Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

So who've you met?

About four years ago, I posted this thread, asking if anyone had met players: http://www.halosheaven.com/2006/7/31/15431/3996  (the html editor/link provider doesn't seem to be working right; that or I'm an idiot)--And we wound up with a pretty good discussion/collection of stories.  Since it's been four years, though, and this community has grown exponentially, I figure it's time to pose the question again.

Star-divide

So, who've you met?  I was lucky enough to run into Weaver, Naps, Quinlan, Cousin Oliver, and Lackey way back in 2007, the day after the Sux completed their second ALDS sweep of the Halos (story here: http://www.halosheaven.com/2007/10/8/1450/35005).  I've also run into the Soth in church (after a day game).

Given that we all need a bit of distraction from how much our team sucks at the moment, what do you say we swap some stories?

This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

Ran into Washburn and his wife and kids

at an Arby’s in Irvine in 2004 or so. My husband and I both did a double-take as he was walking in, then waited for him to order and sit down before approaching him to say hello. He was super nice and laid back. His wife kind of gave me the evil eye.

We just said hi and nice game 2 nights ago or whatever it was, and left them alone. No one else in the restaurant seemed to know who he was.

I'm not superstitious, but I'm a little stitious.

I met him as he was walking around the stadium! Shook his hand and every thing. Very cool for a 13 year old.

Arte is very approachable.

He is easy to catch during ST. In 2005 at Mesa, I had an aisle seat not knowing it was the same aisle used by Arte to get to/from his seat. It took him about 30 minutes for him to walk up the 25 rows. Fans kept asking him for pictures, hand-shakes and so on. There was one guy that bent his ear for about 10 minutes regarding the name change.
When he finally made it up to my row (2nd) from top, I was too embarrased for the guy to request any more of his time. I couldn’t believe he was that patient.

Steve Brown, a pitcher on the Halos 1983 team

He was dating my sister’s best friend back then. I met him while on leave from the Army and he gave me two tickets to an upcoming game he was starting against the Yankees. He won the game, which was also his very first major league victory. Unfortunately he would only win one more game for the Halos in his career — he struggled the following season and was sent back down to SLC and never returned.

Personally....

- A friend of mine was dating Tim Lincecum until about a year ago, got to meet him.

- I played against Brandon Wood in high school.

- Brother was roomates with Albert Pujols for about 3 weeks while I was 12 I think, so I met him and didn’t know it.

- Met Tim Salmon and Garret Anderson, both were awesome.

- Got to spend a significant amount of time with Wally Joyner and Rod Carew. I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed a better baseball centric conversation than the one with Carew. The man is a wealth of knowledge.

- Met Mike Piazza. He was coaching for the Italian World Cup team this past year, and you’d think being a catcher he’d be really into the specifics of the game, but I think he was more just there as a fan, in uniform.

Played with and against several minor leaguers that never ended up making it. It really gives you an idea as to the talent level these guys have. Even Reggie Willits is a gifted ball player, more so than a lot of us realize or give him credit for.

Quinlan on the other hand……that ugly swing and those duck feet, I just can’t imagine him really being that good.

Yeah, oddly enough....

He was a shortstop at the time. It was some traveling baseball team and he had either been drafted and not signed or was about to be drafted. He played for about a month until teams could get a better look at him, and as soon as he signed he was gone. Really didn’t know much English and he made a very strong SS.

That’s how it always was on that team. My brother played on it his junior and senior years before he was drafted. The really good players tended to only play there for a few weeks at a time, just so scouts can get a better idea about them. I got to play a few showcase tournaments with them, but nothing ever came of it. I put up solid numbers but team generally weren’t interested in 5 foot 9 second basemen with a weak arm. Teams tend to draft toolsy shortstops and if they fail they move to 2B.

Not far enough lol

He was a very offensive minded 3B/CF. Built like Nomar, hit like him too. But then back gave him problems at 22. Recovered, but then had a torn labrum. Didn’t recover from that. No teams wanted a 24 year old DH and he had a few other opportunities outside of baseball.

Ended up for the best though, married a good woman, got his degree, makes good money, has a beautiful house with a lot of land. It’s a happy ending if I ever heard one.

