Seems to me Reagins had a premonition that either Shields would not be in form when he returned (meaning Rodney would be an important set-up piece) or that Fuentes would not be an effective closer in 2010. That. or he was seeking a way to deny Fuentes the 55 GF he needed to cause his 2011 option to vest.
At the close of tonight's win, Rodney has five straight saves, has pitched with an impressive velocity, and an economy which has been essentially the opposite of the white-knuckle rides we've endured over the past several seasons with Frankie and Fuentes. Rodney has accepted this battlefield promotion and done very well. I don't see Jepsen as yet ready to close them out on his own.
Who here still feels that keeping Rodney was a waste of the slot on the 24-man roster?
