Carew in Angels Gear: Cool or Lame?
Rod Carew, the #17 Greatest Angel according to HH, was in the booth on Opening Night to chat about how MLB is using him to promote the All-Star Game in Anaheim this year. He was wearing an Angels jacket, even though they were playing against his beloved Twins, whose cap he wears in the Hall of Fame.
With his Panther-worthy swing he won my heart as a youngster, so he'll always hold a special place in my heart as an Angel (to the extent that I tipped the scales of voting in the first Top 100 Angels poll). But now that he has a frigging statue up now at the new stadium in Minneapolis, his legacy is tied even more to the Twins than ever before.
So I ask: Is it disingenuous for him to wear the Angels gear tonight? Is this pandering to SoCal Angels fans? Our first "Cool or Lame?" question of the year wants your opinion.

Meh...
many years of service to the team including some as the batting coach. Heck, his daughter’s life is honored with a statue near the front of the stadium. Rod rules.
I love this team.
I agree
Wholeheartedly. A man doesn’t have to be defined by one thing in life alone. Rod played for two teams during his major league career, yes he won most of his awards and was statisically better in his early years than his time in Anaheim. Without Rod though I daresay the Halos wouldn’t have made it to the 1979 playoffs, and we wouldn’t have been able to attract Reggie Jackson a few years later.
I know Carew doesn’t get much positive press due to his gruff demeanor during and beyond his playing years, but he was a hell of a player and will always be a Halo to me.

Much ado about nothing.
Now if John Lackey shows up twenty years from now in an Angels Jacket promoting something that would be a different story.

if he's in the HOF (purely hypothetical, of course) with a Red Sox hat, does that matter?
I’m just sayin’. Carew’s always an Angel to me, but it’s funny how marketing goes….
No it would'nt matter to me if Lackey is in the HOF with a Red Sox hat.
Due to the nature of the business changing where players will play with more teams during their careers than players of the past, as fewer and fewer long term contracts are negotiated, I think it will become less and less an issue with fans and less of a loyalty thing with the players that are inducted in to the HOF.

Except there's no way Lackey goes with anything but an Angels cap
if he goes at all, of course.

Yeah, I cant see him having more than a couple more good seasons
And even then, he’s certainly not hall worthy.

obviously he's not going to the HOF
However, if by some miracle he rattled off 5 Cy Youngs in a row, leading the Red Sux to 5 straight WS victories, breaking all kinds of pitching records along the way, you can bet he will wear the “B” instead of the “A” to the Hall.
And if Jose Guillen rattles off 18 straight silver sluggers with 18 different teams
en route to 18 world series titles with 18 different teams, you can bet he won’t go with an “A.”
In fact, he might be the first guy to go with no team affiliation.

The HOF cap wasn't his call....
… so I wouldn’t hold that against him. He gave it all he had while he was an Angel. I see no problem.

yes it was
that was the player’s privilege until Dave Winfield tried to go in as a Yankee instead of a Padre.
I thought it was Wade Boggs that changed the rules?

Boggs was affected
He had signed a contract with the then Devil Rays that said if/when he went to the HOF it would be in a Tampa Bay Hat. Boggs was in the pipeline when Winfield was elected and they decided to implement a change that they were going to make for Wade anyway. Next year Gary Carter whines about getting a Montreal cap because he can make more memorabilia money if he were to be enshrined with a Mets cap.
Shows what a ring will do for you
Carter was with Montreal far longer, and he easily had his better years there, but ‘86 has him pegged just as much in most people’s memories as a Met, even if he was an Expo first and foremost.

Well, my mistake then....
….but that would still be a tough call for Carew. He’s damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t. Either way, he surely didn’t cheat either team while he was on the field.

c'mon though
does anybody think that he showed up in the Twin’s booth with that jacket? He was just being polite.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
He was an Angel. He can wear Angels gear anytime and anywhere he wants...
Nothing wrong with that. Hell he can wear it more-so than any of us fans I’d say. How is that disingenuous? That’s just us fans putting that crap on him. I’m sure he’s just as proud and happy to be an ex-Angel as an ex-Twin. I’m sure most players look fondly upon their former teams unless they are Milton Bradley or Jose Guillen.

Doesn't Carew work for the Angels?
Didn’t he get hired to some sort of advisory role at some point in the last year? If so, I think he’s probably required to wear Angels stuff.
Cut the guy a break.
Carew has always been a gracious guy. He has significant history with two franchises. For us to ignore that is just myopic.
To read some kind of cynical calculation on the part of Carew in wearing an Angel jacket at Anaheim on opening day, is just ridiculous.
I don't think anyone's ignoring what he means to two franchises
The question is: what do we think the franchises mean to HIM?
I think that's like asking a parent which of his children he loves more
I am sure that both the Twins and Angels organizations mean a lot to him. To ask him, which means more is somewhat unfair. You can certainly ask it, but I don’t think you will have an answer that will please you.
The Twins are the organization where he came up with, where people coached him as a young kid. Think of it as his first love. Then the Angels are the organization that adopted him and his family and where he was embraced. You

Wow
How would you expect hm to answer? The Twins gave him his start, took a chance on him, helped make him what he was. That always means something to a player. The Angels recognized his talent, gave him the big money for the time, the fans adored him, and both franchises were there for him during his family problems. He appreciates both equally, I would imagine.

Carew is probably one of the best examples in baseball
of a pure two-team player. It’s not like he’s Troy Percival being a lapdog for Detroit or Chuck Finley for the Cardinals or something.

So lame
and I’m going to go tell Carew to take that damn jacket off, or I will take it off for him!
I'm wearing a "Markas" patch on my sleeve this season.
So the REAL question would be...
At what point did Carew put on that jacket? Was he wearing it when he climbed out of his car? Or…did some production monkey hand it to him when he arrived at the backdoor of the broadcast booth as they checked his makeup?
The answer to that question drives the response. I suspect that he got that jacket handed to him.

Maybe he solves this problem by wearing briefs
