Top Positional Prospects in 2010

Hey guys, I'm putting together a list of who I think will have the best seasons for our farm system this season.  Let me know if you think someone else is more deserving.

Catcher - Hank Conger.  He's a monster switch hitter, quick behind the plate and young.  Looks like he'll be headed to AAA this season, much more of a hitters paradise instead of AA Arkansas, oh and he has a rocket arm.  Projection: .310 30 DB 25 HR .365 OBP

First Base - Mark Trumbo.  I still have doubts as to his ability long term.  but the fact is, he's a power hitter headed into a power ball park in AAA.  Projection: .270 30 DB 30 HR .330 OBP

Second Base - Alex Amarista. Ripped up Cedar Rapids and he's headed to Rancho, a favorable ball park.  I think he's Maicer's eventual replacement.  Projection: .300 20 DB 5 HR 25 SB .375 OBP

Shortstop - Andrew Romine.  We don't have much depth here.  But Romine's proven capable at every level.  Projection: .275 25 DB 5 HR 30 SB

Third Base - Freddy Sandoval.  He's done well in AAA for the past couple of years.  He'll have a spot in the bigs eventually.  Projection: .320 30 DB 15 HR .380 OBP

Outfield - Peter Bourjos.  The talent is there without a doubt.  Now he's headed to AAA, more of a hitters park.  He has a future in the bigs.  Projection: .280 25 DB 15 HR 45 SB .345 OBP

Outfield - Chris Pettit.  Another player with an undefined future, but with talent.  If he can stay healthy, he can really do some damage in AAA.  Projection: .320 30 DB 10 HR 30 SB .400 OBP

Outfield - Mike Trout.  He's extremely polished for an 18 year old kid.  Headed to Cedar Rapids this season, he figures to spend the whole year there and maybe Rancho at the end.  Projection: .300 30 DB 10 HR 25 SB .380 OBP

Designated Hitter - Carlos Ramirez.  Actually a catcher, but very gifted, probably the most under rated player in our system.  Headed to cedar Rapids to start the year, I expect to see him in Rancho by the all-star break.  Projection .320 35 Db 25 HR .400 OBP.

Starting Pitcher - Garret Richards.  He's got a good ceiling, and he'll be facing a lot of guys who are fresh out of high school in Cedar Rapids, so he'll be able to get away with alot.  130 IP 2.75 ERA 150 K's.

Relief Pitcher - Michael Kohn.  After completely dominated everyone at every level, I think we'll see him in AA, AAA and the majors in September.  This is only his 3rd year as a pitcher, I think he's only going to get better.  50 IP 2.00 ERA 65 K's.

Honorable Mentions: OF Randal Grichuk (.290 30 DB 17 HR 15 SB), 2B Jean Segura (.310 25 DB 5 HR 30 SB), 2B Ryan Mount (.275 30 DB 20 HR 15 SB).

Two players from ASU!

What I’d change: I don’t think Pettit will play much this season, so I’d go with Grichuk. And Reckling ought to at least get an honorable mention but I won’t quibble with Richards.

Seeing this list makes me feel exponentially better about our farm system. With only Amarista starting in Rancho too (which is traditionally where we see our break out players due to the ballpark-fuled offense league is a great thing). I expect him to mash there.

I list Pettit because

He’s one of the most under rated players in our system, after Ramirez. It’s hard not to be excited about this kid, he’s hit at every level anytime he’s been healthy. Had he not gotten injured last year his BA may have ended over .350 in AAA. That’s something even Howie would go “woah!” over. Since our OF is full and we may risk losing Evans or Willits, Pettit looks like he’s headed back to SLC.

Both he and Sandoval are guys that absolutely slaughter AAA, but aren’t considered “toolsy” (a term I dislike) and are stuck in systems where they can’t break the big league club. Both of these guys would be starters for a lower end NL or AL team.

Judging current reports, Grichuk may not be slated for Cedar Rapids. The Angels may keep him in rookie ball to work on his plate discipline. I don’t buy it, I think he’ll go to Cedar Rapids where he belongs and figure it out there. If Grichuk’s in Rancho next season hell for sure be on the list, in fact I may even have him down for 30 bombs in Rancho.

I don’t think Rancho will help Amarista as much. His style of play is just awesome, no matter where, so I don’t think we’ll see much fluctuation in his stats at every level. Both he and Segura will both be major leaguers.

Who was the guy today who ripped...

…a towering fly that went foul otherwise had the distance to be a huge homer.

Never heard of him before. Was it Amarista?

Amarista didnt play today

i think your talking about Cory Aldridge

he was drafted by the Braves in 97, made it to the bigs in 01, only has 5 major league AB and hasnt made it to the majors since 01. He was with KC in 08 and 09. He is a career minor leaguer and hes 31

Yeah Aldridge was the name...

…thanks. I knew it began with an A.

So how did he end up with the Angels. Never heard of him before.

How are you adding up your predictions?

Just curious. Is it like…make a wish and write it down? I mean looking at two of the prospects…

Pettit: has only hit more than 10 HR’s ONCE in his entire minor league career…and it was in Rookie ball.

Conger:
Has never hit more than 13 HR’s in the minors and his highest BA at this point is .319 but that was in rookie ball with 79 AB’s.

….

I could go on but then I realized that there is someone else who should be added to your list. For FAT exaggerations….

okay im just messing with ya…kinda.

Halos & Clips...must have something to do with the color red and jaded pasts...

Love your exuberance...

… but, yeah, these predictions seem like the stuff of a coke bender. “Peter Bourgos?!” (snoooort) “Oh he’s definitely mashing this year! 10 home runs!” (grimaces, rubs gums) "10 dongs? Eff that. 15, baby! And Trumbo’s hittin’ 30! (snooooooooorrrrrt) “Waahahahdhdha!”

On a more complimentary note, your list reminds me that we have jack-shit in the way of shortstop prospects. Maybe something to address in June….

The reason for the numbers inflation has a lot to do with where they are

I mean Trumbo in AA last year wasn’t overly impressive in the power department, neither was Conger. But keep in mind, Wood only hit I think 20 in Arkansas (of course that was an extreme pitching year, more so than usual) before going off and hitting 30 HR in only 100 games in SLC the next season.

I think Trumbo and Conger will hit over 20 HR’s this next season. I doubt Trumbo’s going to be a successful big leaguer, but his stats sure will look nice in the PCL.

Wood at AA Arkansas in 2006:

Batted .276 with 25 homers, 83 RBIs, 74 runs scored and 19 stolen bases in 118 games. He was first in the Texas league in extra base-hits (71), second in doubles (42), third in slugging percentage (.552) and fifth in home runs.

Well there you go.

Over 120 games in SLC, Trumbo can probably approach 25-30 HR’s. Woody does it in under 100 and he’s not a pure power hitter, there’s other aspects of his game, whereas all Trumbo has to do is imitate Adam Dunn lol.
