this is simple.

This article states that Reagins "fumed"
That would imply that he has emotions which I don’t agree with.

Reagins vindicated here
Minutes later, Crawford’s agents went to deliver the bad news to Reagins, who was irate. When Reagins reminded the agents, “You told me $142 million [would get it done]!” the agents responded: “We said that’s what it would take; we didn’t say we’d [guarantee] a deal.”
Screw Crawford. HE chose the chowds over us. He’s an enemy of the state of Halo now.

From an Angel perspective it's all hearsay
but, if true, I feel really good about us meeting the requested contract (and matching the Boston offer) to get “our guy”. That didn’t get it done? You picked them over us with equivalent offers? Fine. Screw you.
I’m right there with you Rev.
+1
I feel like we were dating the cute, girl next door type in school, then she had her braces removed and the jock QB came in and swooped her up.
That was an enjoyable article to read as well, even if it’s frustrating.
#34, never forget.
I enjoyed it too
Because if Arte was willing to spend that much on Crawford, then Beltre probably won’t even be a question.
We can solve LF in several other ways.

I don't know.......
won’t even be a question.
Boras is the agent………..it’s conceivable that that means more than we might expect
My point
Is that the amount we supposedly approved for Crawford is nearly twice what even the high estimates for Beltre are.
Of course, that could mean nothing with Boras, but I don’t think it does in this case.

That *actually* happened to me
But it wasn’t the jock QB, it was my (former) best friend.
Angels baseball. We do what we must, because we can -- HaloDutch
See I kinda think the opposite....
if it was just about the money we could blame that, but fact is we offered the money and he still chose the Sox. This places the blame on Reagins and Arte for not selling well enough. Always be closing Mr. Reagins. You weren’t paying attention and you lost this deal because of that.
Always be Closing! Do not give the agents the power here. You lost control of the deal.

Not every player thinks playing for the Angels is the best gig in the world
Have to remember that no matter how great of a sell job Reagins did, Crawford had his reasons for staying in the AL East. Maybe Reagins could have done better – the article doesn’t speak to that.
The big issue for me is: (1) The agents lied to Reagins about what it would take to get Crawford signed or (2) Reagins blew it by not understanding the parameters of the deal. Either the agents said $142m would get it done or they didn’t.
In any event, $20m for 7 years is too much. That’s money that can be spent elsewhere.
Always be closing. Always be selling.
Tony got outsold, stupid deadline tactics and all. I mean, really, for who or what did we need that money for so badly the next morning that we had to put an 11pm arm-twist on top of the offer? Note that Boston didn’t need to do anything to set themselves up as the good guy. They simply let us turn ourselves intot he bad guy.
And, for the love of God, how many times do you have to get punked before you learn how to phrase a closing question correctly?

And it probably would not have hurt to get pre-approval for the value every other soul in baseball was expecting.
Particularly after the Werth deal.

The One Thing
that impressed me (I’d read the same thing elsewhere) was the home visit by the Boston brass. This may be where the Angels lost the deal. It sounds as though they were relying on Torii to sell the team (and for SoCal to sell itself). One has to wonder if Crawford would have made the same choice if the Angels had shown as much interest in him personally, apart from the money.
The vibe I have gotten from interviews past is he is an East Coast guy.
In more than one interview I have read with him as the subject, I always felt he was more comfortable playing on the right coast. Not once did he say that, but that was the vibe I got from him. Just a gut thing.

As we recall, Reagins was "late" getting to Orlando.
Wonder if the flew Continental, changing planes from OC at Bush International in Houston?

Thinking outside the box,
I blame CC’s 6 y/o kid. Apparently he’s a closet Red Sox fan…
Representing the Angels in Sin City.
That's pretty gut-wrenching
As much as I think this is an overpayment, I won’t lie. I was really hoping to see Crawford in an Angels uniform. To hear that the Angels were 10 minutes away from getting their guy, and didn’t even have the chance to counter-offer, just absolutely kills me.
Does this allay some of the criticism that’s been heaped on Reagins so far? I’m struggling to find a way to blame this on him, unless you think he should have been more aggressive. I don’t have an intricate knowledge of how these negotiations work, so if there’s something the Angels could have done differently in that situation, I’d be interested to hear it.
Defending maligned chants since 2009
Negotiations-wise
Once the agent said “head or tails” to CC, there was nothing we could have done but wait for the coinflip in his mind to land.
IF there was a failure here, it was a failure of us to be seen as glamorous and “top dog” a franchise as the Red Sox profile has been established nationally.
This is one time all the complaints about East Coast Bias media coverage manifest as voicing a pragmatic concern.
Or it could just be resistance to change
CC has spend his entire career in the AL East. Boston offered the least disruption to his life.
Crawford probably felt that his stats would be enhanced more in Fenway
than they would in the Big A, thus increasing his chances of getting into the HOF.

