Interesting...
Aybar will make $2.o5 million this season with $50,000 bonuses for 575 plate appearances and 625 plate appearances.
According to the OC Register, Aybar will actually be paid money and the letter “o”. This has to be a negotating first by The Ninja.

Professors love it when you:
1. laugh at loud in their class but not at their jokes
2. text or read blog postings in the middle of a lecture/discussion/test
3. have difficulty spelling the class name
But, oh well, at least it’s about the Angels!

Yeah, it's an odd situation.
Mathis asked for the league minimum because he knows he blows. The team offered $10m because Sosh wants to blow him. Mathis thought it would be highway robbery for the team to pay him that much, so he’s sticking with his original ask of the league minimum. Sosh convinced Reagins to double the offer. So, it’s $20m if the team wins or the league minimum if Mathis wins.
This will be very interesting to watch.
Glad he's signed
But that’s interesting: His agent was asking $2.75M and the club was offering $1.8M. Midpoint, the common ‘workout’ amount, would have been $2.275M yet they settled at $2.05M.
I wonder if there was talk of a buy-out next off-season if he has another good year? Maybe his case was not strong enough as a first-year arb player? Whatever the case, it’s likely better than the animosity that is frequently seeded in a hearing.
"Sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."
Ya, I'm guessing his agent was concerned that the Angels had a stronger case.
Kinda surprised it wasn’t the midpoint though.
I thought he had a pretty good argument for up to $3M
There’s are some pretty good comps on his side. I especially thought he had an argument after Izzy, who is essentially Aybar’s backup, got $2.76M for 2010.
Was his first arb year though and was supported by only one really strong year. I’m guessing that if he has a 2010 anywhere similar to his 2009 he gets a sweet buy-out deal next year.
It is something to keep in mind: This year’s team payroll is going to be right at $120M – highest ever. And, 7 of the 8 guys eligible for arbitration this off-season are eligible AGAIN next off-season. PLUS K-Mo becomes eligible for arb too. If these guys have great years (and I/we hope they do….) it’s gonna get REEEAL expensive to run this team.

I really wouldn't mind letting him walk if we can.
however he will get a raise probably based off of the playoffs this last year where he did well.

I thought arbitration was based on the last two years.
And nobody parts ways after an arbitration hearing. However, it does go a long way into the player’s mind when free agency looms.
I love this team.

so basically no matter what they have to come to an agreement one way or another since he can't hit the open market for a couple more years??

To play Devil's Advocate
His ALCS performance, especially in Game 3 ensured the Angels got the maximum amount of home games they could have from the ALCS. Game 5 alone, secured by his Game 3 performance, likley made the Angels a nice pile of cash. I’d guess at least several hundred thousand.
I would argue that if I was his agent.

If I had to argue against the agent
I would say that if Jeff Mathis was a better baseball player, like say, Joe Mauer, then the Angels would have won more regular-season games than the Yankees and had home field in the ALCS. Which would have taken the bandbox advantage away from the Yankees, leading the Angels to the World Series and four easy wins over the Phillies.
And I think the counter would be
“Well then he’d be asking for a Joe Mauer-sized contract. He’s not, he’s asking for $1.3 million.”
I’m not arguing on behalf of Mathis here, I’m just a little bit fascinated by the whole contrivance that is the MLB arbitration system.
"Sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."
The counter would also be
His performance this postseason actually happened, what could have or should have happened did not. He should be paid based on what actually happened.
I think he deserves a modest bump because of the ALCS alone. He and the FO were like less than $500k apart, which in today’s baseball world isn’t jack. I don’t know how he and the team weren’t able to come to some sort of agreement.

Yeah, but the part of Suboptimal's argument that Mathis was terrible all year is something that happened, too.
Negative performance is something that actually happens, just as positive performance is.
Yeah
I’m just being difficult like agents (lawyers) always are. ;)
