Twins closer Nathan out for the year
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports: Twins closer Joe Nathan has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. If he decides to undergo surgery, the 35-year-old reliever likely would miss the entire 2010 season, a major blow for the defending AL Central champions.
This might be a good opportunity to acquire someone from the Twins, in exchange for Brian Fuentes. The Twins need a closer or they have no chance of repeating in the Central Division. The Angels have lots of arms, and my view is that Fuentes won't be the closer by July, if not sooner. No chance for Mauer, but they have some other talent, like Nick Punto, Scott Baker, Delmon Young, or Jason Kubel.

I guess congratulations to the 2010 AL Central Champions, the Chicago White Sox
I think the only one we might need or want out of that group you suggested is Kubel if we have problems with Torii/Abreu/Matsui. Maybe Baker if something goes wrong with our rotation.

And we don't need him...
Yet…

I don't see Fuentes getting traded.
Even if he loses the closer job, he’ll most likely just be somewhere else in the bullpen.
Trade for Nick Punto?
Are you off your effing meds?
Where do we play Kubel or Young? Are you suggesting we trade pitching for yet more outfielders?
The Twins won't want an expensive BP arm
They are very good at promoting within the ranks and considering they are trying to sign Mauer to a long term deal they won’t want to break the bank for closer.
That being said LET THE MAUER FOR FUENTES TALK BEGIN!
Mauer
for Q, Wilson and that Nabors kid who pitched yesterday and walked like 5 guys or something on the way to giving up 4 runs in a third of an inning.
Let’s get this deal done!
Nabors? You mean the guy who came out and did this on the mound?!

Yeah, I linked this yesterday, but I couldn’t post the pic straight up because it was a game thread. This could also be the Twins’ chances of winning now that Joe Nathan is out.

This really sucks for the Twins
I really respect their organization and their fan base. The Angels do have some arms available, but I don’t see a trade happening between the two clubs, but what do I know. MLB just turned me down to be commissioner of an Australian Developmental League. Yes, I have no experience, and yes, I did apply. So what?

HA! Who did you lose the job to?
And what were the requirements?
Maybe I’ll give it a whirl…it’s only on the other side of the planet.

I have no idea who I lost to
It was one of those goofy moments in the job hunt where I basically said “F*** it, what’s the worst that could happen?”.
I have some edumacation, but nothing in the range of being a GM for an Aussie League. I probably couldn’t be the GM for a midget football league, the one with real wee folk.
Give it a shot, “what’s the worst that could happen”?

Twins going bargain shopping
Agree with Salmon Stream. The Twins are going to be counting all their pennies in their big jar to be able to pay Mauer. Fuentes makes too much money.
If I were the Twins, I would probably be more interested in Heath Bell, given his current salary. But, the Padres would probably strike a hard bargain.
Twins will probably go bargain shopping late in Spring Training. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them go for someone like Gagne, if he doesn’t make the Dodgers bullpen (a good chance of that happening with their depth).
Fuentes wouldn't cost them anything
The insurance the Twins would have on Nathan would offset the salary for Fuentes. Nathan’s 2010 salary is $11.25M, while Fuentes’ is but $9M. More to the point, TJ surgery takes a full season to get to full strength AFTER the year off, which means the 2011 vesting option for Fuentes ($9M) might be a good fallback position should Nathan’s recovery be slower than expected (he’s 35 now, for crying out loud).
But as I said before, my guess is that the Twins will go with Lirano.

Twins will go with Lirano
Tempting as it might seem to dangle Fuentes in front of the Twins and hope for a fat deal, the Twins have the option of using Lirano as the closer, which, due to the arm trouble he has had, might be a more attractive idea than using him in the rotation.

They also have Rauch
He closed a little for Washington. Speaking of the Twins has anyone read about this guy? Van Mil
Because...?
Why?
Seems to me that Liriano has the stuff to baffle batters for one go-round, but showed last year he falters in the 2nd and 3rd at-bats. As a closer, he could go all-out and not have to worry about facing the batters the second time that night.
In a strange way, it would be a means for him to get his confidence back. He could succeed as a closer in 2010, then return the job to Nathan (or whomever) and go back to the rotation in 2011 with some swagger.

