Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Dissecting the Angels Outfield

<!--StartFragment-->

Torii Hunter – In 2010 he’s going to be 34, and 2009 he proved that age is catching up to his legs.  He lost a step in the outfield, and spent considerable time on the DL.  On the other hand, Hunter was an absolute STUD offensively.  He hit well against lefties and righties, at home and away, and after recovered from injuries he was still able to hit for power.  In 2010, I expect Hunter’s numbers to go down and I expect him to spend considerable time on the DL again but still he’s going to be a solid middle of the order bat.

120 Games Played (110 CF/10 DH) .280 BA 25 DB 17 HR 12 SB .355 OBP

Bobby Abreu – He’s going to be 36 years old next season, but he’s as steady as they come.  If his body hasn’t broken down by now, I find no reason to believe it is going to.  He’s obviously not a power hitter anymore, but he’s still a great hitter and player. He should hover right around his career norms, though I do believe his OBP will go down as well as his HR and SB, but he will hit more doubles.

150 Games Played (140 RF/10 DH) .290 BA 35 DB 12 HR 25 SB .380 OBP

Juan Rivera – He saw his fair share ups and downs last season.  He proved worthy of being a starter and truly outplayed anything “experts” expected of him and especially GMJ.  Juan is going to be 31 next season, so I don’t expect his body to break down yet., though he’s never been one to last a full season.  But I do think his struggles last season weren’t a fluke.  So I expect some time on the DL, and his power numbers to go up.

110 Games Played (120 LF) .275 BA 25 DB 25 HR .340 OBP

Hideki Matsui – He’s going to be 36 next season, though I don’t believe his body is as broken down as many have let on.  He still runs better than Vladdy did.  The weather in Southern California should agree with his knees more and New York didn’t supplement his stats any.  I see his BA going up, and power going down.

130 Games Played (130 DH) .290 BA 25 DB 23 HR .370 OBP

Reggie Willits – GMJ’s departure more than likely means a significant increase in Willits playing time.  He’s in his physical prime and he has proven that when he plays consistently, he’s capable of contributing in big ways.  He’s going to get in the game and pinch run a lot and also see some time in the OF as the season progresses.  He may even leadoff quite a bit.

80 Games Played .270 BA 10 DB 0 HR 20 SB .380 OBP

Terry Evans – It’s do or die for Terry Evans and the Angels.  He’s a 5 tool player, but he’s never put it all together.  I think the Angels will give him a shot this season, to see what he’s capable of.  He won’t see much playing time, but he will be a common late inning defensive replacement as he’s the best defensive OF we have.  He will also pinch run quite a bit.

30 Games Played .270 BA 5 DB 3 HR 5 SB .300 OBP

Good write up I feel but I do disagree on Hunter.

I think his numbers will be better than what you put them at but for ONE basic reason. The reason is I don’t see any reason why he would miss 42 games?? I don’t see him spending much if any time on the DL like you do as he has never shown to be injury prone at any time in his career.

I think he will only miss 20 or 30 on DL, which is normal.

The other 10-20 games will just be Scioscia giving him the rest he needs. We have some good backup outfielders and we have an aging starting OF, I see nothing wrong with regular rest.

yea as I was typing I thought "well some of this is going to be rest also" but didn't change it.

Idk just don’t see him hitting the DL. I don’t think just cause he had a strained hammy and landed there last year tells us he will be back there. He keeps very good care of his body so his age doesn’t make me think he will be more prone to injuries.

Yes I do think we got some good backup outfielders though (not sure if they are ready to be starters at all though)

I didn't delete them

It appears HH was courteous enough to do that for me. I’m wondering if I offended someone or they don’t like my evals or predictions.

Might be a volume thing

Not sure what the reasoning was. Certainly offense had nothing to do with it.

That's fine.

I didn’t really figure on many people reading them anyway, it’s a lot to read.

