Scott Kazmir to DL as Angels Announce Roster

The strained right hamstring of Scott Kazmir will mean that Matt Palmer is the 5ht starter for the Angels to open the 2010 campaign. The Angels announced their opening day roster immediately following the final game of Spring Training Saturday afternoon.

As expected, the club will carry a 3rd catcher, Bobby Wilson, to accompany Mike Napoli and Jeff Mathis.

Outfielder Terry Evans and Utility veteran Robb Quinlan will be in uniform in Anaheim on Monday night for Opening Day. Pinch runner Reggie Willits will also begin 2010 on the Disabled List with a strained right hamstring.

There were no radical departures from the Angels script after Kazmir's hammy strain, which seems to be closer to a mild tweak than to anything chronic. Fear of a cascade injury affecting the other already suspect part's of Kazmir's anatomy were likely as important in the decision to rest and rehab an ache now. The Angels system is known for taking minor tweaks seriously early in the season when it comes to its pitching staff.

ANGELS 2010 Opening Day 25-Man Roster:

Starting 5: Jered Weaver, Ervin Santana, Joe Saunders, Joel Piñeiro, Matt Palmer

Bullpen: Brian Fuentes, Fernando Rodney, Kevin Jepsen, Jason Bulger, Scot Shields, Brian Stokes

Catchers: Mike Napoli, Jeff Mathis, Bobby Wilson

Infielders: Kendry Morales, Howie Kendrick, Erick Aybar, Brandon Wood, Maicer Izturis, Robb Quinlan

Outfielders: Bobby Abreu, Torii Hunter, Juan Rivera, Hideki Matsui, Terry Evans

Disabled List: Scott Kazmir, Reggie Willits, Chris Pettit, Anthony Ortega

why carry 3 catchers and why Robb Quinlan?

it seems Q’s spot could be used for a younger player. I dont understand 3 catchers.

We all live Napoli ever after.

by imyhero on Apr 3, 2010 5:10 PM PDT reply actions

here is an example

Mathis catching all game, late in the game, DH Matsui gets a hit, he is the tying run. You pinch run for him. When it is time to DH again, you have Napoli bat in that spot and if something happens to Jeff … Wilson can catch without sacrificing the DH role.

by Rev Halofan on Apr 3, 2010 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Because they know Wilson will be claimed...

…and I can see either Mathis or Naps being traded near the deadline depending on the scenarios present.

And like Rev said, it mostly right now allows Mathis to start the game and bring in Naps for a bat if needed (again depending on the scenario) while still having a backup.

In a previous fanpost

someone mentioned Q’s service time being almost enough to give him a pension. Or something like that.

If Scioscia and the Angels are giving him a spot for that reason, I think it’s a classy move. Q has always been a class act and has played well at times. I’ve never seen the guy make an error at any position and he’s not completely worthless as a hitter.

I’d love to see Q get a huge, game-winning hit in the playoffs so he can go down in Angels lore, a la Spiezio.

Quinlan over Ryan makes no sense. Even Cory Aldridge would be the better move.

Ryan and Aldridge are left-handed bats off the bench with greater power. Ryan plays all the positions Q does, with marginally better defense.

Kazmir to DL, and Sean Rodriguez to Tampa Bay's 25-man.

Q and Palmer on our 25-man.

Meanwhile S-Rod played largely LF and RF this spring, hitting .459 with 6 HRs and 17 RBIs, with 20 runs and a cool .500 OBP in 70 plate appearances.

Reality bites — for the moment.

by Turks Teeth on Apr 3, 2010 5:56 PM PDT reply actions

This is the 15-day DL

This is temporary. But you can count me in the “I would rather have Brandon Wood be the player to be named later than Sean Rodriguez that the Tampa Bay Rays selected camp.” I am encouraged that Brandon Wood walked eight (8) times for the Angels in spring training this year. I am playing a Missouri “Show Me” game with Wood. Minor league records are the science fiction of baseball. I suspect Chone Figgins took the 2010 A.L. West first place flag with him to Seattle.

by Yetijuice on Apr 3, 2010 6:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Sean Rodriguez was the main piece in that trade for Kazmir.

The PTBNL were Matt Sweeney and Alex Torres. But I see what you are saying, that you would rather have traded Wood than Rodriguez at the time, as was my opinion, but I have since changed my mind about that.

The Angels knew they were not going to pay Figgins his FA salary in the off season and had nobody as close as Wood to play third base where they still have quite a bit of depth at SS/ 2B.

And if they knew that they weren't going to retain Figgins...

…it makes even more sense to retain Sean Rodriguez.

The overwhelming justification for trading S-Rod among the faithful was that he was blocked by our overwhelming depth in the middle infield. But that’s a bad take on S-Rod. He plays six positions, and was the obvious replacement to Figgins — not as a 3Bman but as a superute — with a different skill set, and serious power potential.

