Yep gotta love a guy who is sooo good, he is forced to take a minor league deal at age 33

All Im saying is I hope the BEST 25 players are on our roster. This jackass better not get a job because he hit .344 in 160 AB in 2004. If he is gonna hit .240 something like the last few years, and gets a job over a guy like evans, I’m gonna be pissed.

Well, I think the reason for doin' a minor league deal is

that you don’t have to put him on the 25-man. You can still cycle him up if folks go on the DL.

But yeah, I think ‘The Limey’ and ‘htm’ are on the money. Scioscia got a man-love thing with ’Q’s’ .994 career defense.

In all honesty, it's not a bad idea

This just means the out of options guys will work harder and we have at least a semi-decent backup at the corners.

I wasn’t completely sold on the idea of our backup infield plan being Izturis and then SLC. Mighty Mouse can only play one position at a time, no mater how mighty he is.

by Commander_Nate on Feb 11, 2010 4:10 PM PST reply actions

It's a fucking GREAT idea.

It’s a minor league deal so you don’t have to put him on the opening day 25-man if everybody is healthy and you’re squeezed for spots.

If Wood, Izturis, Aybar, Kendrick or Morales go on the DL, and New Young Guy throws-up all over himself tryin’ to fill in, you call up Q – who can always play good defense and won’t embarrass himself at the plate.

You can cycle him up and down to SLC as needed. The minors contract comes with options.

If he’s not needed by mid-season he’s probably got an opt-out. He can go find work with a team that needs help.

Net cost for the insurance: damn-near nada.

This is smart. This is NOT the Mets.

Here's my guess

Since Mike likes Q, and Q is effectively at the end of his career, this is all about getting Q his pension (I believe he needs 1 more year), then making him a coach in the organization.

I hope Q mashes

For Salt Lake City.

If the Angels go with 11 pitchers, they have 14 spots:
C Mathis, Napoli
IF Wood, Izturis, Kendrick, Aybar, Morales
OF Abreu, Hunter, Rivera, Matsui

Willits would have one of the spots, Bobby Wilson probably gets one since he’s out of options. That leaves one spot. I’d prefer to give it to a younger guy who has the potential to develop into a decent bench player, like Sandoval or Pettit. But it looks like Q could win this spot.

He was once a nice bat against a LHP, but the last 3 years has done nothing well. Can’t hit, no power, can’t run, and can’t field. But at least he can’t field at 4 different positions.

The HK-47 hitting droid is the finest line drive machine ever built

by RallyMonkey5 on Feb 11, 2010 6:26 PM PST reply actions

You're forgetting some

Right now we are carrying 12 pitchers assuming Shields is ready for opening day. There is also Terry Evans who is also out of options. Hopefully we will send Q and Reggie back to Salt Lake until they are needed instead of losing Wilson or Evans to free agency. Unless there is an injury, I don’t see anyway that Sandoval or Pettit can make the 25 man roster.

Starting 8 position players plus the DH: 9
Starting Pitchers: 5
Relievers: 7
Jepson, Bulger, Shields, Fuentes, Rodney, Stokes, Palmer
Available Bench Spots: 4
Players likely: Mathis, Izzy, Wilson (No options), Evans (No options), Willits, and Quinlan..: 6. we will need to shed 2 players

by Higz on Feb 12, 2010 9:32 AM PST up reply actions

I am 100% completely against this!

Why? Because we know Scioscia. He’ll DH Maicer and bat him 3rd if it means getting him into the lineup. He’ll keep Wood down in SLC (can’t anymore) just to get Q in the lineup. He’ll turn a switch hitting, young power 1B into a half time player just in order to get Q in there. Mike has proven time and again, he’ll sacrifice whatever it takes to have Rob Quinlan in the lineup.

The Angels resigning Quinlan means less opportunity for Wood and potentially less AB’s for Kendry. On top of which, Q doesn’t provide anything, anywhere where we aren’t already set. If you want Q at 3B there’s already Wood, followed by Izturis, followed by Sandoval who has mashed in AAA and in an emergency, Aybar. If you think Q’s needed at 1B, think again, we have Morales, followed by Wood, and Sandoval and Wilson have also logged considerable PT at 1B. If you think Q helps in the corner OF think again. We still have Matsui backing up Rivera and Abreu, followed by Willits, then Evans, then Pettit, and Bourjos and Trumbo.

