• The contest always will include a designated hitter no matter where it's played.
• No starting pitcher who competes for his team on the previous Sunday will be allowed to pitch in the game.
• Rosters have been increased to 34 players, by one slot designated for a position player.
• A rule will allow one position player re-entry into the game if necessitated by injury.

I have no objections towards any of these. How about you guys?

Sunday

Even relievers who pitch Sunday can’t compete in All-Star game? That seems a bit much.

I thought it was a pitcher who started on Sunday.

The link is confusing.

The bullet list is as cmy912 posted, but the text of the article says Sunday starters.

Perhaps the most significant rule announced Wednesday affects those starting pitchers who are scheduled to start the Sunday before the All-Star Game, a situation that has caused much discussion the past several years.

Previously, those pitchers could be used in the game but generally would be available only for one inning, or even less, because they’re only two days removed from their start. Now, a starter whose final outing before the All-Star Game falls on that Sunday will be part of the All-Star team but ineligible to pitch, and replaced on the roster.

The rule about pitching on the Sunday prior is a good one....

I know many managers and GM’s have complained about their guys being overused and with good reason. The debacle of the recent “tie” left Selig with egg on his face and raised questions about pitchers having their arms burnt out.

Maybe an extra rule accounting for extra innings would help.

The only problem I’d have with all this is that the game itself plays a significant role in determining the eventual World Series champion (via the home field factor), and ,this fact could cause some to argue that the standard rule book should be applied.

I see every manager screwing with their rotation

to get the ace of the staff to pitch on that Sunday.

I just noticed that.

Thanks.
I think it’s probably only for starting pitchers (I added it into the bullet point). Prohibition of relief appearances on the Sunday seems harsh and unnecessary. It was probably a typo in the article.

If it goes extra innings they should settle it with a homerun shootout

Or maybe play a 10th inning only, then go to the shootout if necessary. That way the managers don’t have to “save” anyone (like Figgy last year) and everyone can get in the game.

I am fan various years ago.
