A (brief) Historical Look at Spring Training Baseball
The question, "Does Spring Training even matter?" is what lots of baseball fans around this time of year often ask when evaluating the early, pre-season performances of their favorite team. For us Angel fans, we all certainly hope not, judging from our 2-9-2 start in 2010.
In hopes of keeping up with Halowood, I thought I would do a little research into the last 8 years of pre-season baseball to see if a teams W - L record in the Cactus or Grapefruit League, often translates into the regular season.
The answer? Not, really. But here are some, mildly interesting facts...
* The last time the Angels had had a losing season was also the last time they had a losing PRE-season. (2003)
* Since 2002, four teams have made it to the World Series with losing pre-season records (2009 & 2008 Phillies, 2005 Chicago White Sox, 2003 Marlins) 3 out of 4 times these teams won it.
* When looking at teams since 2002 that have made it to the NLCS/ALCS, never have ALL of those final, four teams also been in the top four of their respective Spring Training league. The most since 2002 has been 2 teams. In 2004, both Boston and St. Louis finished in the top 4 of the Grapefruit. In 2005 the Angels toped the Cactus while St. Louis was 3rd in the Grapefruit. In 2009, Angels and the Skankees topped their respective spring-training leagues.
* Since 2002, twice has it occured that none of the top four teams in the Cactus and Grapefruit made it to the ALCS/NLCS that same season (2003 & 2006).
Here's a run down of the last 8 years of Spring Training baseball. Top four finishers of each league are listed.

We have been a cactus league powerhouse
Almost every year we are in the top four. This year we might be in the bottom four. I hope this does not mean anything but it could mean something. This is why i hate talking about spring training. I wish we could just start the season and beat up on the A’s(Shit), Rangers(Shit), and Marines(shit). Oh and the red sux and Shankees.
Go Angels

Losing record in the regular season.
It doesnt necessarily mean it will happen again but, its something to think about.

If I'm not mistaken...
Angels have a lot more people in camp this year, and they’re trying lot’s of different things instead of a just a few. I think that’s more indicative of our crappy record so far. But it does make one wonder where we are headed. Ultimately I don’t think spring training matters for the regular season. But it might be showing a thinning of our organizational depth.
Happy Birthday to the ground!
Same thinking here
They still haven’t even slimmed down the roster yet. When they send some of the players to the AAA team, and during the last two weeks when how you play counts, then you might want to watch the … it don’t matter. It ain’t the season.
Yeah. Nabors? Brasier? Come on. Once they narrow it to the 40 man, and then the 25, we'll do better.

Meh
give it some time as far as organizational depth goes.
With the exception of our outfield/DH, we’re a very young team. And while our young core of Kendrick, Morales, Aybar, Wood, Mathis, Napoli, Saunders, Santana, Weaver, and Kazmir continue to mature and progress, we can let the bottom-heavy ranks of our organization work their way up the ladder in time to replenish us.
I’m not worried about the thinness…it’s more a reflection of how saturated our pro team got all at once with elite minor league talent, rather than it being a gradual infusion.

The Marlins won in 2003, not 2004
and the NLCS in 2009 was PHI-LAD, not PHI-COL

thanks, actually CKOD...
I actually did all this by myself, no copy and pasting from any website I could find. In other words, I suspected errors would occur, so I appreciate you catching it.
As for the LAA versus the ANA…I purposely kept it LAA to not make it so confusing…I mean, c’mon, you know I know we were ANA and not LAA in 2002…right?

I would hope so
otherwise I would just blindly insist for the remainder of the year that you’re a bandwagoner and that I hate you. :-D
