Secret to his fancy footwork on defense?

That remains the only World Series game the San Diego Padres have ever won. No doubt Tommy Lasorda preferred Kurt Bevacqua’s 1984 WS Game 1 base-running gaffe. Leading off in the bottom of the seventh Bevacqua doubled into the right field corner. Bevacqua attempted to stretch it into a triple, stumbled rounding second base, and was thrown out at third base by Kirk Gibson. I was sitting in the 6th row of the field boxes near third base. On that play Bevacqua, third baseman Marty Castillo and Gibson’s throw were framed perfectly. In the middle of the ninth inning Cleveland Indians owner Gabe Paul (sitting in the row in front of me) got up, announced the game was over because the Tigers had Willie Hernandez in the bullpen and left to beat the traffic. The Tigs didn’t need Hernandez to close the game as Jack Morris proceeded to retire the last eight batters in a row. I doubt that Paul would have left early if his Indians were in the World Series. Kurt Bevacqua was hit by a pitch five times in his career. He was never hit more than once in a season.
