and sign Scott Downs. Then they trade Mike Napoli, Juan Rivera and a prospect for Dan Uggla, they then start the year off with Fernando Rodney as closer. Then they also put Jeff Mathis as catcher with Conger backing up.
Starting Lineup #4
Peter Bourjos CF
Bobby Abreu DH
Carl Crawford LF
Kendry Morales 1B
Torii Hunter RF
Dan Uggla 3B
Howie Kendrick 2B
Jeff Mathis C
Erik Aybar SS
Starting Pitching: Jered Weaver, Dan Haren, Ervin Santana, Joel Pinerio, Scott Kazmir
Bullpen Bullpen: Fernando Rodney(CL), Michael Kohn, Jordan Walden, Scott Downs, Kevin Jepsen, Jason Bulger
Bench: Bobby Wilson, Brandon Wood, Alberto Callaspo, Macier Izturis, Reggie Willits
Trade: Mike Napoli, Juan Rivera and a Prospect for Dan Uggla of the Marlins
Sign: Sign Carl Crawford 6 years 110 million, Scott Downs 2 years 8 million

only time will tell, If Arte opens his check book .......
The Yankees, will make a bid for Crawford. But They already have 2 LF & a CF…..
I do believe that Crawford signs with the Angels. Cause he knows how dangerous that outfield will be if he joins the Angels. ( w/ Hunter & Bourjous )
I kind of like Beltre @ 3rd, But what if the Angels took a look at David Wright.
And how will the platoon of Mathis/Conger be behind the plate workout ?
Can Aybar, stay heathly to have a good year @ SS ??
Aramis Ramirez
Cubs fan here, assuming the Angels aren’t able to sign Beltre, what interest do you think the halos would have in Aramis Ramirez? He has some warts, namely his contract (he is signed for about 15m in 2011, and has a player option for about 16m in 2012 if trade), and his injury history. However he tore up in the 2nd half this year after a brutal, injury driven 1st half. What do you think the angels would offer up to get his bat onboard? I obviuosly wouldn’t expect a top 5 prospect because of the money owed.

Depends
Do the Cubs need any under-performing middle infielders?
We have several
but Hendry is always looking to add to his collection. I’ve looked at the Angels prospects, and they are heavy in pitching (outside of trout, conger and bourjos, three guys I wouldn’t expect the Angels to part with) and the Cubs are also pitcher heavy in the minors. I think Reckling and Brandon Wood would get it done, but I don’t think that the Angels would give up Reckling. I think Wood just isn’t going to ever make it in LA, but maybe a change of scenery could help the kid.

looking right now:
a yankees/rangers alcs really sucks ass big time. honestly, i would care more about the rate of water condensation at room temperature than i would about the alcs. really, really boring.
more to the point: how did our situation become so hopeless? seems like it happened overnight. through the course of a season.
oh, snap.
It's not hopeless, it just requires some intelligent analysis followed by wheeling and dealing
The Rangers only won 5 more games than last year. It’s not like they made some great leap forward.

That's what I'm preaching
It wasn’t so much the Ranger’s success as it was the Angel’s failure. Reaching the top again shouldn’t be as difficult as everyone suggests.

I'm not too sure about that...
…this team is further behind Texas than just KMo returning – especially if Lee returns to the Rangers
Unless he refuses to go to New York, I think its likely that Lee won't stay in Arlington
Without Lee, they’re pitching staff is worthless. One solid year by a Lewis or a Wilson means nothing. Just ask Scott Feldman. I really think that with whatever off season acquisitions the Angels make, they can outperform Texas.

Yeah but
the Rangers started out the season bankrupt, and are now owned by The Express and Co. You know he’s going to give Arte a run for his money.

This isn't annoying yet, but it will be soon.
Imagining scenarios is only going to be fun for so long. I know it’s one of few ways to pass the time in this extra long off-season, but really none of us have any idea what Reagins will do. He’s proven that time and again. Although I got pretty close to calling the Haren trade with this fan post: http://www.halosheaven.com/2010/7/10/1563420/perpetuating-the-rumor-mill-angels
I’ve been preaching the idea of moving Morales to 3B, keeping Napoli at 1B, and signing Crawford (or a DH like Konerko or Dunn if we can’t get Crawford). But if that’s not realistic, Beltre is a better option than Callaspo, if money is no object. As for the bullpen, I personally think it will be fine next year as it is, as long as they demote Rodney to a mop-up role. Go ahead and give Walden a try as closer, and have Jepsen set up. I really think Walden already has the balls for it.

I hadn't heard your suggestion yet about Morales and Napoli...
But I like it.

BTW
Your pig is awesome! Is he named Gubi? I have a Beagle named Hudler. Is your pig actually a pet, or will he be slaughtered some day?

It's a pet we've had two years now named Franchesca.
Actually, a great (believe it or not) house pet – potty trained and all.

Morales to 3B
are you nuts he will be a glaus and his bat will hurt from that position

Since we're talking specifics
What about Scenarios 5 through 183,179,714? I’m partial to Scenario 441,868 myself.
Eh, If you think about it critically
Scenario 3,233 is much better for us in the long run.
BOURJOS BOURJOS BOURJOS BOURJOS
You're both wrong.
Scenario 1,583,794 is the best. Look at it and I think you’ll agree with me.