I promise you, Scioscia is going to find a way to make Quinlan a bench player for the Angels and eat into Wood and Morales’ AB’s.

by Halowood on Feb 11, 2010 7:06 PM PST reply actions

I would rather see any combo of:

Pettit, Evans, Willits, Bourjos, Trumbo, Conger or Sandoval in the game before I’d want Rob Quinlan in there. This lump should have been outright released two years ago, but no instead he’s been taking a spot away from better, younger players for a while now. Just because he was signed to a minor league contract does not mean Scioscia will send him down to AAA.

Makes me angry.

by Halowood on Feb 11, 2010 7:10 PM PST up reply actions

I concur. 100%.

This plays directly into the one glaring weak spot that Sosh has as a manager. Anybody who fails to recognize this is in complete denial. Steve Finley killed us. Shea Hillenbrand killed us. Jeff-friggin’-Weaver single-handedly cost us the playoffs in 2006. Hell, even as recent as this past playoff he had a drowning Juan Rivera going unnoticed.

Brandon Wood is 25 years old with only 224 AB’s. If Sosh didn’t have his hand forced with Figgy’s contract expiration year and Wood running out out of options, we KNOW that this would not have changed for 2010.

Wood has been our top prospect for how many years now? The kid is aging before our eyes and, as an asset, we are losing value. How many trades for critical upgrades elsewhere were nixed because the Halos felt that it was important to protect Wood? But what were we protecting him for? Platooning with Robb Quinlan??? We lost chances at premier players because we want to platoon with Robb Quinlan? We are going to lose consistent AB’s for our stud prospect because we want to platoon Robb Quinlan? WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF??

by Stirrups on Feb 11, 2010 7:51 PM PST up reply actions

I am strictly against...

Any move that prevents Wood and Morales from playing just about everyday. Resigning Maicer was necessary but still unfortunate as he will take AB’s away from Wood and Kendrick. But resigning Quinlan is the WORST move we’ve made so far.

by Halowood on Feb 11, 2010 10:33 PM PST up reply actions

Have we thought about what this does to Wilson and Evans?

Only room for 25:

9 starters
Izturis, Mathis, Willits, Quinlan
5 rotation starters
Fuentes, Shields, Rodney, Jepson, Bulger, Stokes, Palmer

It means bye bye Evans and Wilson. Scioscia’s not going to keep Evans around when he just loves to put Q out in the corner OF, despite the fact that I’m better defensively in the OF than Q and I was never drafted. On top of which Wilson won’t be needed as Naps won’t DH and Wilson won’t be needed for backup 1B with Wood and Scioscia’s love child Q.

Th underlying meaning to this move is: Scioscia prefers Quinlan over Terry Evans and Bobby Wilson, so much that he’s willing to eat into Brandon Wood and Kendry Morales’ opportunities just to ensure Q’s spot.

DISGUSTING.

by Halowood on Feb 11, 2010 10:39 PM PST up reply actions

Yep. I have thought about that.

It was just the other day when we were discussing the chances and choices surrounding all those guys and how they had their chances to fit onto the 25 man. Just that quick, Sosh has a way to bypass all that opportunity.

by LAASurfin on Feb 12, 2010 11:06 AM PST up reply actions

I don't buy any of it.

Your entire premise assumes an ignorance exists within Angels management that I’ve not seen evidence for. What possible benefit would team management be trying to get from “blocking” a high-upside, “proven ready” prospect? The prospect just has to be better than the alternatives.

Do you really give that little credit for horse-sense to the folks who brought up the likes of Aybar, Kendrick and Morales? Do you really expect that Scioscia makes all decisions in a vacuum – with no input from his bosses about protecting team investments? Seems illogical based on the team’s dedication to winning over the past 8 or 9 years.

If Q was going to be guaranteed a roster spot he would have been tendered a major league contract. He was not. The ball is in Sandoval’s court mitt. Steps have been taken to insure the best possible team (for the money) is fielded regardless of injury or prospect disappointment.

"Sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."

by LAASurfin on Feb 12, 2010 11:04 AM PST up reply actions

You are correct.

My premise assumes that there is something amiss in the Halo FO. BUT, it is something that I HAVE seen evidence for. I stated my evidence in the other thread: Finley/Hillenbrand/Jeff Weaver. Or a Brandon Wood that is probably still 2 seasons away from full productivity when we need him at that level NOW. A love for vets/faves despite clear and present value is the one weakness of Mike Scioscia.

And my evidence for the REAL value of Q, versus the PERCEIVED value placed on Q by the Halo FO, comes from Q’s own recent adventures in the FA market. That would be the one where Q failed to secure an MLB contract from ANY OTHER club. NOT ONE. 29 other GM’s. 29 other coaching staffs. 29 other scouting departments. 29 other FO staffs. The vast majority of them is far more deparate straights to secure MLB talent than the Halos. Yet All of them had no interest in the services of Q. That’s hundreds of opinions against. Only 1 group saw things some other way. Ours.

