Angels Announce Non-Roster Invitees

The Angels announced their Spring Training Non-Roster Invitees who will be joining the 40-Man Roster in Tempe, Arizona later this month.

LEFTIES: Trevor Reckling, Will Smith, Andrew Taylor

RIGHTIES: Ryan Brasier, Travis Chick, Ryan Chaffee, Tyler Chatwood, Michael Kohn, Tommy Mendoza, Kevin Nabors, Francisco Rodriguez

INFIELD:
Alexi Amarista, Ryan Mount, Efren Navarro, Abel Nieves, Gary Patchett, Andrew Romine, Hainley Statia, Nate Sutton

OUTFIELD:
Cory Aldridge, Brad Coon, Jeremy Moore, Michael Ryan

CATCHERS: Hank Conger, Anel de los Santos, Alberto Rosario, Brian Walker

LINK TO THE STORY...

Incidentally, the team's 40-Man roster currently stands at 38.

With the above 27 invitees, made up almost exclusively of Angels minor leaguers, who among the 65 chosen will be on the 25-Man opening day roster?

Which of these 65 will make the 25 man roster?

There’s not much room;
CATCHERS: You add 4 more above to the current list of Napoli, Mathis, Budde, and Wilson. Answer? NONE. In fact, at least one of the guys I named above will likely be DFA’d or traded at close of ST.
PITCHERS: Starters are set (Kazmir, Weaver, Saunders, Santana, Pineiro). Bullpen seems set (Rodney, Fuentes, Shields, Palmer, Bulger, Jepsen). Answer? NONE. Thompson probably has the best chance to make the 25 man roster.
INFIELD: With Kowbell, HK, Akbar, Mice Tits, and Woodie, there’s an opening for a back-up. That’s is probably andoval’s to lose. Answer? Probably NONE.
OUTFIELD/DH: Rivera, Hunter, Abreu, and Matsui leave room for possibly 2 openings. My guess is Willits owns one of these spots. The other spot will likely be won by Evans or Pettit. The answer again is probably NONE.

Short of a rash of injuries, trades, or “light out” spring training, I don’t see any of these guys making the 25 man roster coming out of spring training. In fact, I can’t even imagine any of them getting a serious chance.

Brian Stokes.

OK…I’m squinting real hard and doing my best to channel the thoughts of the best manager in baseball. And…yes…I had put him below Thompson, but I should probably consider him even or slightly ahead of Thompson.

If he shows poorly at spring training...

he’s DFA’d. Stokes is not guaranteed a roster spot.

I love this team.

Hard to ay but I think position wise it we will have another pitcher added for sure

The Horses font feet have cleared the huddle and as time slows it is also time for the back feet to clear and for us to declare victory!!!!! GO COLTS!!!

Who knows, they wont play much anyway.

Pitchers:
1. Weaver
2. Kaz
3. Saundo
4. Erv
5. Pinata

Infield
6. Morales
7. HK 47
8. Izzy
9. Aybar
10.Woodsy

Outfield
11. Abreu
12. Hunter
13. Johnny Rivers
14. Matsui

Catchers
15. Naps
16. Mathis

Bullpen
17. Fuentes
18. Shields-y
19. Rodney
20. Jepsen
21. Stokes
22. Bulger
23. Palmer – ??

It seems like we got two spots open on the bench. Soth usually goes 7 in the bullpen if I remember correctly, so I imagine Palmer, unless he has a horrible pre-season will claim that spot. Although, I guess some prospect could swipe it from him (Mosenbach? Thompson?)

So, I feel like the question is, who makes those last two spots. I think many will think it will be some sort of combination of Willits/Evans or Willits/Wilson

Looking at the above roster, though; we have only one backup infielder in Woodsy and/or Izzy. Is that enough?

I predict Willits will make it. As for roster spot # 25. I have no idea.

I don't see Palmer being beaten out but who really ever knows.

As far as backups in the infield, we only have one as either Wood, or Izzy will be the starting 3rd baseman. but we do have wood/izzy, and kendrick who can easily move around in the infield to give someone a rest.

I think (for sure want) evans makes it as I see more potential there.

I dont think there is much potential in Evans...

Mediocre speed with average power. Meh…nothing to write home about.

Also, the more I think about it, I am not worried with having one back up infielder. Izzy can play all positions in the IF except 1B. And as proven last year, Wood is going to see time at 1b. So when someone needs a day off or aint feeling so hot we can re-organize the infield enough to suit our needs accordingly.

As for Palmer, you have to take into consideration his track record and his age. Sure, he had a great season last year but he could easily come in this year and throw gas cans.

Maybe I was off a bit with my Evans statement....

still the guy is 27 and played in the PCL.. i.e.: rather old for a prospect and played in an power-inflated league.

