Two minor leaguers are going to DC from Oakland for Josh Willingham, but they haven't been named yet. MLBTR is also reporting that Magglio Ordonez is re-signing with the Tigers. Adrian Beltre needs to be signed by the Angels soon. Alternatives and supplements are disappearing by the day.

Tony has already signed 4 free agents this offseason (kendry, haren, downs, some japanese guy)

These are huge splashes, if you think about it (in an aquatic metaphor type of way).

Willingham would have been a great addition

It seems like the Nats wanted one of the prospects to be a big leaguer who is cheap and had some experience. On our team, that would have been Bourjos or Trumbo. I doubt Trumbo would have excited the Nats very much, and I also doubt we would part with Bourjos.

by Brody on Dec 16, 2010 11:18 AM PST up reply actions

I'm a self-admitted Bourjos nuthugger, but...

I wouldn’t give up either guy in a deal for Willingham. Sure, he posts a great OBP….but that’s about it, not very good defense, and not a whole lot of pop. I’d rather stick with Bourjos’s legendary defense, and hope there’s some upside in that bat. As for Trumbo, I’d rather use him in a package deal for an impact bat.

Based upon what information?

If you’ve followed the team for a minimum of one week, you know that Reagins despises negotiations played out in the public. We should not know one way or the other if we’re negotiating.

We can only speculate.

I wouldn’t call anyone crazy for thinking Beltre signs with the A’s, Tony cries in a public restroom, then gives a deadpan interview about how this team is committed to winning.

Wrong, wrong, wrong and wrong
yes he does the jays, indians, cards and red sox are among teams needing a 3b with some power besides us

The Red Sox are not going to spend another $50M+ on Beltre when they have Youklis. Period.

The Indians are in a rebuilding mode (again) and are shedding payroll, not adding it.

The Cardinals are saving their pennies for next Winter, when they have to offer a contract to Pujols and hope he stays. Supposedly, the Cubs are shopping Zambrano to the Yankees and Alfonso Soriano to anyone to try and shed some payroll and make a run on Pujols, too (Pena is signed for just one season). Many other teams will be sniffing around Albert, so the Cards aren’t going to be spending freely this Winter on anybody.

The Jays would have to pay a premium to get Beltre to play up in Toronto, and they’re not likely to be doing so.

It is true that Beltre doesn’t have a lot of options. Meanwhile, Ordonez is said to have signed with the Tigers on a one-year deal, so the attention of Team Boras may some come to focus on Beltre. He and Rafael Soriano are the top clients left to place.

"I can't tell people what to think or not to think. Their perceptions are their perceptions. We just feel we've taken a step forward. At the end of the day, we have to play 162 games. Once that happens then we'll be able to evaluate the offseason moves."~Tony Reagins, on the Angels' offseason

I could see Toronto as a possibility

They have a lot of payroll space now, although Vernon Wells still has their long-term potential in a vice-grip. I’m not sure how deep their organization is at third.

by Suboptimal on Dec 16, 2010 12:48 PM PST up reply actions

Whatever Boras thinks he can get for Beltre in the US

…the Blue Jays would have to pay a Canadian premium, since (A) Beltre would be about as far away from his family as baseball can make it (until a team in Nova Scotia is approved), and (B) the Ca and US dollars are almost even right now, but currency changes in the next 4-5 years could take a toll on his salary—hence, the Jays would pay more than the Angels. It wasn’t that long ago that the Ca dollar was about US$0.80 in exchange.

"I can't tell people what to think or not to think. Their perceptions are their perceptions. We just feel we've taken a step forward. At the end of the day, we have to play 162 games. Once that happens then we'll be able to evaluate the offseason moves."~Tony Reagins, on the Angels' offseason

by George Kaplan on Dec 16, 2010 1:08 PM PST up reply actions

They are, but players in Canada are paid in Canadian currency

The contract, when announced, is in US dollars, but the player isn’t paid in US dollars.

Troy Glaus got a raise in his salary when the Dbacks traded him to the Jays in order to compensate for the lost value of the Ca dollar in his salary.

"I can't tell people what to think or not to think. Their perceptions are their perceptions. We just feel we've taken a step forward. At the end of the day, we have to play 162 games. Once that happens then we'll be able to evaluate the offseason moves."~Tony Reagins, on the Angels' offseason

by George Kaplan on Dec 16, 2010 1:21 PM PST up reply actions

They are paid out in current value

Player A signs for 4 years at $10M per season. In Season 1, the Ca dollar is worth US$1.

