Confusion Over Out of Options Players

I don't know about you, but I've been completely confused about which Angel players are out of options and which can still be sent to the minors.  I contacted the Angels front office and received the definite list from Jennifer Hoyer in the Angels Communications department:

Jason Bulger
Brian Stokes
Brandon Wood
Bobby Wilson
Terry Evans

I was under the impression that Rich Thompson and Ryan Budde were also on that list, but I was wrong.

This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

My guess is that Wilson becomes the odd man out.

Wood is going to get his shot, I highly doubt Bulger or Stokes goes back to SLC and we need spare outfielders more than spare catchers considering the depth we have behind the plate.

You don't think

we have outfield depth? If Evans doesn’t make the team, that still leaves Willits and Matsui on the 25 man roster as back ups and Petit and Bourjos will be in AAA waiting their turn. I’m pretty sure Sandoval can handle the outfield corners as well.

I do agree that it makes more sense to have 5 outfielders than three catchers, though. I think it will come down to which of Evans and Wilson the team is more willing to part with, since either are likely to get claimed once put on waivers. If Wilson is as good defensively as advertised, I think that means Evans is gone.

Matsui is not a viable outfield option to me

He signed his contract to be a DH and he should stay in that role. There’s no reason for him to be in the field when we have Willits, who can contribute somewhat, and Evans who is out of options and ought to get his shot. Plus all the guys you mentioned at AAA.

We need Matsui’s bat in the lineup above all else.

One thing any potential clubhouse troublemakers on our team will not have is job security.

From what I’ve heard though, Matsui is a consumate professional. I believe he will accept whatever assignment he is given without complaint.

True

I wouldn’t use Matsui in the field except emergencies. For example, Hunter is day to day and Willits is manning CF. If one of Abreu or Rivera gets injured in a game who do you put in?

In that situation, I’d stick Matsui in a COF spot and let Napoli DH.

Who do we let go?

I see this as poor planning by the management yet again.
Certainly one of these players would have value to another team.

by Barca on Feb 9, 2010 4:58 AM PST up reply actions

I agree, but it's still Feb.

Barca, I agree, it seems like we should have moved some of these players that are out of options without a roster spot available for them. But depth is a good problem to have and Opening day is still 6 weeks away. They may have already tried and failed to move these guys, but they can still build good trade value during Spring Training and get moved to teams that need to patch holes as guys get hurt in Spring. That also gives us a chance to hang on to them if we have a guy go down hurt in Spring. Until the day they get claimed by another team, we haven’t mismanaged anything.

Wilson is gone, not Evans

No way they cut Evans. He had great all around numbers at AAA last year and deserves a shot to see what he can do. Wilson has already seen the bigs and even if he D is top notch, we still don’t need him Nap and Mathis are firmly entrenched with Conger soon to work his way onto the roster. There is no need to sacrifice Evans just to keep Wilson for a handful of starts. Especially since Budde can be held in reserve in case of an injury. I thought he was out of options too, but I guess not.

I also was under the impression that Thompson was out of options, but since he isn’t and Stokes is, there is no way Thompson makes the team unless someone else goes down.

"Baseball Is Life, Life Is Baseball!" -Tim Salmon

by LeedyG on Feb 11, 2010 2:54 PM PST up reply actions

I dont see wilson or evans making the team

Budde has been higher on the catching depth charts for a while and I doubt the angels keep an inferior player on the roster just because he is out of options. Same thing for Evans. Unless he can beat out willits for the 4th OF job, I think he’ll be let go.

by Balls and Strikes on Feb 5, 2010 2:17 PM PST up reply actions

Outstanding!

Thanks for doing that ground-work. That is a useful post – for me anyway. I shared in your confusion and am ignorant of any other credible source.

So, Wilson and Evans are ‘on the bubble’. Possibly Stokes, if he fails to bring his best stuff to ST.

"Sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."

by LAASurfin on Feb 5, 2010 10:51 AM PST reply actions

My money is on Wilson/Evans to make it, w/ Palmer in AAA

Starting 9, plus Izzy/Mathis/Willits
Starting 5, plus Fuentes/Rodney/Shields/Jepsen/Bulger/Stokes….

