Russell Martin to the Red Sox?
I was just on mlbtraderumors.com and there was an interesting story about the possibility of Russell Martin being traded by the Doyers. It was mentioned that the Red Sox have had previous interest in him and it got my wheels spinning in my head. Imagine this nightmare scenario:
1) the Dodgers trade martin with a prospect(s) to bawston for Jacoby Ellsbury
2) the sux sign Carl Crawford to play left.
Then there we are again standing on the sidelines like a bunch of putzes scratching our heads trying to figure out what happened. As payback we'll probably overpay for Beltre as a way to "stick-it-to-them" while they move Kevin Youkilis to third and probably get Adrian Gonzalez. I hope this doesn't happen but the writing might be on the wall.

They are not going to get Adrian Gonzalez
HE is too cheap for the Padres to trade until they are out of contention – even the draft picks he represents as a free agent might mean more to the Pads then what he would yield them in a trade.
I would not be surprised if Texas signs Lee
Beltre goes somewhere crazy and we get absolutely nothing.
Not one bit of shock will be emitted from my anus.
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
Honestly though
If your anus could emit shock, you’d probably have a lot more things to worry about/be happy about.

It would not be a surprise....
If Lee went back to Texas,
Crawford goes to the Yanks,
Werth to the Red Sox,
and Beltre to the A’s.
I really hope I’m wrong.
It can't be a good thing if the entire MLB nation (fans, players, FO)
know the angels are absolutely desperate to sign CC.
This lack of leverage concerns me. kind of.
What do you need a fancy suit for, Charlie, you ain't got no job to wear it to.
But just think how happy some will be that Arte kept the payroll low......
…he’ll have all that money to spend on future free agents…..
I see some big questions in the scenario you think might happen
- Why would the Dodgers want Jacoby Ellsbury? They already have a leadoff hitter in Furcal?
- Why would Boston take Martin, who has become worse every year at the plate over Napoli if we made him available?
I don’t see this happening mostly because, Boston wouldn’t make such a move unless they were POSITIVE they were going to land Crawford and that Crawford would be willing to play CF instead of LF.
A much more likely scenario is Boston opens up their wallets and lands Werth and Beltre and signs Scott Downs while the Angels sign Crawford and Soriano and trade Kendrick, Trumbo and prospects for a 3B.

why would Boston want
CC to play CF when they don’t even want Elsbury to play there?

Exactly. So why would they trade Ellsbury to the Dodgers for Russell Martin?
As good as Crawford is, he’s been a LF his whole career, there’s no point in transitioning to CF at age 30. Werth can’t play CF either. So if they did this trade, they’d be dependent on Mike Cameron or Ryan Kalish. Kalish is more of a corner OF and Cameron’s in his late 30’s.

what do you mean "exactly"?
Elsbury plays LF for them, so if they traded him and signed CC, why would CC then have to play CF?

Ellsbury also plays CF for them. When healthy, you can expect to see a healthy dose of Ellsbury out there.
If they don’t have Ellsbury, they’d be forced to choose between Crawford, Kalish and Cameron for CF. Kalish should be headed back for AAA, Cameron’s constantly hurt and Crawford is a LF.
I meant exactly as in Boston wouldn’t send Crawford out there to CF, and I don’t see them dealing Ellsbury unless they got another CF in return.

A few possible answers
1. Perhaps the Dodgers feel that Furcal if too fragile to count on for a full season, and want another option at leadoff. Plus, if the team has soured on Kemp and wants to trade him, they may view Ellsbury as a replacement.
2. Perhaps a Boston coach has looked at Martin and thinks that he can fix him.
3. Perhaps Napoli is not viewed by Boston as readily available, or they prefer Martin + other prospect to just Napoli.
If I stay within my mechanics, I can turn the corner and build upon this success.

That still doesn't answer their CF issue.
While they prefer Ellsbury play LF because it’s less demanding, he has the range, glove and arm for CF, so when healthy he plays there more often than not. They really don’t have anything for sure behind him. Cameron looks at the field and goes on the DL at this stage of his career and Kalish, well let’s not get into it, suffice it to say he’s more than likely headed back to AAA and isn’t looked at as a CF anymore than Carl Crawford is.

They only have Furcal for a year.
And Theo has openly praised Martin. And the Boston fan base has been talking about this all week.
Boston wouldn’t need to be positive that they were going to sign Crawford, because they could still obtain Werth. Meanwhile they have Drew, Cameron and Kalish in reserve. And will probably pick up some other tidbit along the way.
Perfectly plausible scenario — also likely to be completely speculative. Not what you want, certainly, but I think you’re looking at more from an Angel fan perspective than from a Theo Epstein perspective.
It still doesn't address who would play CF.
What good is it having Crawford/Werth, Drew, Cameron and Kalish? That’s a bunch of corner OF. Kalish is headed back to AAA and reports indicate his future is in LF or RF, Cameron’s too old, Crawford won’t be transitioning to CF late in his career, Drew certainly couldn’t and neither could Werth.
A year from now, sure it might happen, Kalish might be ready to step up to the majors full time, handle CF and contribute in a month other than September. Then they’d be fine trading Ellsbury for Martin. In the mean time it doesn’t make sense for Boston, not when they seem so willing to give Salty a chance behind the plate and there are other FA catchers who wouldn’t cost any talent in return.
Rod Barajas, Gerald Laird, Bengie Molina, Miguel Olivo, AJ Pierzynski, Jason Varitek. That’s a lot of options they can explore before they lose Ellsbury for a catcher who’s offense may not be any better than their current unproven kid.

Doesn't your logic (which I don't disagree with) undercut your Napoli-4-Ellsbury thesis?
I recall bringing up the who-plays-CF-in-2012 issue before when you were thumping the tub for Ellsbury. Seems to me the only way Boston does it is if they truly believe Kalish is an answer out there.
I've already admitted NApoli for Ellsbury is a pipe dream.
I mean yeah I’d love to see it happen, but it’s probably not going to.
As far as Martin goes, my biggest issue isn’t even who plays CF really. It’s the fact that if the Red Sox are interested in Martin, clearly they aren’t overly concerned with offense from the catching position, because Martin doesn’t provide a whole lot of it. So if they are more concerned with a veteran defender, there are many cheaper options in FA right now that wouldn’t cost Ellsbury.
That’s the part that really doesn’t make sense (to me).

wouldn't that be the perfect fit

Yeah guys like Werth and AJ just seem to fit there.
Just like Jeter, Arod and Tex fit in New York.

werth changes the conversation and he seems more like a boston guy but...
this is fun to see if anybody bites the hook on an enticing post. martin could do better in boston because of (i’m sifting through my grab bag of baseball shorthand) he’s a right handed and the green monster caters to his swing (open the floodgates to spray charts from another poster) and he could do well in boston because (sifting through my general sports cliche grab bag) of change of scenery.
That rumor stems from the Boston Herald, which is full of...
whatever is stuck up PhiSlamma’s anus and spitting out shock. ; )

I feel we need to sign a Boras client this off-season...
Just so we know that Ninja + Arte can actually work with him. Especially since Weaver and K-Mo are his clients.

He was a 35 year-old rookie last season!
Well, the good news is that he’s a left-handed relief pitcher. The less-than-good news is that his ERA was 3.61 with a 1.31 WHIP, and also that the Halos are allegedly signing him to a multi-year deal.
This would be the big break-through signing we’ve all been waiting for!!!
This is it

trades
Napoli and Kemp and Ellsburry will all stay put—Martin may go to Sox—Angels or Dodgers need Beltre—Angels need Soriano or maybe even H Bell from the Padres—Who is the Dodger Closer?—Both teams need offense