But by Season 4, if the Ca dollar is then worth just US$0.87, that means the player is taking a haircut because of fluctuations in currency. He doesn’t get an escalator clause to make his contract worth the same in US$ from year to year, any more than a player for the Royals gets an escalator to compensate if inflation robs his $10M salary of some of its pop.

Thus, agents will pad the demanded per-year salary to cover the player in the event that the Canadian dollar loses significant value over the years. Obviously, this works only for top-line players and makes sense only for those in long-term deals (and Beltre would fit both descriptions). David Eckstein signing a two-year deal would simply get what he gets.

"I can't tell people what to think or not to think. Their perceptions are their perceptions. We just feel we've taken a step forward. At the end of the day, we have to play 162 games. Once that happens then we'll be able to evaluate the offseason moves."~Tony Reagins, on the Angels' offseason

by George Kaplan on Dec 16, 2010 1:36 PM PST up reply actions

So in other words

The exchange rate for the duration of the contract is fixed at the exchange rate at the time of signing?

by Suboptimal on Dec 16, 2010 1:40 PM PST up reply actions

Yes

Just as if the same deal was signed in Kansas City. The difference is, US$ will be constant in KC, but Ca $ can and will vary according to exchange rates.

"I can't tell people what to think or not to think. Their perceptions are their perceptions. We just feel we've taken a step forward. At the end of the day, we have to play 162 games. Once that happens then we'll be able to evaluate the offseason moves."~Tony Reagins, on the Angels' offseason

Canadian teams face a unique challenge

In that all the North American pro-leagues pay their players in US dollars.

Back in October 2007, the Canadian dollar was making significant gains against the US dollar. Jays CEO Paul Godfrey addressed the situation during an interview with Deborah Amos.
source

DEBORAH AMOS, host:
The U.S. dollar’s value has been falling steeply. And yesterday, the Canadian dollar hit its highest value in over 30 years when the loonie, as the Canadian dollar is called, pulled level with the U.S. dollar.

Mr. PAUL GODFREY (President and Chief Executive Officer, Toronto Blue Jays):
That will be a cause for a little celebration since the paying was so great. For many years, it’s nice to have on the other foot for a change. For our club, with a payroll of around $90 million, for every penny that the dollar goes up, it’s a savings of $600,000.

AMOS: The Blue Jays is a Canadian baseball team but almost all of your players are from the U.S. So they’re being paid in U.S. dollars. How does that equation work?

Mr. GODFREY: Well, in North American sports – in basketball, baseball, hockey, and football – all teams are paid in U.S. currency no matter what the dollar happens to be in Canada.

by XYZ123 on Dec 16, 2010 3:48 PM PST up reply actions

Players in Canada are paid in US dollars

In October 2008, Blue Jays President Paul Godfrey noted the following:

The team “typically purchases vast amounts of U.S. dollars, out of which to pay the players, when rates are favourable, but did not buy enough to cover the entire payroll this time.”
source

This makes perfect sense. Why should the player have to take on currency risk?

by XYZ123 on Dec 16, 2010 3:27 PM PST up reply actions

Interesting

From the Blue Jays page at the time of the Glaus trade from AZ:

Glaus was given a Canadian Tax Equalization Adjustment, which will ensure that the value of his contract will remain the same despite the difference in currency and taxes. That is believed to be close to $800,000 and will be the lone financial contribution the Diamondbacks make to the transaction with the money payable in 2008.

So the phrase “currency and taxes” has more to do with the latter than the former in this case? Hard to say from the above, but I did recall this situation at the time of the trade, and the report I had read at the time indicated it was to mitigate differences in currency.

"I can't tell people what to think or not to think. Their perceptions are their perceptions. We just feel we've taken a step forward. At the end of the day, we have to play 162 games. Once that happens then we'll be able to evaluate the offseason moves."~Tony Reagins, on the Angels' offseason

by Suboptimal on Dec 16, 2010 12:50 PM PST up reply actions

Well making the playoffs once since 2003

Definitely doesn’t correlate with championships.

Going 83-79 for 50 years in a row doesn’t amount to a hill of beans without Championships.

by Zaius on Dec 16, 2010 12:55 PM PST up reply actions

Those playoff appearances still happened

So none of them resulted in a championship. The Angels have also had five straight playoff appearances without a championship. Only one out of eight teams will win, and the best you can do is give yourself as many chances as possible.

Billy Beane had a nice run

About 10 years ago. Since then, the A’s really haven’t been much of threat at all. I’m not convinced the A’s are on the precipice of anything great right now either.

by Zaius on Dec 16, 2010 1:14 PM PST up reply actions

We'll find out soon enough

They had one of the better pitching staffs in the AL last year, and the best in the division. Their defense is solid, and while they don’t have an MVP bat, they do have a bunch of guys who are above average. If they shocked us with a Beltre acquisition, I’d say they’re a pretty serious threat in a weak division.