I met Doug DeCinces at a BAT dinner back 1n 2004

Bob Watson saw me wearing my Angel gear at the NY dinner and said, “Man, you got balls. Come with me, I got someone I want you to meet.” He brought me over to DeCinces and we talked for about 1/2 an hour. He was super cool and autographed a couple of balls for me. The thing that sticks in my mind was how e kept emphasizing that Arte was bringing the old players back for ST and what not to try install a sense of tradition. He said NONE of the prior ownership gave him as much as a phone call. It said it brought out the pride and love he had for the club. I would say that effort has succeeded.

At the dinner, i was seated with Lee Thomas, who played for the Angels in their first American League season after he was traded by the Yankees. He was nice, but was distracted by the death of Leon Wagner. Wags had died a few weeks before and Thomas was still pretty shaken up. He spent most of the dinner talking with Ryne Duren, also traded to the Angels by the Yankees in 1961, who was sitting at the next table. I now wish I was more of an asshole and evesdropped on the reminences, but I was trying to be respectful (a challenge, i know) of their privacy and their grief.

I met Jeff Mathis and David Eckstein

Both were awesome guys. They were busy so I didn’t want to keep them too long. I just did the typical shake of the hand, get a baseball signed and tell them that I really appreciate what they do/did.

I also bumped into John Ireland at a Laker game and had the pleasure of telling him that he sucks. (His sucking had to do with his disproportional fellatio to all things Lakers and his snarky comments about how the Angels will fall again to Boston in the 2009 ALDS)

Since he lives in the valley (I think) and this was NB. The Halos had just finished a day game a few hours prior and they were catching a flight to Detroit the next day, which was an off day. Jered Weaver

In January my buddy took me to a Laker game. After the game we met up with his girlfriend and a few other friends and went to a couple of bars. The second place we went to, one of the guys in our group spotted Jered Weaver. He was in the back shooting pool with a harem of ladies at his side. While I’m trying to figure out what to say—i want to make a good first impression, after all—he starts staring at me from the other side of the bar. I was looking at the people around us because I thought he must be looking at someone else, but nobody was looking at him. He was definitely staring at me. And for whatever reason he looked less than pleased. He then starts talking to the bartender and starts pointing at me with a scowl on his face. From reading his lips, I can tell his conversation with the bartender is laced with profanity. At this point I’m weirded out because there is no reason Jered Weaver should be mad at me. I’m one of his biggest fans! So I start to have doubts about whether to say hello to him or not. The only reason my buddy and I could come with was that he was drunk and I was the only other guy in the bar taller than him (I’m 6’7"). But I decided to at least say hi. I walked over to him real sly like but he was kind of staring off into the distance. I patted him on the shoulder and said “Hey, man.” (Yes, that was the best I could come up with). He kind of looked at me for a second and gave a cold, “Hi.” Then I said, “You’re getting the Cy Young this year.” He looked at me for a second then got a huge grin and said “Yeah.” Actually it sounded more like a real slow “Yeeeeeaaaaaah.” He was drunk. Mystery solved.

Every guy I met was a small eternity ago

In the 80’s & 90’s back when the thing for me and my dad to do was hang out after the games poaching autographs. A few I remember:

- Kirk Gibson (back when he was on the Tigers). A young lady came up to him and he literally elbowed/shoved her out of his path, knocking her to the concrete. I remember everybody booing and my dad screaming at him “0 FOR 4 GIBSON!!!”

- Wee Bob Costas & Wee Mike Gallego. You know, when you’re just a kid you expect to look up to these guys…

- Don Sutton. He drove a BMW with a plate that said “300 Wins” – someone had put a plastic grocery bag on his antenna, and he started yelling at everyone… still got his autograph though

Those are the ones that kind of stick out for me. Gary Pettis & Jose Canseco were complete douchebags. Wally Joyner was really cool though, Brian Downing too…

by The_Legend_Of_Wilfong on Apr 12, 2010 10:05 AM PDT reply actions

We used to hang out for autographs too.

Best one was from Cal Ripken. He stayed and signed until there was no one else asking. Really nice guy, talked with everyone and was real pleasant.