We set a deadline that caused the agent for CC to say
OK ALL OFFERS NOW. Which didnt give us a chance to respond with a contract before our own set deadline after the Sawk blew us out of the water.

they were done setting deadlines? didn’t I read that somewhere?
assuming so, this means the first big fish they bid on they ended up setting a deadline. wtf?

That set the deadline… but yeah supposedly the angels were.no longer setting deadlines
by wheres_bourjos_at on Dec 13, 2010 3:46 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
They likely meant immediate deadlines
From what we’ve heard, any time Arte made any offer, it came with a deadline. This basically meant our strategy was “take it or leave it.” Now it appears they are being more flexible and open to making counter-offers.
Still, at some point in any business deal, somebody has to say “all right, are we doin’ this thing or not?”

The deadline made perfect sense.
Both the Angels and Red Sox were spooked by CC meeting with the Yankees on Tuesday. Neither team wanted to repeat the Teixeira fiasco. At the time, Cliff Lee might sign at any time, and the Yankees would jump full force into the CC bidding if Lee signed with Texas. Both the Angels and Red Sox wanted to preclude that possibility.
It's a game the two teams play with one another
The Yankees met with Crawford, even though they didn’t have an opening in the OF and it wasn’t a high offseason priority. Since they’re the Yankees, other teams assume they’re in the bidding. Cashman did it just to screw with the Red Sox.
The flip side was the meeting the Red Sox had with Cliff Lee’s agent. There, an offer was floated for 7 years, but at a per-season average far below the then-current offers. It was made with the understanding that Lee’s agent could now go to the media and announce there was a 7-year offer in the mix, forcing the hand of the Yankees to go to 7 years when Cashman had said 6 was as high as he’d go, and making the Rangers go to 6 from 5. The Red Sox didn’t have an opening in the rotation for Lee and it wasn’t their highest offseason priority to pursue him; Epstein just did it to screw with the Yankees.
"I can't tell people what to think or not to think. Their perceptions are their perceptions. We just feel we've taken a step forward. At the end of the day, we have to play 162 games. Once that happens then we'll be able to evaluate the offseason moves."~Tony Reagins, on the Angels' offseason

This is like bad good news.
Seems even when the Angels do try and compete on this level, the superstars don’t want to head out to Anaheim.
I can’t blame them though. The 24/7 coverage you get out East in the mecca of baseball is pretty good for your career…and your wallet. I’d do the same if I’m ever reborn with the talent to play ball.
Sounds as though the Angels reputation and team location isn't enough to land
the big stars the Halos have persued over recent years. Looks like Arte is going to need to change his spending philosophy in order to get the desired players.
When I'm not at the stadium, I'd rather be watching my Halos back in Costa Rica!
Later reports contradict this
It was reported that sources within the Angels insisted that they had not gone over the 108 million offer except in terms of the vesting year. Why would the Angels say that if it were not true?
"Pie Iesu domine, dona eis requiem".
Perhaps
I still find that scenaro unlikely. It is more likely that we just low balled Crawford. I doubt the Angels gave up a perfectly good excuse to their failing to sign Crawford in the hopes that Scott Boras would not find out the truth. Doing so would seem to seriously underestimate the super agent
"Pie Iesu domine, dona eis requiem".
That article is slightly less enjoyable than
being kicked in the nuts repeatedly. But it’s a close second.

Bottom line is that the Angels failed, period.
whether it turns out to bite us in the ass down the road or bite the Sox is yet to be seen, but they spent the time to sell CC on Boston (and his family) with multiple visits, haven’t seen anywhere that the Angels took that sort of step, if they were so set on CC why wasn’t Torii with them to make the presentation? Were they just lazy and figured they had it in the bag from media reports or were they really not interested in taking on a huge contract that may go GMJ? I they were really interested they obviously fell on their face in the “sell the Angels organization” department. Bottom line though is fail.
Really? You are going to take yourself that seriously? Well I guess someone has to.
