Let's play over/under!!!!

It is time to play over under folks.  I am going to post five stats, anyone who gets all 5 right knows their Angels and gets a free.......thumbs up for knowing their shit lol.  Good luck everyone.

Brandon Wood - 23 HR

Hideki Matsui - 25 HR

Erick Aybar - 30 SB

Joel Piñeiro - 4.30 ERA

Howie Kendrick - .310 BA

I am  going to go with over, under, over, under, over

Call me optimistic but I see big years for some of our young Angels and less than favorable years from FA acquisitions.

I have similar projections

I’d say Woody blasts 25 if he plays more than 130 games, I think Aybar will swipe 35, because he’s too fast not to be in the leadoff hole and do that. I think Matsui will probably hit 20, Pineiro I see around 4.10 and Howie I see batting .325.

by Halowood on Feb 6, 2010 9:00 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Unfortunately.

SB are not about being fast. It’s about 1st step explosiveness and reading the pitchers. Aybar is seriously fast, and explosive off the jump, but he has never had good SB % numbers at any of his minor league stops (even though he had A TON of SB). He can get better at it but I’d take the under on the 30 SB.

why not?

Wood- Under
Matsui- Under
Aybar- Under
Piñeiro- Over
Kendrick- Over (barely)

I suppose this makes me look fairly pessimistic, but you set the bar pretty high.

I have the exact same picks

Except I think Kendrick will hit well over .310.

by ryanfea on Feb 7, 2010 10:26 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Care to explain?

I tried to pick controversial numbers to stimulate debate? So is Wood not going to reach 23 HR because he won’t have enough playing time or he just isn’t that good or both?

Matsui I can understand, leaving the launchpad East Coast, even though Yankee stadium didn’t help him a lot..

Aybar I can also understand because he’s never been a SB man in the majors before. I just think being thrust into the leadoff role will force him to grow as a player, leading to an increae in OBP and SB so he more resembles someone worthy of leading off.

Pineiro’s the big question mark with me. He was so bad for the Mariners in the AL West. As soon as he gets to the Cards and Dave Duncan in the NL he sees significant success. I just don’t know if he developed that pitch or it was the weaker league.

Kendrick I think has defeated some personal demons that plagued his game since he came up (injuries, pitch recognition, patience, defense) and has become the complete player. He’s going to be very good this year.

by Halowood on Feb 7, 2010 10:52 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Sure

Wood- I think he’ll be UNDER because I think he’ll be splitting time with Izturis, and because he’ll struggle with off-speed pitching. That’s not to say hitting under 23 HRs is a bad season. A .265 BA and 18 HRs would be a decent first full season in my book.

Matsui- This is the one I could see myself being wrong about. Matsui’s home/away splits aren’t dramatic, but he also had the luxury of being in a lineup with some of the game’s most feared hitters. I also think he’ll miss a quarter of the season, but that’s purely gut feeling.

Aybar- Really I chose UNDER for the reasons you mentioned. He has the speed but he’s never demonstrated an intuition for baserunning at any level. I think he’s due for a jump….just not that much.

Pineiro- I wasn’t a fan of the signing and I think he will struggle against AL lineups. An ERA around 4.84 sounds about right. Maybe worse.

Kendrick- I hope you’re right. He’s been one of my favorites the past 5 years but he’s yet to show any patience or pitch selection. If he does he’ll be the fantastic hitter we all expected. If not, I still think his raw talent can enable him to hit above .300, but not by a significant margin.

Hmm

Under – See Wood struggling a bit, and I think Maice would get some of his playing time.
Under – Guessing for a slight decline here.
Under – Think he’ll steal around 30, but probably around 25~
Under – See him as more of a 4.00, hopefully.
Over – If he stays healthy, can easily hit over that.

Im feeling optimistic on most of the guys...

1. Wood- I’m gonna say under. I want to say over, but I really just cant see it. While he has serious power, when was the last time he showed it? I’ve been looking through his numbers that last couple years and I’m beginning to wonder if he’s changed his swing to try and make better contact against big league pitching and its come at the expense of his power. 31 HR in 395 AB in 08. 22 in 386AB last year.

2. Matsui- Over. This guy can hit, I really dont think he will have any trouble hitting 25+ HR. As long as he doesnt convince scoscia that he should be in the OF, I dont see much risk of injury and it seems completely reasonable to think he will be blasting HR all year long with Kendry, Torii and Rivera around him.

3. Aybar- Under. I think he will be practicing stealing quite a bit in spring training, but I envision Aybar being part of a lot of hit and runs- a scoscia favorite- rather than straight steals.

4. Pineiro- Under. I’m a believer in the new pitch and self-reinvention. This is not the pitcher that we saw 3 or 4 years ago. I dont think he will duplicate the success he had in the weaker NL last year, but I think he will do well with his new pitch keeping guys off balance.