Same night, Eddie Murray was a complete dick. We never asked him for his autograph, but were standing a few feet away from him while he was talking a couple hot girls. A kid about 10 years old asked politely if he could get his signature, Murray said something like “Yeah, just a minute”. The kid stood there for awhile waiting until Murray was getting ready to walk away. The kid held out his card (or whatever it was) and Murry looked at him and then brushed on by.

When I was 14 I Met Some Rams

I played baseball with the manager of Gabriel/Olsen Porche on Ventura Blvd during the late 60’s and early 70’s. They were having a special promotion where Roman Gabriel, Merlin Olsen and Jack Snow were signing some footballs. After the signing our team got to spend some time with the three of them. Gabriel was kinda aloof and did not talk much. Merlin Olsen was very nice talked a lot and asked us how our team was doing. Jack Snow also was pretty friendly. The football I got that day was lost when I went into the navy and my mom cleaned my room.

Doug DeCinces played baseball for my High School (Monore in Sepulveda, CA), before I went there, but he came on campus one time to give a talk to our baseball team, he seemed like a pretty cool dude.

Guy Benjamin was in my Comparative Religions class when I was a freshman in High School 1974. He was a total jerk then, being the big man on campus. He want on to Stanford and was drafted by the Dolphins. I think his football career ended with the 49er’s. I have heard that he is a pretty cool guy now.

I watched Robin Yount play for Taft high school in 1972 and 1973, you could tell he was headed for great things. He was head and shoulders better then anyone on the field in high school. I believe he went straight from high school to the major leagues.

Debra Winger was in the graduating class ahead of me, and I had a couple classes with her, but don’t remember much. She did not leave much of an impression.

I met Nick three different times. He was always happy to sign an autograph, and was just an awesome, humble guy.
I remember in 2008 he was playing for AAA Salt Lake, and I went to the series in Portland in late August. I was sitting right next to the dugout, and he wasn’t pitching that day, so we had about a 10 minute conversation. I remember asking him if he thought he would get called up in September, and he was incredibly humble.
The last time I met him was during spring training, about three weeks before his terrible death. He was like a kid, just happy to be playing the game he loves.

Met Mickey Hatcher in the late 1980s at Dodger Stadium on Gymnastics day. Hatcher was out on the field and gave me a high 5 after doing a flip or something. I have washed my hand since then.

Met GA and Jim Edmonds at a baseball camp in the mid 1990s. Edmonds was hung over, absolutely did not want to be there. After having numerous hangovers in subsequent years, I understand why now. GA was gracious, friendly, and just a thrill to be around. I’ll always respect him for that afternoon alone.

Met Figgy, Quinlan, Eckstein, and Evans a number of times at Spring Training. They were always willing to sign for fans. Met former Salt Lake Bees player Nate Bland at a game in Tacoma in 2006. I talked with him a couple of minutes and he said he hated the Angels organization. That was semi-uncomfortable.

My cousin was an Angel girl during the 2002 season. That side of the family gets all the fun.

As for non-current or former Angels, I’ve met a lot, but the one that really stands out is Justin Upton. He signed baseballs for EVERYONE after a game in Tucson a few years ago. It was his first spring training after being a bonus baby the year before. He was polite, and shot the bull with whoever came up. It was very impressive to see such a young guy treat the fans so well.

Rob Wilfong

My broth… the guy my sister was married to was a hunting/fishing buddy with Wilfong. Went out to dinner with him at Pinnacle Pete’s in ’83 or ’84. His charming young son was there also and got all the attention, much to my foolish 19-year-old amazement.

Wilfong said that he would sometimes have a nightmare then the next morning awaken to find out that there had been a major disaster; plane crash or whatnot. I asked if he had a nightmare before flying to Milwaukee in ‘82. He said he hadn’t and gave me a dismissive stare. I guess professional baseball is far more important to fans and wannabee players than the actual people who can do it.

I also saw Mo Vaughn at a Waffle House in Arlington/Dallas. My nephew was playing in a “world series” there while the Angels were playing the Rangers. A couple of the other coaches got baseballs from the car and asked him to sign. He did, but told them to be cool so he wouldn’t be noticed. There were two others passed out in the back of his limo. One was, according to them, GA.

Who goofed? I've got to know.