CLosers not having to worry about facing batters a 2nd time? Really?
I wonder what that must be like. I think I have forgotten…

Not in the same game, no
And depending upon how a series works, perhaps not in the same series.

Last year he suffered from arm fatigue and was recovering from TJ surgery
Prior to his injury he had no problems facing batters a 2nd and 3rd time. MIN will put him in the rotation. They are already talking about putting a top prospect (ala Santana) in the bullpen and moving Guerrier to the closer.
They will want Liriano to pitch more innings than the closer role will provide. They view him as a starter.
Play Wood already. Willits sucks.
How about Mathis, Napoli, Fuentes for Mauer
Now that is a blockbuster!
it's also a dream...
actually, it’s the kind of dream that only another dream can even dream about.
"come on, eileen."
Local Boy-Alex Burnett
It occurred to me that the Twins might instead look for a closer candidate within their Farm System.
One of their more interesting closer prospects, is Alex Burnett, who pitched last year at New Britain (AA). He is a converted starting pitcher who they were using as a closer. The 18th ranked prospect in the Twins system. Burnett was born in Anaheim and went to Ocean View. There’s a local wrinkle for you!
I realize that there is virtually zero chance that he gets the call, but that local angle I thought it interesting nonetheless. At least to my eyes, it doesn’t look like the Twinkies have anyone in their minor league system who can step up.
Also, while Liriano might be an interesting possibility, I can’t imagine that they would do it. Not saying its impossible, just saying I can’t imagine it. He has more value as a starter. If he were to close, I’m not even sure if he could pitch consecutive games, given his past arm problems. Matt Guerrier looks like a better bet to me than Rauch.
Those offering Fuentes as a possibility are just dreaming.

From a Twins fan
It definitely sucks to have Nathan go down. I still think we’ve got a great shot to win the Central, but this complicates things. I like how much of a discussion you guys have going over Nathan – it’s always good to see another team’s fans get that involved with something going on with the Twins, even though I wish it was in better circumstances.
As far as replacements for Nathan, here are a few options:
1. Promote from within the bullpen – Jon Rauch, Matt Guerrier, or Jose Mijares. Don’t know how likely the Twins will be to do this, but my guess would be Rauch if they do, since he’s got some closing experience. They could use Liriano, but I don’t think that’s likely – he has done well enough in the winter leagues as a starter that the Twins must be tempted to see if he returns to form. Pat Neshek would have been a great choice, but he was out for all of the 2009 season with an elbow injury.
2. Callup from the minors – Could be Anthony Slama (AAA), the guy’s done well through the minors and is doing great in spring training. Rob Delaney (AAA) is another possibility. Alex Burnett (AA) (mentioned above) is another possibility, but I think he’s less likely with two other candidates a level higher than him. I think Burnett has a great chance to make the team someday, but I don’t think it’s likely today.
3. Trade – cost is probably a factor here. Even the insurance from Nathan will pay only half of his salary, from what we hear. I also think the Twins are likely to try to trade Glen Perkins, Alexi Casilla, or prospects – they are in a “win now” mode, and won’t trade someone who will contribute much to the team in 2010. I’ve heard Jason Fraser and Heath Bell tossed around as names, but nothing concrete.

Neshek would have been perfect
But, like Liriano, he’s a graduate of Tommy John University, just not as far along in his recovery from the procedure as Liriano.
It is instructive to note that Neshek was diagnosed with the UCL injury in early 2008 but didn’t have the TJ until after the season ended, working to heal through rest instead. He sat out all of 2009 and apparently still isn’t ready—and he’s 6 years younger than Nathan. This might provide a glimpse of how long Nathan will be out of action.
I don’t mean to be Debbie Downer, but it may be that we have seen the last of the nails closer known as Joe Nathan. He may make a reappearance in mid- to late-2011, but by then he’ll be approaching his 37th birthday and facing an expensive option year for 2012 ($12.5M).
I’d hate to see his career fizzle out this way. He’s a great guy and deserves the best.