… leaves you with just 2 spots to fill. Makes zero sense to carry 12 pitchers on a staff with 5 good starters, especially if you want to keep Palmer’s arm stretched out to be the 6th man in case of injury. If bullpen injury, then Thompson makes the squad; if rotation injury, then Palmer.

Wilson is a good enough player that you don’t want to gratuitously lose him, especially given the fragility of the catching position. Give him a first baseman’s glove in Spring Training & he’s good to go. Evans we need because the outfield is old and he seems poised for a little Davanon-style run.

If options weren’t an issue, maybe you’d keep Sandoval instead, but Conger needs to start in AAA this year, so there’s nowhere else for Wilson to go.

by mattwelch on Feb 5, 2010 12:32 PM PST reply actions

However, it always seems that

it always seems that one or two arms crap out in the spring and we (and evrybody else) winds up with 12 pitchers to start the season. In the alternative, shifting players out of AAA to fill the occasional 5th starter role.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.

My concern...

Is that our only backup IF is Macier. If he is day-to-day, and one of Wood, Aybar, and Kendrick goes down, we have nobody to play those positions. I think a second IF backup (Sandoval?) would be more valueable, than a third catcher or sixth outfielder.

It's interesting that our once vaunted middle infield depth

is no more.

Former Halos now playing elsewhere include:
Cabrera
Callaspo
Figgins
Rodriguez
Kennedy

There were legitimate reasons to move each of them, but, yes, we’re thin on the infield if an injury strikes. Most teams, however, don’t have adequate backups. The A’s don’t even have a backup SS listed on their ESPN depth chart page. The Mariners backup is listed as Cliff Pennington. The Rangers have Khalil Green, but he may be through. At least Izturis can play at a high level. I’d take Izzy over any of them.

That was completely expected, didn't you see it coming?

With Brandon Wood, Erick Aybar, Maicer Izturis, Howie Kendrick and Kendry Morales.

-Cabrera was aging and in the way of a better Aybar/Izzy/Wood combo.
-Callaspo was good, but where was he going to play?
-Rodriguez was extremely good, could have played the OF, but we needed another SP and he was the price.
-Kennedy just wasn’t that good.

by Halowood on Feb 7, 2010 11:56 AM PST up reply actions

Of course

Like I said, there were legitimate reasons to move them. But we ARE thinner now.

And don't forget Amezega!

Not sure if he’s still playing, but Alredo “Amazing” Amezega was a good glove at SS too. I’ll never forget that game against the Dodgers when the halos scored like 15 runs and Amezega was at the plate, prompting Vin Scully to announce that the Angels have had an “Amezega hits” or something like that (aka “A mess of hits”). Really reached for that one, but it was funny in the moment.

Oh, and don’t forget, Callaspo was a bad character guy. Beat his wife or something like that. Adios muchacho.

by Funke5ive on Feb 9, 2010 8:29 PM PST up reply actions

Infield Rotation

I think they’ll rotate Izzy through the infield to give guys a day off and keep everyone fresh. Each week, let him play 2 games at 2B, 1 game at SS, 2 games at 3B, and 1-2 games on the bench. Let Wood sit one day and spell Kendry at 1B on the other. That gives Kendry, Wood, and Aybar one day per week of rest, and Howie and Izzy get 1-2 days of rest each.

I think Wood is your primary back up at first base. Rivera can play there too, but I don’t think we’ll see that. Napoli has played first in the minors with good D also, so he’s an option.

But honestly, I still think we’re going to sign a veteran free agent with pop to back up first base and give Soth a power pinch hitter option. Hank Blalock anyone?

I think I asw that the Marlins are looking at Ersty. I’m sure he’s not commanding a big contract right now though, so I think he’s an affordable bench option for us. Great defensive replacement late in games at multiple positions. Fan Favorite. Reliable pinch hitter. Decent base runner. Would love to see him come back and reture a halo. Not sure if he’s worth letting one of the kids go though. I would rather keep Evans than bring back Erstad. I could take Ersty over Wilson though. We have enough catching depth to take that hit. Especially if we can trade Wilson for a good return first. Couple teams dont’ have a catcher yet. Did the Mets ever find anyone and Bengie spurned them?