Nolan Ryan and Bobby Grich

I used to live across the street from Ryan in Anaheim when he first came to the Angels in the early 70s. It was a cul-de-sac on North Adair Street. I was about, 7,8,9 somewhere in there. I played with his two boys which were about my age. Ryan even played wiffle ball with us once.

I also spent the night at his house…he was with the team on an away trip. His wife gave me a kiss on the cheek goodnight. I had a picture of Ryan that my older brothers talked me in to taking to him to get autographed. Even at that young age I wasn’t into autographs but I brought it anyway. Even though he knew me he didn’t address it to me…just signed Nolan Ryan. Cool, nonetheless.

We could always tell when Ryan came home after a ball game he lost. Our house was on the first corner before turning right towards the cul-de-sac and Ryan’s car would come screeching around the corner! LOL!

I met Bobby Grich this past September at the UCLA/Tennessee game. He was a really approachable and friendly guy to talk with. I got my wife to take a picture of me and him and we talked for a few minutes about Angels baseball, UCLA football and his scholarship offer to play QB for the Bruins.

After the game my wife and I are walking back towards Calhoun’s…the bar on the river we met Grich and where we parked…Grich is sitting on a bench talking on his cell phone. He sees me, says on the phone he’s gotta go then calls out, “Hey, Mike, what’d ya think of the game? The offense kinda sucked and has a long way to go, huh?”

I’m like, what? This guy remembers my name and got of his phone call to talk to me? We talked for just a couple minutes because I wasn’t sure how much of his time I could steal ’cause I woulda talked all day long with him. Anyway, he was very friendly.

Met a lot of players at bars, restaurants, hotels

Played against Bobby Crosby.
Played with and against Gerald Laird.
Punched Gerald Laird in the mouth.

Highlights of a lot of years getting autographs during the sucky years of Angels baseball:
Helping Wade Boggs off the floor of the double tree bathroom after he stumbled in around 3 am.
Calling Arod in his hotel room every morning of a 4 game series, until he met me for an autograph at a suit shop.
Almost running over Bernie Williams in the parking lot after a game.
Mike James leaving me tickets to just about every home game in 96 or 97.

Reggie Jackson, Ken Griffey Jr. are the kind of dicks Milton Bradley aspires to be.
Roger Clemens is a mountain of a man, and friendly … sample size very small.
Ricky Henderson always speaks in 3rd person, is quite funny, and is in fact the greatest of all time.

Coolest Angel not named Mike James? Chili Davis
Most likely to go home with your mom? Chuck Finley

Other than Bo Jackson, I don’t have anything bad to say about any of the Angels players I have met.

Buy it.

One year for Little League day the Angels were hosting the M’s. Griffey was in CF and all of our pee wees were with us coaches in the RF bleachers, unis and gloves and all.

I may get the sequence out of order, but Griffey brain-farted two plays in that game. I think the first play was when he tried to cadillac a fly ball and dropped it, and we coaches got the Little Leaguers to jump all over him for not using two hands. They had a field day.

I think that it was the second screw up when a ball was hit over his head and he stood there and assumed that it was a home run. Instead it merely bounced off the wall and came back to him on a bounce and the batter ended up with a free pass to second base.

With the second screw up, the kids jumped all over him without provocation. Even they knew that those did not even qualify as Little League effort.

Griffey turned around right there in CF, in the middle of the game, and flipped off about 1500 kids.

I've talked to Griffey at least 20 different times

been a dick every time.

As for Laird, he looks that way because of his Dad. Not a handsome man.

Funny story about Laird, we were about to get on the bus for a tournament in LA, and he got into a little fight with another guy on the team. He ended up getting choked out … and then went on to pitch a rain shortened 5 inning no hitter.
He transferred to La Quinta the next year, and presumably didn’t have to worry about being shanked, choked, or punched anymore when he ran his mouth.

Torii Hunter

I met him just last week after the game. I was with my 10 year old cousin waiting behind the stadium where the players and coaches park, hoping to get an autograph for him. It was cold and I was about ready to leave, but he wanted to see if Torii would sign anything. Unfortunately, he just drove by and waved like the other players.

Then as we started walking to my car, his car started to turn around.