Billy Beane thanks God Jack Z exists

…to take the “genius as chump” crown away from him. Both men have traded for Milton Bradley, and both have been burned. It is only because Bradley cost 100x more when the Mariners got him that Jack Z is the bigger chump.

I am sure it was Beane’s unparalleled use of stats which convinced him trading Andre Ethier to the Dodgers for Bradley was the way to go.

Seems to Me

that Oakland’s good teams were built largely with prospects drafted when Sandy Alderson was still in charge. What has Beane done, exactly? Traded away Dan Haren for spare parts? Signed Arthur Rhodes to be a closer?

Spare parts? Brett Andeson, Carlos Gonzalez, Chris Carter, Aaron Cunningham, Dana Eveland and Greg Smith.

Yup

Spare parts. Correct me if I’m mistaken, but isn’t Anderson the only one the A’s still have? They got rid of Gonzalez, in the Holliday deal I think, and didn’t get squat for Holliday.

Fair Enough

Lots and lots of transactions to sort through, but at this point in time, the collective contributions of those guys hasn’t been particularly remarkable. Meanwhile, Haren has been…well, Dan Haren.

My point was really that while Beane does a lot of wheeling and dealing, it’s not as if everything he touches turns to gold. A lot of what he has done seems to have amounted to nothing, really. He hasn’t done poorly, necessarily, but so far…I don’t see the results.

Too optimistic

I’d sign that contract in an instant.

by Suboptimal on Dec 16, 2010 12:31 PM PST up reply actions

I think we are going to do better than that...

there is no market for him right now. The teams that have a need at 3B are small market teams that can’t afford to even think about those numbers. I think we will all be pleasantly surprised and I agree with river, it will take a while. Maybe even late january until Boras realizes that we are the only one that is offering 44M over 4 years or 35M over 3. Contrary to what most are saying out there, I think Boras is scrambling to try to create a market for AB and this is playing out perfectly in our favor. Boras may be a magician most of the time, but I think he loses on this one. They should have taken that Oakland offer.

by land4sale on Dec 16, 2010 12:38 PM PST up reply actions

Sure, that's what *logic* says...

… but all it takes is just a drop or two of illogic, and Boras gets another jaw-dropping contract. I’ve got to think that’s he’s just loving the amount of panic setting in among Angel fans right about now, and any hints of panic that a front office that was dropping hints about big “splashes” and boosted payroll have squat-all to show for it except a couple of mid-30s relievers.

I think we’ll bid against ourselves, but I think we’ll pay a pretty penny.

by mattwelch on Dec 16, 2010 12:49 PM PST up reply actions

agree

not to mention Boras knows the financial commitment they were willing to make for Crawford, so he knows there’s money to be spent.

I'll be real disappointed if we sign him..

for more than 15M per year. There is no reason to because Reagins should know that no one else would pay anywhere close to that. I think the FO is licking their chops at an opportunity to stick it to Boras and if they don’t panic and stick their guns Boras/AB will come to us to take what we offer, within reason.

I guess I have more faith in the ninja. Maybe I shouldn’t have.

by land4sale on Dec 16, 2010 12:55 PM PST up reply actions

You'll be far more disappointed with another 80-82 team in 2011, though.

The day Kendry Morales broke his leg, the Angels were also two games under .500.

Not much has changed about this team thusfar. Two relievers, and a little more Haren. They haven’t improved enough to seriously contend.

by Turks Teeth on Dec 16, 2010 1:03 PM PST up reply actions

You are right...

I will be, but I still won’t condone a contract for AB that no one can even approach, paying 25% more than the next best offer. The offseason is not over yet. I am saddened by our progress so far like the rest of you, but I think a lot can still be done in the next 6 weeks. Let’s see how this plays out.

I will say that I am encouraged by the strength of our rotation and the depth of our bullpen now. The bullpen has been improved in my opinion, regardless of who closes. Our rotation has to be top 4 in the AL. So its not like we haven’t done anything. They just haven’t dealt with our biggest need…yet.

Clearly, Beltre wants more than the 5/64 that Oakland offered. At the very least, he goes crawling back to Beane and sees if that offer is still on the table, which it probably is.

