$1.3 million?!?
For a .596 OPS last year and below-average defense? Why don’t I get rewarded like that for being bad at my job?

Before the cock crows three times...
Mathis will finish ’10 with more innnings behind the plate than Napoli
Not surprised, I wonder if Mathis's agent brought up the agreement Napoli reached with the Angels
Seems like it could be effective, since Napoli isn’t 5 times better than Mathis.
Napoli's batting WAR was actually 31 times better than Mathis's
And Napoli is in his second year of arbitration too.
Angels screwed up
$1.3 million is too much but $700k was clearly way too low. If the Angels had submitted a higher number to the arbiter…say $950k, I think they would have stood a much better chance. As it stood though, $1.3 million was more appropriate than $700k.
Agree.
I don’t think you can “get away with” paying an MLB catcher that has averaged 725 innings over the last two seasons $700K. Begs the response “Well, if he’s so bad why do you play him so much?”.
Arbitrator can only choose the high or the low number – nothing in between – leaving no real choice.

as bad as he was in the regular season, he was also a playoff demon.

Unless Mathis actually pulls his weight in 2010
The Angels will have no choice but to non-tender him after the end of the season. There’s no way to justify giving a raise on a $1.3 million salary to a guy who hits .200, especially with better options waiting in the minor leagues.
I love how we all (MYSELF INCLUDED) ...
consider it a foregone conclusion that Mathis will resume batting .200 in 2010.
I love this team.