I told my cousin to go run up there see if maybe he’ll say hello or something. Turns out the other 2 dozen fans in the area had the same idea. There was quickly a very large crowd around his Benz and some of these fans were nuts!
Torii was obviously with his wife, but that didnt stop some crazy women screaming “Torii OMG you’re my baby! I LOVE YOU ILOVEYOU I LOOOOVEEEE YOU!!!! Can I please give you a kiss?” I honestly felt bad for the guy.

He was a class act though, signed some things for the fans, including my cousin, and shook my hand. It was after that 10-1 loss to the Twins Thursday and he didn’t play all too well, so I gave him a “Go get’em next time” He replied with a classic “That’s why we play everyday man!”
Needless to say, my cousin has a new favorite player (formerly Figgins) and will most likely stick with baseball instead of the motocross he’s been getting into. Thanks Torii

John Roseboro.

Bam! I just lost 99.999% of HH’ers right there.

For that .001% still with me, Juan Marichal must have been the stupidest baseball player in history to try and take on Roseboro, even if he WAS wielding a bat.

Part of the .001%. I remember that incident.

And I remember the photos in the paper after they had been separated. Marichal…still extremely agitated. Roseboro had blood all over the left side of his uniform (IIRC). Lots of pushing and shoving.

Does Marichal still own the highest leg kick ever in MLB?

by sothball on Apr 13, 2010 8:32 PM PDT up reply actions

My dad introduced me to Roseboro backwhen I was something about 11.

My dad knew him. I stood there and gaped and it seemed like my entire arm was going to get swallowed up in his huge hand when we shook hello.

After an uncomfortable few seconds of silence, I turned to my father and said “Dad, if this is your idea of inspiring me to stay dedicated to baseball, it aint working. I’m not ever gonna see myself rounding third and trying to knock this man down. If they are all like him in the pros, I’m doomed.”

(Little did I realize that by the time I turned 17 I would be 6’ 4" and 200 pounds myself.)

Yeas, they can be intimadating.

One of Roseboro’s predecessor – Roy Campanella – used to watch Dodger games from his wheelchair at Dodger Stadium, sometimes on the Club level, sometimes on the Loge level. He was very approachable. I shook his hand once (I was probably the same age as you when you met Roseboro) and had a similar reaction. Fortunately, he didn’t squeeze like some adults inadvertently do with kids.

Could you imagine the fallout if a player pulled a Marichal in this day and age?

I wasn’t even a twinkle in my parent’s eye when that occurred, but I’ve read about it numerous times.

If I had to pick a candidate stupid enough to do such a thing…I’m going with Carlos Zambrano. That guy is a powder keg of rage.

Good thing bats aren't used in basketball...

…or Ron Artest may have taken out a few fans in Detroit.

If a baseball player went “Marichal” today, I’d guess they’d get suspended for some % of a season (25%?), while also likely facing criminal charges.

Besides Zambrano, Prince Fielder has seemed a bit out of control at time. He may be another “Marichal” candidate.

by sothball on Apr 14, 2010 5:44 AM PDT up reply actions

Actually, I still promote the idea that batters need to use their bats as WMDs more frequently.

Had I made it that far (a wild-assed dream, let me assure everyone), I would have honed a reputation for losing my grip on my bat and lettign it fly in random directions. Not all the time, but once or twice a month.

Until, of course, I came up to the plate against some pitcher turned head hunter who had decided to take it out on me. He better hit me, because the next pitch would see me slip my grip, and the bat would randomly select the pitcher as it’s chosen direction.

That, I think, would go a long way in dealing with the Josh Becketts of the world.

New Year’s Day, 1983.

I flew from LA to New York for a work project. The stewardess told us during the flight the Lakers – that’s the "Showtime" Lakers – were on the flight in first class. I caught a glimpse of them disembarking, and then caught them as they were headed to baggage or out of the airport. The top 6 players (I think it was Kareem, Magic, Cooper, Wilkes, Worthy, and Scott) kept walking straight out of the airport. The others (I only remember Kupchak and Mike McGee) had to wait like the rest of us for their baggage. As a group, they were somewhat intimidating…they walked briskly, and were definitely not interested in stopping to give autographs or engage in idle conversation.

