Yeah, honestly I don't get it.
The guy is basically never going to play baseball except once or twice a season? I’m no athlete but I do know repetition and working on your skills are essential to having any shot at making it (look at Michael Jordan). I don’t blame him one bit for taking the money, but he seems like he’s just humoring the Angels at this point. And if he happens to suffer a football-career ending injury (essential what the Angels are hoping for) how does that leave him in any condition to start a career in baseball? Can any of you smarty-pants out there explain this to me?
WTF? This seems to be a very "AIG-esque" use of money
What are they going to do, wait for him to get hurt or get drafted and flame out in the NFL?
Talk about a bad investment.

The bonus was paid (or at least agreed to) when he was signed last year.
At that time, there was a bit more doubt about his future in the NFL. He was coming of a season at UW that was good for him but bad for the team.
It was (and I think remains) a reasonable risk for 6 years($300,000.00), especially when compared to what GMJ will be paid by the Halos this year ($10,000,000.00?)