It will probably be Willits and Evans

You don’t really need to carry three catchers or more than one back up infielder at a time. It’s not that hard to pick up the phone and call someone up from SLC who is on the 40-man roster if you need to.

Willits will be the primary pinch runner and he and Evans will probably be late-inning replacements and maybe get some starts. That’s my guess anyway.

That means we lose both Budde and Wilson

they are both out of options.

theres really no need

for a 30 year old catcher who is 3rd on the depth chart in Triple-A

Conger will be starting in Triple-A next year and Wilson will either be in the MLB or with another team, unless no one claimed him and then he would go back to AAA

and im pretty sure no one would claim Budde who has a career .234 Avg .301 OBP .374 SLG in the minor leagues, and now that i think about it why do we still have him?

Budde is such a waste...

I’m glad he’ll finally be gone from our system. I swear he must of been someones nephew in the Angels organization to stick around this long. I have friends who posted better numbers than him and got cut in double A….

Perhaps for his Defense?

I don’t know if his D is any good, but that’s the only thing left to justify him given those batting stats. Maybe he’s just really good with the pitchers. Or maybe they like having an experienced catcher in the minors to help teach the kids.

If we're talking 40 man, I fully expect the Angels to lose Evans and Wilson. So there's room for 4 more.

Those 4, anyone’s guess. Names I’m throwing out there are Reckling, Conger, Kohn and Mendoza. Apparently Trumbo and Bourjo are already on the 40 man roster. As for the 25, it should be interesting, but I don’t expect any changes next year outside of Rich Thompson and Hank Conger being added to it.

by Halowood on Feb 3, 2010 3:24 PM PST reply actions

uhhh...Conger isnt making the 25...

Thompson has a tough road ahead of him as well. He basically has to beat out Matt Palmer.

Let's make it "another halo victory" for Rory...

by BryanHarvey'sMoustache on Feb 3, 2010 4:33 PM PST up reply actions

You misunderstood me

I meant Conger and Thompson in 2011. 2010’s roster is basically set. 2011 I’m figuring we’ll lose Scot Shields and Hideki Matsui. I’m guessing Napoli slides over to DH, Conger splits time with Mathis at catcher and Naps at DH, and we end up making a decision between Brian Stokes, Matt Palmer and Rich Thommpson for the final bullpen spot, as all 3 will be on the open market if not on the 25 man roster.

by Halowood on Feb 3, 2010 5:16 PM PST up reply actions

I can.

Kevin Jepson was the best reliever we had in the 2nd half of last year. He should have been the closer. Jason Bulger bailed us out more than once in the 9th inning when Fuentes couldn’t cut it.

Last year in the 2009 in HR friendly SLC Thompson (25) posted a 3.12 ERA in 43 innings and 51 K’s. In 2008 he battled injuries and in 2007 in SLC he had a 2.28 ERA. Similar success to Jason Bulger, all he needs is a chance with the Angels, which Rich Thompson is very ready for.

Last year in AAA, Rafael Rodriguez (25) posted a 1.85 ERA. The year before in AA, a 1.86 ERA. He’s ready for his shot.

Last year at Rancho, one year removed from college Michael Kohn (23) posted a 0.94 ERA, 43 K’s in only 28 innings. In Cedar Rapids he had a 2.19 ERA and had almost 15 K’s per 9 innings. He’s set for AA this next year but could find himself in the Angels pen by the end of the year. On top of which, this is only his 2nd year pitching, there’s a good chance he’s going to get a lot better.

Last year Andrew Taylor (22) posted a 1.23 ERA in Cedar Rapids with nearly 15 K’s per 9.

We also have Fernando Rodney, and in the minors Jordan Walden, Trevor Reckling, Trevor Bell, Sean O’Sullivan, Tyler Chatwood, Ryan Chaffee and Will Smith.

There’s a lot of reasons why Scot Shields won’t be coming back.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but.....

Rich Thompson is out of options isn’t he? If he doesn’t make the 25 man roster for 2010, he’s gone and won’t be around for 2011.

Willts and Evans

I say the last two spots have to go to Willits and Evans. Willits has the trust of Soth and will be the pinch runner. Evans is out of options and has solid numbers to back him up. He should get a shot at the 5th OF job. Of course, all the young OF’s will be fighting hard for it in Spring Training, so things can change. And then there’s that rumor of GA coming back to finish off as a halo….

Thompson is also out of options I think, along with Wilson and Budde. We could lose all three because I don’t see any way they all make the roster. Only reason to keep Wilson would be to get Napoli at bats at DH, but with Godzilla in the fold, that isn’t going to happen much.

Is it just me, or does a trade seem imminent? We’ve got a few guys here of decent quality that are out of options with no place to play. We need to trade them to get something back, or else we’ll lose them and get nothing in return!