No reason to waste time on the Bill Halls of the world

We already have Juan Rivera. At this point I see nothing remotely intriguing aside from a trade for Carlos Beltran, which I haven’t seen even trial ballooned by anyone outside of here.

by mattwelch on Dec 16, 2010 1:22 PM PST up reply actions

Beltran has full NTC

With Boras at his side, some have expected Beltran would leverage the waiving of the NTC for a contract extension of some sort. At a salary of $18.5M in 2011, an extension might be presumed to be closer to Crawford’s zip code.

I don’t doubt that GMs needing offense/OF have enquired about Beltran, but either the fear of what it will take to waive the NTC, or the price expected by Alderson in return hasn’t seemed to have fostered a thriving market for Beltran.

My Guess

is that the 2 years may have been appealing to Jenks. Presumably, he still sees himself as a closer, a job he won’t have in Boston. The longer he goes without being a closer, the less likely he’ll be viewed as one the next time he’s a FA. First and foremost, we need a 3B who can hit. Secondly, it would really help the Angels in the near future if they could learn how to get along with Boras, since both Weaver and Morales belong to him.

A career average over 162 games of:

.275 average
25 homeruns
80 runs
90 rbi
10 sb (granted these are unlikely)

and gold glove defense….

doesn’t seem synonymous with “waste” to me. save the “two big years BS”.. If you are going to ignore his best two years then toss his worst two years and these numbers will be similar.

Should the Angels just forget about 2011 and rebuild for 2012/2013?

I know this isn’t going to be popular here, but I feel the Angels have to at least consider trying to dangle Dan Haren to a desperate Yankees team (If Haren would accept) and see if they will offer Montero and other good prospects/cheap young players that can be used to build around Mike Trout in a few years.

I want to remain optimistic, but realistically even if the Angels sign Beltre they still need either a new productive LF or a big bounce back season from Juan Rivera as well as improvements from Aybar and Howie to catch the Rangers and now possibly even Oakland. They also need Weaver to repeat his 2010 season and hope that Morales is the same player he was prior to his injury. It would also help if Mathis got injured again so Napoli could get more AB’s. I just feel that too much has to go right for the Angels to win the AL West in 2011.

I had a comment a few days ago that pretty much reflected a similar sentiment.

We’re not a contending team until we bolster our lineup. And I don’t think Beltre is going to singlehandedly do that. And that’s even if we get him. :/

Beltre, plus getting Kendry back, plus playing Naps full time, plus a stronger bullpen, plus a full year of Haren, is.

Question for Subop

About a week ago you said you were working on a post titled “Don’t Cry Over Carl Crawford,” or something to that effect. Is that still in the works?

If I stay within my mechanics, I can turn the corner and build upon this success.

by The_Question on Dec 16, 2010 6:04 PM PST reply actions

Off-topic, I realize

If I stay within my mechanics, I can turn the corner and build upon this success.

by The_Question on Dec 16, 2010 6:06 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah...

A few weeks ago I wrote 3000+ words arguing against a nine-figure investment in Carl Crawford. I wasn’t happy with part of the argument and sat on it too long. Now it’s the end of the semester here, which means grading exams and breaking undergraduate hearts in the process.

Anyways, I don’t think people really want to hear about the perils of Carl Crawford after it went down so ugly. Understandably, we don’t care about out payroll situation in 2017 yet. All we see is more Abreu/Rivera/Willits in left field. Willingham was probably the last realistic option for a short-term upgrade. Beltran is purely hypothetical at this point. Ordonez would have been risky, and Damon might not be able to play the field anymore.

So in other words, when I start rewriting “Don’t Cry Over Carl Crawford” (probably this weekend), it’s going to read more like a reflection than a recommendation. The Angels’ current predicament has been fulminating for a few years now, and it might take a similarly long period of time to resolve.

haha no

they weren’t there, unfortunately.

it was a cross between me putting up some photos of things and places I shouldn’t have been in, along with some bullshit about the season ticket holders complaining. It really was completely understandable.

it just bummed me out because I tried to get some good shots knowing I was going to put them up on here, not to mention the hours I spent on the fanpost. oh well though, I’m still lucky I got to do it. plus I plan on posting some of the pics down the line, kind of like I did with the one jumping at the wall.

Btw, I just realized, man

You are in the “October ’09 club” (as I call it) too, with me, DOV and Nate. We all joined HH in October of 09 during the playoffs. I think there is one or two more as well—like Quad Fin Rider or something. Most of these guyshere go waaay back together to before ’08, though they all started on HH at the same time: March 08.

what brought you here? for me it was the fact that HH was linked to the Yahoo homepage for the Halos. I started coming here every morning for the halolinks.

simply don’t value Willingham’s defense very highly. I know this was discussed by others on another post, but it’s seems pretty obvious here, because Willingham’s offensive numbers were solid and consistent.