I have met others "celebrities" at various times through one means or the other… John Wooden (attended his basketball school as a youth…the most decent guy I have ever met and one hell of a man), Danny Kaye (a real jerk), Orlando Woolridge (nice guy and phenomenal athlete), Peter Falk during ("Columbo" days…seemed decent enough), Tim Salmon (my son attended his baseball camp in ’95), Rex Hudler (ST last year…wrote about it here on HH), Fred Sands (he of real estate fame…strange guy), John Kilroy (well known developer and World Cup challenger about 20+ years ago), and Kobe Bryant (about 3 months after he signed with the Lakers). I even met Billy Barty…I was on his TV show!

being around golf has allowed me to meet players...

I’ve met Grich, he loves playing golf. He can absolutely kill the ball. The one time I met the most players in one place was really cool for the most part. I used to work at a course in O.C. in the late 80’s early 90’s and DeCinces hosted a big charity outing there. They wanted all the groups to take caddies, so as I worked there the club asked me to caddy. I jumped at the chance knowing there would be Angels players there. I told my boss I wanted to caddy for Joyner and he set it up. I was ecstatic. I was around 19 at the time and I remember having Eddie Murray in front of us (he almost killed himself hitting a ball that ricocheted back at him and he had to hit the deck). I also saw Finley, Blyleven, Grich, DeCinces, Burleson, Boone, others I can’t remember but a lot of, at the time, current or past Angels. Back to caddying, Joyner couldn’t have been a nicer guy. He didn’t swear, drink or smoke (obviously being mormon). The round was excruciatingly long, it took 7 hours to play, and it was a very hot day. Now let me backtrack a little by saying Wally had won his arbitration earlier that winter for, at the time, I believe was a record amount. After the round he hands me some money, didn’t look at it but as we were walking out to the car, Burleson says to me “Hey caddy, what did Wally give you? He’s a cheap bastard!!” Sure enough I looked a little later and he game me $25. My other friends are telling me they made 250, 300. Thanks Wally, never had the same respect for him after that.

I wouldn't say I've ever met anyone...

from MLB, but I’ve run across quite a few and interacted with a handful. Highlight was definitely Ken Griffey Jr. He was doing a card show with his father after his rookie season. I was a sophomore in high school and had a busted up wrist. At the time, I was of below average height, but when I got up to him to get a picture signed, he engaged me in conversation, asking if I’d injured it slam dunking a basketball. I was already a fan of his…. the Angels had nobody of note at the time and Griffey had played locally. I was still somewhat impressionable.

Some of the best run-ins I’ve had around the stadium, or at spring training, have been with…. Arte Moreno (including one night at Throwbacks), Tim Salmon, Jim Edmonds, Troy Percival, Jarrod Washburn, Jeff DaVanon. Ran into Hideki Matsui a couple times at Spring Training… he was staying at the same hotel.

Rex Hudler also stands out. His first year as a broadcaster, and I think his first weekend as one…. in Tempe…. he was walking across the parking lot with Salmon, Edmonds, Anderson. I think. I’d gotten them all to sign my jersey before. I walked up to him and asked. He was trying to figure out why I was asking him. It was great. Then, in 2009 in Tempe, we caught his attention before the game by the front entrance. A beer vendor had wandered a few feet from his beer and Hud asked if it was ours. We’d already been drinking a few hours. I think he was a bit jealous.

A couple guys I had lackluster run-ins with were Rod Carew and….. drum roll….David Eckstein.

My mom grew up next door to tommy lasorda so we knew him a bit, tim wallach was another dodger we knew pretty well. Other than that, Troy percival had a nephew in my little league and his adopted brother was my history teacher in riverside so he was there on a regular basis. He was so cool, he’d sign autographs, hang out, give advice. A really cool guy. This was when he was just coming up and used to set up for lee smith.
We used to go to the stadium before games and try to get autographs. Chuck finley was the best, he’d sign anything you put in front of him and talk to you for a while. Luis Polonia and damion easley were assholes. I asked polonia to sign a ball that I had most of the angels signatures on and he told me to go F*ck myself. I was about 12. Easley would just ignore you like you werent there or make a smart ass comment about how he couldnt do it.
I met tim salmon a couple times, garrett anderson and jim edmonds. All of them seemed pretty cool. Most recently I met brandon wood. He was in the tunnel behind third base a couple hours before the game and I got to talk to him for a while. He was a really nice guy.
