All-Time Home Grown Team
In light of the MLB Network television series "30 Clubs In 30 Days" and their segment on the All-Time Home Grown Team of the different MLB clubs, I am curious to know what all of you Halos Heaven members think the California (or Anaheim, or Los Angeles of Anaheim) Angels All-Time Home Grown Team would be.
I've had trouble putting together a decent Home Grown lineup, due in part to my general lack of Home Grown knowledge, but also (after some research) I've found that the Angels don't have the most prominent Home Grown starters in their past. More specifically at the second base and shortstop positions. Again, I don't know the entire Angels team history, maybe you fellow fans can provide me with more information about players past, and inform me of those worthy of the All-Time Team.

Did you do that all from memory?
…without looking anything up? I trust you did, and I guess my peepee just curled into pillbug form in it’s envy.
Like AngelFan1, I could maybe do every position with homegrown talent (ok not all but close to it) though they wouldn’t be the best.
Okay, I just about died
because the image of RedFog’s peepee in a pillbug form is forever inbedded into my memory. I forgot about Knoop at 2nd, and for some reason though that Fregosi was acquired. How is it possible that Fregosi was signed by the Bosux in 1960, but drafted by the Angels in the Amateur Draft?

Knoop and Fregosi
were picked up in the expansion draft

It appears,
that because of the bullpen my private part has been stricken with rigomortis :o
Scioscia for President!
that is an awesome bullpen
My prediction as of 12-11-2009- Wood .265 avg, 20 HRs 70 RBIs and an above average glove at 3b

I think a good follow up question is
what Angels in the last few years that you have seen has a chance of taking someone off this list? probably not many, maybe Kendry if he continues his surge and HK will have to really impress us for a number of years.
tough call interesting thought though

I forgot about
Aybar and weaver
I am not sure about Aybar, but Weaver in a couple of years maybe knocks off Finley or Witt?

I would think that Lackey goes off the list before Finley or Witt.
Not because of the signing with Boston. Just wanted to get that part out of the way.

i'll give it a shot
C Bengie Molina
1B Wally Joyner
2B Howie Kendrick (in a couple years?)
SS Jim Fregosi
3B Troy Glaus
LF Garrett Anderson
CF Jim Edmonds
RF Tim Salmon
UTIL Robb Quinlan
SP Frank Tanana
SP Chuck Finley
SP Mike Witt
SP Dean Chance
SP John “traitor” Lackey
CL Troy Percival
CL Francisco Rodriguez
SU Scot Shields
R.I.P. Nick Adenhart #34
Quinlan at utility?
I wanted to put Kendrick, but he only has a couple years under his belt, and he still has yet to reach his peak.
R.I.P Adenhart
Erstad at utility is good,
I wanted to put him at 1B, but he only had one good year and that was as a center fielder.
R.I.P Adenhart
Not to get too technical
but GA was in center that season. Ersty was in left. Scioscia flipped them around the following season.
My list, in which "home grown" means "originally signed with Angels"
C Bengie Molina
1B Wally Joyner
2B Howie Kendrick
SS Dickie Thon
3B Troy Glaus
LF Garret Anderson
CF Jim Edmonds
RF Tim Salmon
DH Tom Brunansky
Bench
Brian Harper, Carney Lansford, Dave Chalk, Darin Erstad, Devon White, Willie Aikens
Rotation
Chuck Finley
Frank Tanana
Andy Messersmith
John Lackey
Mike Witt
Bullpen
Troy Percival
Frankie Rodriguez
Scot Shields
Bryan Harvey
Roberto Hernandez
I was waiting..
for someone to throw Edmonds in. The guy was an all-around a-hole, but he could play.
Scioscia for President!
Did Hernandez ever actually pitch for the Angels?
From what I can tell he made it to AA Midland before going to the ChiSox. Shouldn’t actually playing for the club at the big league level be a qualifier as well?
If the list was home-growners who excelled as Angels, it'd be much different
Bye-bye Thon, Brunansky, Harper, Aikens, Hernandez, etc. And if it was “excelled PRIMARILY or MOST EXCELLENTLY as Angels,” then you’d lose Lansford & Messersmith & White and arguably Edmonds, too.
Lansford, too
Second base is the toughest call — Kendrick is a bout of wishful thinking, since Callaspo has actually been better so far. Jerry Remy has a valid argument, and so does … Damion Easley! Hell, Mark McLemore. And, when they’re finally able to convert (let alone easily list) Japanese League stats, there might be a good argument for Broadway Bobby Rose…..
Other possible names
If you’re just talking about originally signed by the Angels you could include. . .
Dante Bichette. Granted his monster numbers could mostly be attributed to Coors.
Bobby Jenks. The inclusion of Jenks could give rise to another list. Maybe we could come up with a “Biggest Jerks in Halo’s History” list
It could include such luminaries as:
Shea Hillebrand
Mo Vaughn
Jose Guillen
Bobby Jenks
Bartolo Colon (Just for being a fat lazy slob)
Jim Edmonds
Anyone else?

Luis Polonia... not that he was signed originally by the halos, but still
Its a special kinda dude that will tell a 12 year old to f-off for asking for a signature.

What are the chances that Napoli trumps Molina in the next 3-5 years?
All I remember of Molina was that he only hit singles…and that his stats got better when he went to SF.
Halos & Clips...must have something to do with the color red and jaded pasts...
by BryanHarvey'sMoustache on Mar 17, 2010 10:02 PM PDT up reply actions
Chances are good
Napoli has better power numbers. If he played everyday he would hit 35-40 homers easily.
Scioscia for President!
Not very unless his defense improves substantially
I am on a horse!
everyone seems to agree
on 1b and 3b and the entire outfield and most of the bullpen starting rotation and SS and 2b seems the most wide open which i am confused about, I thought Fergosi was a lock
My prediction as of 12-11-2009- Wood .265 avg, 20 HRs 70 RBIs and an above average glove at 3b

The All-Time Home Grown Team on the MLB Network has only one Starter and One releiver
if I am not mistaken.
In that case, I’d pick Finley and Percy. However, I imagine they’ll go with Rodriguez.

We could have another list
Dallas could only make it if it were the. . .
“All Time list of Angels named after Cities”
In that case, you could include Figgins. . .
Chone Figgins. . .Chone, Ecuador
Another list that Dallas would qualify for is. . .
“All Time Angels Busts”
(And no, I’m not talking about those kinds of “busts”.

so could todd greene, george arias, casey kotchman, etc...
The angels have had a plethora of minor league prospects who could “mash” but flopped terribly when they got to the big leagues.

Happy Birthday to the ground!
One Issue
Q catches?
FATHER OF A WONDERFUL SON VLADIMIR
Sorry not named after Guerrero...but would be cool
No need.
Q pitches to first pitch contact. And since Q plays perfect defense, he makes all the plays. Therefore he’ll throw 162 perfect games, 0 K, 0 BB all on a combined 4374 pitches. This of course doesn’t inculde the postseason, which doesn’t matter because the other teams are too frightened to play against our Q-riffic team. Arte then renames us the Quinlans, global warming ends, and world peace is finally realized.