5. Kendrick- Over. Howie seemed to finally figure it out and I’m hoping he can keep it up. I would bet we see some more power from him too. It wouldnt surprise me to see him hit .335 with 25 HR.

by Balls and Strikes on Feb 8, 2010 8:22 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I too wonder about Wood

Part of me thinks he still has the same power as always, he was just working on some quirks in his swing, not really concerned with minor league results, but the larger picture. The other side says he hit for a lot more power before he lowered his hands and questions when the last time Mickey Hatcher’s advice actually helped someone? So I’m on the fence. I think if Wood plays over 130 games he will eclipse 23 HR, if he plays 150 he will be in the upper 20’s. Those are big ifs. Sciosica LOVES Izzy an hasn’t the patience for Wood. He loves Izzy so much he will DH him and bat him 3rd. It’s for that reason that I believe Wood will only play 100-120 games at 3B and be around 20 in the HR total.

As far as Pineiro, yes he’s a changed player with something to prove in the AL. He will be a tad unfamiliar which will lead to success in the short run. The 2nd half of the eason is when we will really find out if his cutter or sinker are really difference makers. I think they are.

Kendrick hitting 25 HR’s? Never. He’s got power, that’s for sure. But his power more translates to line drives that one hop the wall, not the arching backspin balls that HR hitters specialize in. On top of that, Scioscia is prone to playing Izzy over Howie, so I don’t think Howie will lay enough games for that. I give him 10-15 HR’s this year.

by Halowood on Feb 8, 2010 1:05 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

He puts the barrel of the bat on the ball

He has a strong torso, and strong forearms and wrists as well. All of that says he’s going to hit HR’s, but all his line drives suggest something different.

by Halowood on Feb 8, 2010 3:37 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe Wood is telling the truth when he says...

He cant hit if he doesnt play every day. I thought it was a crap excuse, but maybe its accurate. If the guy suddenly cant even hit Minor League pitching- which he pounded the last few years- when he isnt hitting every day, there are only 2 scenarios I can think of. 1.) He has screwed up his swing so bad he couldnt hit the 12 year olds playing little league or 2.) He really needs to be swinging the bat everyday to maintain timing.
Here’s hoping its number 2!

by Balls and Strikes on Feb 9, 2010 12:29 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I can guarantee it's number 2.

Why? Because I know from experience that hitting a baseball is not like riding a bike. It doesn’t matter what level you’re at, until you establish muscle memory, timing and hand eye coordination, you’ll never be successful hitting the ball in large portions. There are of course slight exceptions. Even if you do manage to get all of these down, there’s still no simulating a game-time environment. The lights, the crowd, the pressure.

Wood playing everyday will help. There’s still aspects of the game he will need to work on. But being in the lineup everyday will be HUGE for him.

by Halowood on Feb 9, 2010 8:02 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Wood – Under, I would love to be proven wrong though.
Matsui – Under (He’s not in Yankees Stadium anymore)
Aybar – Under, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he swipes a ton more than projected. He’s a growing player who can fit into the leadoff mold. Once he gets plate patience down, he’ll be a really great leadoff hitter.
Pineiro – Under, he’s got a new pitch and it’s worked. I don’t know how far he’ll go with it, but he definitely has the tools to have a sub 4.00 ERA, even in the AL.
Kendrick – Over. Kendrick is getting better every week, slowly taking that 2B position from Izturis. Look for him to have a breakout season next season.

Under - Under - Over - Under - Under - Over

If Wood wards off platooning at 3B his first full year up it will be a miracle. At a platoon, he is closer to 15 HR’s to go with his middlin’ defense at 3B. This, I suspect, is why this is the year that yet another wave of fandom hard-ons for The Unproven get swept into that vast ocean of reality that Sosh studies from his prime perch in the lifeguard tower. May you find comfort there with your Kotchman/D-Mac/Arredondo brethren.

Matsui is fine. 22 homers fine. Plug the hole at DH that was filled by a broken down Vlad fine. But Matsui is breaking down too. He ain’t pushing no 30 HR’s in 2010.

I’m only suspecting Aybar of the over because Sosh is now forced to find somebody to steal Figgy’s bases. Aybar’s percentage won’t be fabulous, but he should best 30 successes out of sheer volume of effort.

Pineiro is going to enjoy a stretch of good outings with his new approach while the AL needs time to figure him out all over again. This will help his overall season numbers even is he does turn out to be a chimera.

Howie won’t be so bad as to be sent back down this year. That should count for something. 20 points on his BA? Let’s hope so!

Had I owned the Pittsburgh Pirates, I could have saved America.