Yea they were all done right. (I thought they would prompt good discussion)

Probably had something to do with you posting so many at once (in such a short time and he probably would have rather you merged some of them). Would have been nice of him to tell you rather than completely getting rid of what you had taken time to do and do well.

That's the only part that bothers me.

I mean those weren’t short writes. They took a bit of thought and time to write them down. Who decides what stays and what goes? Is that Rev?

Yes normally.

Id just email him and ask him if he could please let you know why your posts were just deleted and why you got no warning. At the least you will be able to know his reasoning (then let me know so I know)

I disagree on Hunter and Rivera

Torii had surgery to repair a sports hernia right after the World Series. According to the doctor it should free up his range of motion and allow him to perform without pain. He’s a hard worker and a leader so I wouldn’t be surprised if offensively he comes out similar to the beginning of last year. Defensivey he might actually get back a little closer to his career norms. As long as he doesn’t take too many hard hits to the wall (which is always a risk with him), I think he’ll be fine.

Rivera isn’t a health issue at all to me. As far as I remember he only spent about 8-10 days on the DL last year and that was from tripping over someone at 1B and pulling his hamstring. In his only two full seasons (‘06, ’09) he’s hit .310 and .287 respectively and set career highs in HR and RBI each year. If it weren’t for that slump at the end of ‘09 he could have been a 100 RBI man. With Vlad gone, he will probably hit a little higher in the lineup, possibly even cleanup against lefties as Lyle Spencer suggested in one of his recent articles, and have a lot more RBI opportunities. I think it’s likely he finishes somewhere in the middle of his full-season Avg. range with the same or slight increases in power. I’m thinking a line like: .295/25-30/90+.

I’m not saying either of us is right or wrong, just predicting differently for Juan and Torii.

I'd like to be so optimistic

But 34 year olds coming off of surgery don’t inspire a lot of confidence in terms of longevity. But then again this is Torii Hunter, so you never know. As far as Rivera goes, I don’t know what was going on during the last part of the year and the playoffs but he just looked BAD. It was such a long slump. I’m just not sure if it wasn’t a case of other pitchers figuring him out.

by Halowood on Feb 5, 2010 11:06 AM PST up reply actions

eh he's just streaky

I don’t see him as the type of guy you want to count on to be one of the big run producers. When he’s hot, move him up in the line up and get as much as you can. When he’s looking bad, as he did at the end of last season, move him down and hope for the best. Overall, your projections all seem pretty reasonable. And I’m sure you didn’t use any fancy formulas, either.

by dmhead on Feb 5, 2010 1:39 PM PST up reply actions

No fancy formulas.

Why not remove him from the lineup entirely until he gets hot though? I would love to see more of Pettit, Evans or Willits while Rivera struggles. Undoubtedly, when he’s right, he’s the stater and a middle of the order bat, but he was bad for such a long stretch. I know most people don’t like Willits’ style of play but it’s hard to argue with his results when he plays consistently. He hits for average, he gets on base, he steals bases and scores runs.

by Halowood on Feb 5, 2010 4:20 PM PST reply actions

It's easy to argue against Willits

His 1st half numbers in 2007 were incredible, but his 2nd half numbers were average at best. Whether that was due to his appendicitis or whatever was wrong with him, we’ll never know.n What we do know is that since July 2007 he has been a below average player. Unless he can prove any different then he should be nothing more than a Sunday starter & a pinch runner

I respectfully disagree

Willits really hasn’t received any ample opportunity to show what kind of player he really is since 2007. Occasional callups doesn’t make a players career, or shouldn’t. Otherwise Brandon Wood is screwed.

I honestly think over a full season, Willits can produce .270 25 Db 35 SB .375 OBP which is worthy of a 9 hole hitter. His defense isn’t bad though I wouldn’t catalog it as good either but it’s certainly a step up from Abreu.

I’m not ready to declare Wilits a full fledged starter but at the very least I think he deserves a fair shake if any of our current OF’s go down.
