Umpire Greg Gibson is lousy.......
So I was watching the Twins/Royals game on MLB.TV with the new PS3 app and it was a great game. Back and forth in extra innings it went. The Twins scored 2 in the 11th to take a 9-7 lead. Rauch went back out to close out the game and get a W to go along with his BS and got the first 2 outs. Then next guy gets on, and then the Royals hit a grounder to Hardy which he bobbles and throws to 2nd which was WAY too late to get the runner but Gibson who had been in the rain for who knows how long decided that the game must end and called him out and promptly started to walk off the field. The call was so bad, the Twins were laughing into their gloves realizing they had gotten away with W.
I bring this up because it feels like I got cheated out of the hour and a half or so and I can only imagine how all those Royals fans feel. With a game that has calls that are such black and white, as opposed to say basketball, I have no idea why baseball feels they shouldn't have at least limited replays in something besides homeruns. Safe and out calls effect games to a much greater extent than homerun calls. Anyway, it just feels like there is a big problem, an easy solution, and a bunch of old geezers getting in the way like Bud Selig. Who's with me in wishing there was a system like the NFL where each manager could challenge a safe out call like twice a game. It would take less than a minute in today's technology driven world where the replay is on our tv virtually instantaneously. If baseball is so concerned with the pace of the game, then why don't they start calling balls everytime Posada goes and has a talk with his pitcher every other pitch......

Just saw it on the Twins website.
WOW! What a horrid call. Forget REPLAYS, the umpire should have been able to call the guy safe before the 2nd baseman ever caught the ball.
I also like how the caption
says that “Hardy recovered to throw him out”…… really……… really…… MLB you have to lie to us….. you can’t just say it like it is and say “Umpire blows easy call, Twins survive despite error”
thanks for the link
I know the Royals are still huge underdogs to win that game even if Gibson makes the EASY correct call, but it’s so frustrating to see a game end on a blown call, and it doesn’t have to be that way. I mean who doesn’t want the players to decide the outcomes of the games, other than Bud Selig and his cronies?
FanGraphs seems to show that the Royals had about a 10% chance to tie the game up [5% chance to win] before that play.
But they would have had a higher percent chance to win for the next batter who should have had runners at first and second with two out. And the Royals had already come back on that pitcher once in the previous inning.
Really bad form – Greg Gibson needs a reprimand. Or to be sent back to the minor leagues to learn how to be an umpire.
I definitely vote for Bud Selig to step down, way down.
It seems like only a matter of time, after Selig’s time, before the expanded use of replay in baseball games happens.

I agree...lose the umps entirely...
they appear lost far too often on their own…
I would like to see the “non” strikeout calls from Friday night’s game analyzed and sent to the league…umpiring just gets worse and worse annually!

That's worse than Eddings, IMHO.
And Eddings is just terrible. This should be cause for termination.
I love this team.

I've yet to see a call as terrible and pivotal as Eddings call against us in 2005...
Sure this was bad, but not as bad as what Eddings did to us…
pivotal is your key word there...
I love this team.

Wow that was bad.
The umpires suck so bad anymore. I’ve said it before but I really think something dirty and big will eventually blow up with the umpires someday. There is no parity. They totally take sides. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see it came from high up.
He just wanted to go home.
said eh close enough.
