Minor League Opening Day Thread
Lineups for the Cedar Rapids, Arkansas and Salt Lake openers...
A-Ball Kernels:
Mike Trout, CF
Matt Long, LF
Jean Segura, 2B
Luis Jimenez, 3B
Randal Grichuk, RF
Eric Oliver, DH
Casey Haether, 1B
Adam Younger, SS
Starter: Garrett Richards
You can follow the action here on MILB Gameday or here via internet radio.
Richards has coasted through three so far with 4 K's. He may have missed his spots in one big league spring training outing, but that 93 MPH fastball and three solid offspeed pitches should play very well in the Midwest League. He's primed for a big year.
Trout and Ramirez both went down on strikes in their first AB's, but Grichuk recorded the Kernel's first hit of the year with a hard grounder through the legs of the Beloit shortstop... it is A-Ball.
***UPDATE*** Richards has recorded 6 groundouts and 7 K's, yielding only 2 hits through 5 innings.
You can follow the AA Travs here. Lineup is as follows:
Andrew Romine, SS
Ryan Mount, 2B
Jeremy Moore, LF
Paul McAnulty, DH
Julio Perez, RF
Efren Navarro, 1B
Jay Brossman, 3B
Clay Fuller, CF
Tim Kiely, Pitcher
Mount lined a single to right for the Travs' first knock, and Kiely recorded three straight ground outs in his half of the inning.
***UPDATE*** Mount tripled in the first run of the game, but Kiely got torched for 4 runs the following inning.
The Bees lineup:
Peter Bourjos, CF
Freddy Sandoval, 3B
Hank Conger, DH
Corey Aldridge, RF
Mark Trumbo, 1B
Michael Ryan, LF
Gary Patchett, SS
Ryan Budde, C
Hainley Statia, 2B
Starting Pitcher: Trevor Reckling
You can follow the gameday action here.
And the Quakes' lineup...
Reggie Willits, CF
Alexia Amarista, 2B
Roberto Lopez, DH
Gabe Jacobo, 1B
Dillon Baird, 3B
Angel Castillo, RF
Beau Brooks, C
Darwin Perez, SS
Tyson Auer, LF
Starting Pitcher: Tyler Chatwood

interesting seeing Trout leadoff

leading off
interesting it’s Trout
(ok, I think we got it covered now)
wtf?

Well, it is interesting...
His tools are still those of a leadoff guy. Who knows if the power he flashed in a small ST sample size was an accurate reflection of what he’s currently capable of.
Segura in the three hole is also… interesting. He must have had a great spring in minor league camp.
One name we all need to be aware of is Luis Jiminez
One of most “toolsy” hitters in our system that no one knows about. He’s a hacker for sure, but in terms of hitting any pitch and hitting it hard, there’s none better.
Exactly....
He’s not as gifted as Vladdy was (once in a generation type of PLAYER, like Clemente), but Jiminez is similar in that he swings at everything and can destroy just about everything. He’s young too, already missed one year of pro ball and he’s still only 19 I believe, which is right on track. He’s the type of 3B fans love, the prototypical kind. I hope he learns some patience. I’m willing to bet either Jiminez, Grichuk or Ramirez lead the league in HR this season.
You're fun.
Lucho is 22. He’s coming back from a labrum tear. It’s his second occurrence of a significant shoulder injury.
rghan was correct in early ‘09 when comparing Jimenez optimistically to Jeff Francouer. He hasn’t a clue about the strikezone.
Vlad Guerrero he is not. At age 22, Vlad was hitting .302 with the Expos, not going 0 for 4 rehabbing in A ball.
Under estimated on the age
And I didn’t say Lucho was Vladdy, I said he had a Vladdy strike zone, which means we swings at everything between the foul lines. He’s got skill, he’s just sloppy.
Prediction: Grichuk goes deep 1st

Richards is looking better and better
Appears he’s continuing his Orem dominance at Cedar
Well that sucked
Woke up and literally ran to check the box scores. System wide sweep.
Blah.
At least the top starters held the line: Combined, Reckling, Chatwood and Richards put up 16 scoreless innings and 13 punch outs, while inducing 22 groundballs to just 8 flyouts. Most promising of all, at least for the near term, Reckling needed just 80 pitches to get through his 6 innings.
hitting was BLAH
put it this way… the Angels hit better in Anaheim than their minor leaguers did on THURSDAY night throughout the system
Blah seems to be the theme throughout Halodom at the moment
Though we on HH are anything but
