Olney Rates the best Rotations
Buster Olney answers a question about what he thinks are the best rotations 1-5. It is an insider article, so let me know if the link doesn't work, and I will copy and paste the part about the rotations.

1. Red Sox: Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, John Lackey, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Clay Buchholz, No. 6 Tim Wakefield. On paper, a strong group — if Beckett has a season worthy of a contract drive, if Lackey succeeds in making the transition to the American League East, if Matsuzaka can finally get on the same page as the Red Sox staff and if Buchholz continues to improve.
2. Yankees: CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Andy Pettitte, Javier Vazquez, Phil Hughes. As usual, Burnett is the key for this group; it could be the best if he pitches at an elite level.
3. White Sox: Jake Peavy, Mark Buehrle, John Danks, Gavin Floyd, Freddy Garcia. Peavy looked great in his three starts down the stretch this past season. More on that in Wednesday’s blog.
4. Angels: Jered Weaver, Scott Kazmir, Joe Saunders, Ervin Santana, Joel Pineiro. Lackey is gone, but if Santana is healthy, this could be an excellent group.
5. Cardinals: Chris Carpenter, Adam Wainwright, Kyle Lohse, Brad Penny, somebody else. Penny, by the way, appears to be in great shape and is motivated to have a big season.

Yankees?
I’ll grant that their rotation is potentially as good as Olney rates it, but that depends upon several variables. Of course, the same can be said of any team, but aside from the questions about Burnett (who has has as many iffy seasons as not), they’re counting on Pettitte continuing to receive his shipments of HGH or something to keep him on top of his game at age 38, and for Vasquez to be a better pitcher at age 33 in NY than he was at age 27, and for Hughes to finally figure out how to get batters out for more than one time through the lineup.
Yeah, their IPV is higher than league average.

Wouldn’t shock me if A.J.’s riding the DL (psych eval) by June.
"Sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."
I think they have 3 guys who can pitch like aces
and have in the past. That, plus the potential of Hughes and the stability of Pettite make it hard to argue IMO

I like our chances
And I think this right here is why us and the White Sox will make up half of the AL contingent in the 2010 playoffs. I’m betting on the Rangers’ offense and improved performances by their younger pitchers to carry them over either Boston or New York for the Wild Card.
As far as established rotations go, I agree this is the top 5, although perhaps not in this order.

So Olney rates us as having a better rotation than the M's
and everyone under the sun would say the Angels have the better offense, and yet we are suppose to believe the M’s will challenge for the division????
They scored 4 more runs than the Pirates last year guys……..
Well Put.
In fact, you hear some crazies out they’re saying that we’ll be challenging THEM for the division, instead of the other way around. Ridiculous.

But obviously
Milton Bradley and Figgins.
You just know that they’ll instantly score a few thousand this year.
Twister
I can’t wait for Twister Bradley to have his mental breakdown with the M’s. It’s inevitable. Like T.O. in the NFL, some guys just can’t keep from making an ass out of themselves.

Olney rates us 4th
and due to its stability, we could be higher. All of that and some of our own fans are still complaining about the offseason………

Why are there doubts about Santana's health?
I.ve read nothing about him hurting in the offseason, and he isn’t exactly proved to be injury prone over the last few years. His issues are more in his head than his body.

Well...last year he did go out onto the DL. Twice.
Mebbe there is a caveat about a new trend.

Yeah, he did
But Kaz and Saundo were both hurting as well. John Lackey been on the DL for the last 3 years and he doesn’t get tagged with the injury risk? Im just wondering if that was the best caveat Buster could come up with.

IIRC, when Santana went on the DL the 1st time...
…the medical reports (I believe an MRI) showed his elbow tendon with moderate fraying., though not bad enough to require immediate surgery. That likely accounts for the hedging, caveats, and question marks.
Thanks
That was the kind of info I was looking for. When Dice-K, Peavy, and Penny aren’t mentioned as health risks, but Ervin is, it had me wondering WTF was going on.

Okay, I'll bite.
How does one get away with ranking a staff with “somebody else” as their fifth starter 5th? Are we just penciling in Nuke LaLoosh and calling it a day, Olney?

Even worse is that Brad Penny is the # four on that same rotation. Ugh.
“but he’s a motivated Brad Penny.” Wow, I am impressed.
I love this team.

Exactly.
He makes a point to his readers by starting off the piece explaining how this is the best 1-5 in MLB, not to be mistaken for the strong 1-2 punch of the M’s and then goes on to rank a staff in the top 5 that doesn’t even have a fifth starter?!? This is a perfect example of why everything Buster Olney says should be taken with a grain of salt . . . that or completely ignored.
RIP NA
Lohse, Penny and "sombody else" are better than the M's 3, 4 and 5 guys?
Maybe Seatle can go to a 2 man rotation…….

i'm just glad we got mention
baseball tonight the other day had no one mentioning us as either the top 5 in baseball or having a top 5 rotation. we don’t have the archetype ace-figure, but we really haven’t had that since langston/finley, if you ask me.
i figure our rotation, at worst, is still solid top-to-bottom. i’m not counting on santana being great, but i think it’s hard to go against our rotation when you look at it as a whole. i just hope we can get something that scares people in the playoffs. weaver, kaz, i’m looking at you.

Scary shit during interleague.
I’m drunk and have a theory, Olney, Rosenthal, and everyone else at ESPN and Fox Sports knows that any baseball fan could do their job (and arguably better). The only way they can stay relevant is to pepper in some nonsensical bullshit into their articles to get people riled up, reading and talking. I apologize if this isn’t as profound to anyone else as it is in my head.
Sorry Seattle, 2010 still isn't your year.