That’s why I point out that Tampa Bay was playing him a ton in the outfield. They knew what to do with S-Rod.

Q's pinochle game is mean!

Being part of Scioscia’s pinochle foursome keeps Quinlan in the major leagues! When Robb gets a hit he is the Mighty Quinn. When he strikes out he is Quinn the Eskimo.

My attending the April 1st, 2010 San Diego Padres @ Los Angeles Angels game completes six full months (April/May/June/July/August/September) on my 1962-2010 combined calendar that I have seen at least one game per calendar date. My combined calendar has me at a mlb game every date from March 28th to October 17th. All of the spring training games I have been to have been in Anaheim Stadium or Dodger Stadium. My road trips to Arizona (2007, 2008, 2009) were for April and May regular season games.

“Spring training records are THE TRUTH!” Everybody starts the season 0-0. Equality is at the beginning of the season. Economics, stadium, weather, and personnel all contribution to the inequality at the end of the season where there likely will be a 100 game winning team and a 100 game losing team. Truthfully now, how many of us want to see all of the teams within a couple of games of 81-81 in the final standings?

And it's a hammy, not arm trouble...

…but it might get pretty bittersweet to read the box scores every day this season on a few counts.

I don’t want to root against Sean, Chone, Lackey (ok yes I do), etc. but secretly I don’t want them to do well. You want to feel that all the offseason moves (and Kaz from the later part of last year) look brilliant.

There's a lot wrong with Q being on this team

We just gave a roster spot to a guy who’s old (34), on the decline as a hitter (striking out 26.1% of the time last year to go with that ridiculous .275 OBP & has steadily decreasing OPS for four years in a row now) and not much of a runner (14 lifetime SB).

But just look at his versatility as a backup fielder – Q can play four positions and he’s only below-average at three of them! UZR scores for his career have him being slightly below-average at 1B (-1.0), lousy at 3B (-7.9), mediocre in LF (-0.3), and slightly below-average in RF (-1.0).

There are better options out there than a guy, who fighting for his last chance to land a roster spot on the only team in the world that would give him a chance and yet still put up abysmal Spring stats of .176/.236/.255

The Halos are holding on to Robb Quinlan so that he can duplicate Mickey Hatcher’s 1988 power numbers: one (1) home run regular season and two (2) home runs in the World Series. First at bat in Game 1 of that World Series Hatcher homered off of Dave Stewart and he thought “maybe if I circle the bases real fast they won’t know who hit that.” I am not greedy. I will take one Quinlan home run in the World Series as an Angel. Heck, I will be easier than that. I will settle for one Q Halo World Series rbi. If it is a game winning World Series hit it is the gold standard. If it is a walk-off World Series hit it is the platinum standard. All this talk about Q is simply overreacting.

There is absolutely no way Q has made the major league roster. Impossible that he would have made the squad in lieu of any other young talent, having a good spring and with nothing but upside.

It is just not happening. An April Fool’s joke. I know this for fact. LAASurfin promised me. He promised us all. It was just a simple, innocent minor league contract.

I think the Chris Pettit and Reggie Willits injuries have left Soth at the mercy of the Q. So, in that light, you can look at LAASurfin’s post as 100% correct: “it is only a minor league contract, unless there are injuries.” There are injuries to two of our highest ranking substitutes and here we are with Q on the 25-man roster.

Maybe the skipper just ain’t sold yet on Ryan nor Aldridge. If Q falters, I hope Scioscia would bring up one of those two spring training studs.

Well shit and dump me in it

Ready for my public flogging, Sir.

I rarely drop the F-bomb in these environs but WHAT THE FUCKING, FUCK? Why is Q on this team AGAIN?

Downing Rules’ (appreciated) attempts to mitigate/mediate aside, I’m all red-faced with embarassment. While I understood the Q minor league signing as an insurance policy, better options ABSOLUTELY emerged through ST.

I’m fine with Bourjos and Sandoval being issued AAA bus tickets – it is arguably the right place for them to be. But, in my view (which has clearly turned out to be worth, well…shit!), Ryan EARNED the roster spot. I was highly skeptical of him as a 32-year old ‘phenom’ and said so in several posts. But as ST progressed it became harder and harder to deny Ryan’s game – and Q’s lack thereof.

I’m officially acknowledging an identified blind-spot in my fandom. I’ve grossly underestimated the in-dugout man-love hierarchy.

Q making the roster makes me want to throw my computer to the ground

and punch holes in the wall. WTF did he do this spring, WTF has he done the past 3 years except OPS around 630 his last 500 some PA’s. I could maybe see it if Q was a great defensive player but his range on defense is the area he can fall down in, and he’s one of the slowest guys on the team so you sure as heck are never going to pinch run him. Also I could maybe see it if he was even a situational hitter but as mentioned the guy strikes out a TON and is only getting worse in that category.