So, yeah, I assume some level of problem exists within the Angels management, and I HAVE seen the evidence. It is just that I would not call it ignorance.

"God watches over drunks and third baseman." - the Immortal Leo Durocher, predicting the coming of Brandon Wood...

by Stirrups on Feb 12, 2010 11:19 AM PST up reply actions   1 recs

Nope.

I’m not going to be drawn into a “Q is great” argument.

There were actually 30 teams that refused to sign Q to a major league contract. Angels included.

Why do you so carefully disregard that (huge) distinction? You have a belief here that you WANT to hold on to. Okay. Do so.

That leaves only your perception that “Scioscia prefers vets”. You’ll likely pardon me if I prefer his, Tony’s and the rest of management’s ability to judge the readiness of talent, no?

"Sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."

by LAASurfin on Feb 12, 2010 11:47 AM PST up reply actions

The reason why you feel I am confused about A MINOR LEAGUE CONTRACT

is because the last time I checked…

A MINOR LEAGUE CONTRACT…does not prevent the club from inviting Q to ST.
A MINOR LEAGUE CONTRACT…does not prevent the club from having Q take reps at infield practice…at the expense of somebody else.
A MINOR LEAGUE CONTRACT…does not prevent the club from having Q take reps at batting practice…at the expense of somebody else.
A MINOR LEAGUE CONTRACT…does not prevent the club from taking AB’s in ST games…at the expense of somebody else.
A MINOR LEAGUE CONTRACT…does not prevent the club from putting in innings at 1B and 3B and even LF during ST games…at the expense of somebody else.
And
A MINOR LEAGUE CONTRACT…does not prevent the club from upgrading Q to a MAJOR LEAGUE CONTRACT at any time…at the expense of somebody else.

So, all 29 other teams refused to put themselves in a position to promote him to the major league club. The Halos appear to be still holding hope…at the expense of somebody else.

So hiding behind that minor league contract at this point in the preseason is a waste of time. And taking comfort in some notion that it being a minor league contract makes this event risk-free is a mistake.

Well...

the point of Weaver/Finley/Hillenbrand was not about blocking up and comers. It was about overplaying a losing hand.

In Finley’s case, Figgins was the clear and easy option for better productivity. In Hillenbrand’s case, the clear option, though far less easy, would have been to move Vlad to DH and put Willits in RF. Willits’ line kicked Hillendbrand’s ass.

"God watches over drunks and third baseman." - the Immortal Leo Durocher, predicting the coming of Brandon Wood...

by Stirrups on Feb 14, 2010 9:04 PM PST up reply actions

The problem is your not looking at what else happened in the season

Figgins starts that Season:
3rd – 48
MacPherson only played 68 games that year
CF – 45
Finley only played 109 games that year
2nd – 36
Kennedy only played 129 Games that year
LF/RF – 20
Spelling Anderson & Vlad

So no it not as easy as Figgins was clearly better & should of played centerfield.

Willits started 118 games in 2007
LF – 57
Anderson only played 108 games
RF – 23
Vlad only played 109 games in the field
CF – 24
Matthews played 133 Game
DH – 14

He was already in the line up almost every day. Hillenbrand only got 204 at bats with Angels. He had a track record of performing. Management gave him 50 games to show something before he was shipped off

So again my statement stands

Finley & Hillenbrand did suck, but they did have better track records than the other options on the teams at the time they played.

Statistically speaking, re-signing Q will hurt HH posters far more than his being on the team

Our ability to make ever more snarky comments about Q’s unbelievably inept hitting, fielding & base running abilities will only decline with further exposure:

I take it there's no side 2 to this graph

and it’s not a bell shaped curve……

Is there any way we can make a connection between this move and how many times Scioscia’s gonna give the company line “we like what we got”.

My first thought when I saw your Quinlan Sarcasm graph . . . .

. . . . . was that Scottnak had charted it up. Good work Quad Fin Rider!

Oh good. He can platoon with Morales and Wood.

Give those guys some needed rest. Remember when Kotchman said something like, I’m 25, I don’t need any days off. That was funny. But really, I’m not worried about Q taking away playing time from our young’ns.

Welcome Rodney, Matsui, Piniero, Stokes, and WOOD!

You mean Morales and Wood can platoon with Q...

Q is a star, dont try to hide him in the shadows of that cuban whats-his-name who got lucky last year and some minor league kid named dick wood. Q is the starter, the other guys will have to fight it out for playing time and the best guy will get to play.
Yours truly,
Mike Scoscia
